Hands-on Vive N Chill - Here´s my Full Review and Step-by-Step Installation of the smartest cooling solution available for the HTC Vive Virtual Reality headset! ViveNChill is an upcoming VR accessory which helps you get rid of the common sweating issue while playing intense games in Virtual Reality.
"Vive N Chill" is an Indiegogo backed project and soon-to-be released product made for HTC Vive headsets, consisting of two USB-powered fans blowing air on your forehead, and preventing sweat while doing intense gameplay in VR. A rather simple but still brilliant solution if you ask me - and I´m about to give it a first-look, full review and stress test. I´m also going through the installation process step-by-step, how you attach the Vive N Chill to your HTC Vive.

It looks like they could add an import vent in the bottom front with the fans inside the front top exit vent. Even if it doesn't move a lot of air it would still be very helpful.
@TheMadPatter

Been working on prototypes for solving the hot face issue, one that will cycle some air inside the mask and also on the forehead. When I get my ViveNChill I'll probably see if an attachment can use one fan dedicated to the inside of the mask. With my current design, around my eyes ends up cooler than the rest of my face after intense gaming lol. A built in fan system for regulating air I'd image could be a stock thing in later HMDs.

I agree it would be better with half speed and half noise. The vibration travels through the deluxe audio headphones, making it louder than you probably experience with softer headphones. I may try sticking foam between the Vive and fan to reduce vibration noise to an acceptable level. Always enjoy your reviews, thanks SweViver!

Thanx for the discovery Swe, some users are having problems with grey screen of death which may be related with both heat and some sw update. I will try this to cool my headset and tell you about results.
@SweViver
@SweViver 7 лет назад
Oh that sounds terrible :( But I can imagine that many people breaks their Vives because of sweat and water damage. Im actually amazed that my headset is still alive after so many sweaty hours, soaked VR covers and dripping sweat right on the headset hehe. Hope you will find the product useful - it really helps me out so far. Totally 3 gameplay hours with ViveNChill and still no sweating on my head at least :) Cheers
@GetRevved
@GetRevved 7 лет назад
Surely if they add a fan speed adjustment, this will help with the noise issue. Win win! I'd love to know how they're are able to use the Vive name with the Vive logo without breaching HTC's trademark 🤔
@SweViver
@SweViver 7 лет назад
Yep, that would help a lot! :) Not sure actually, but I guess as long its a product made only for the HTC Vive, they probably don't mind ;)

Hey Sweviver how long did you let the vive n chill rest for the sticky substance to stay stuck? I'm having trouble with mine, they lack stickiness. When I saw you move the fans angle no problem I knew something was up with mine because I have to hold the base so that they don't pop off

Hey sweviver I just got mine and yes it works great definitely keeps a head and upper face cool in a little inside the unit I modified mine a little and use two sided Velcro because I don't trust the sticky material popping off and can just attach it with velcro again and also use a hyperkin gel cell cover had to put it below it still works great thanks for your cool videos

Very cool! Thanks for the test! The only (but big) problem for me: It will block the USB port that I use for my external microphone... perhaps I can use an USB splitter?!
@SweViver
@SweViver 7 лет назад
Cheers mate :) Its a very nice product - simple but so effective! Yeah I understand... maybe you could split the USB by some kind of USB Y-cable? The fans only use some voltage and not any data, so the USB microphone would use the full data-speed anyway. Btw, what USB microphone do you use?
@VoodooDE_VR
@VoodooDE_VR 7 лет назад
Yeah I could try a Y-Cable, should work... Even more weight on my head xD I use the SmartLav microphone, but its not USB, you need some adapters to use and convert it.
@SweViver
@SweViver 7 лет назад
+VoodooDE Yeah hehe and even more weight once we get TPCAST wireless modules ;) Been thinking about switching to Smartlav, but I dont want to record externally, would like to keep the audio recorded in realtime with OBS over usb. What adapter do you use?
@VoodooDE_VR
@VoodooDE_VR 7 лет назад
Hmm, I'm not sure if I will use TPCast... There are some reviews that the signale needs intervisibility at all times with the receiver, also you need an additionale router and you have no microphone anymore... Perhaps the will fix these things for EU/US-Version... I dont record externally, it works fine with OBS! I think it was this one: www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0167POJAI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Its an external soundcard, its recognized in OBS and so you can record it without problems.

I don't see how these get airflow INTO the headset where it's actually needed. they appear to just sit on top of it. how is this any different from just using a ceiling fan (which does almost nothing, since it also doesn't get any air inside the headset)

The problem is I am sweating mainly under the foam ring so the fan will not reach the important spaces on my head. Cooling the upper side of my forehead is okay but it's not the perfect solution i believe.
@SweViver
@SweViver 7 лет назад
Im not sure about that actually. There is a lot of research made about this matter. If you cool down your forehead you can actually prevent sweating on your whole head, including eyes, cheek, neck etc. If you heat up your forehead the whole body will heat up, and so on... Well well, there might be better solutions out soon, but for now this really helps me very much :) Been playing totally 3 hours with Vive N Chill and still no sweating. Maybe not perfect. but quite impressive for such a simple solution :) Cheers mate!

I reccomend removing the nose rest: now i breath way better and there's a nice airflow on the face at times. You will get some light inside but it's not something you notice while playing and i found out it's useful to prevent VR alienation as you can peek out a little bit without using the camera.

There is going to be too many products fighting for the USB real-estate on the VIVE HMD. With foveated rendering on the way as well as I think the wireless gizmo uses a usb slot as well. I didn't even check, is there more than one at least?

Well, its not too loud but its not quiet either. Im explaining that in the video. When using headphones/headset the fan buzzing is not an issue at all. Without any headset it could be distracting of course. But who plays without a headset or headphones/earbuds anyway? ;)

The product works fine but I did end up using a glue-gun to further secure the fans. My daughter with long hair worries about getting her hair stuck in the fan, but these fans have limited torque and are not dangerous. If wanted, fan guards could be installed, no problem, but I wouldn't bother. I highly recommend.
@VR-CHECK
@VR-CHECK 7 лет назад
Nice. But it would be more usefull if the airflow goes inside the case not to the forehead only. Okay for You its the perfect solution :P Just kidding. But lets be honest. Even an inside solution would not fit because of fogged lenses. Right?
@SweViver
@SweViver 7 лет назад
Well, sure mate :) but Im still not sure about that. There is a lot of research made about this issue and phenomena. If you cool down your forehead you can actually prevent sweating on your whole head, including eyes, cheek, neck etc. Inside cooling would probably never work and it would just make your eyes too dry :) Also, it may sound strange but I have never had any fog on my lenses. Im not sure, maybe its just me not sweating "inside" the headset, but mainly "around" on the outside, especially on my forehead and neck. Well well, there might be better solutions out soon, but for now this really helps me very much :) Been playing totally 3 hours with Vive N Chill and still no sweating. Quite impressive for such a simple solution :) Cheers mate!
@SweViver
@SweViver 7 лет назад
There are some studies saying that the whole body is reacting to your upper part of your head. If you freeze your forehead, your whole body will freeze, so I guess it should work the same way for cooling down :) Well I dunno, i'm not a scientist haha! Cheers
@justinspirational
@justinspirational 7 лет назад
HANKs VR no.. Airflow where your eyes are will mainly give you dry, itchy eyes.. Not healthy long term
@Hacker4748
@Hacker4748 7 лет назад
The ViveNchill makers write: "We iterated over many design choices when creating the ViveNchill. Our initial prototypes focused on piping air into the headset. Users complained about dry eyes, high noise levels, vibration, interference with the built in mic, and low cooling effect. So we took things outside and directed airflow at the forehead and contact area with the facial foam. We found a drastic improvement in its ability to cool you off with no negative side effects. As an added benefit, reducing heat and moisture also reduced fogging and nausea."

@sherkhansher1981
@sherkhansher1981 7 лет назад
I can see this be a problem with a mic interference when playing multiplayer online and chatting with others, depending how noisy it is. Also, don't think it's a good idea to add more things on top of already bulky HMD. Plus, there are plenty of usb powered fan solutions out there to just make your own, or buy a regular fan and have it blowing at your entire body (including your tenders) from few feet away. Not worth more than $10 in my opinion.
@SweViver
@SweViver 7 лет назад
Hmm not sure about any interference actually, but of course the fans are not fully silent, so if you have a sensitive microphone it could eventually be heard by your MP buddies. Well, I will try out MP soon and report about this :) Nah, to be honest the fans + the cables doesnt weight more than a few grams, so you really cant feel the difference in weight. Of course, its a simple solution so Im sure many people can do their own DIY solutions, but the ViveNChill looks nice and matches the Vive quite well, and Im too lazy (and have no time) to do something on my own, so I think its a perfect solution to the sweating issue :) The thing is that nothing comes cheap when it comes to VR right now. Its a new tech so the accessories will of course cost as well - especially when made in small production. But honestly, this product really helps me a lot. Ive been sweating like a maniac lately this summer, so I still think its worth every penny and will probably order an extra pair :) Cheers mate

This is what I have in my racing rig room (CV1) and also my VR room (Vive). Keeps everything cool, even your crotch! It was 110f (43c) here today and this AC unit will freeze you out of a room. Another advantage is when you're in room scale you can tell where you are by the air blowing on you. Have the air blowing in the center of your chaperon area and you'll always know when you're dead center. www.homedepot.com/p/LG-Electronics-10-000-BTU-Portable-Air-Conditioner-and-Dehumidifier-Function-with-Remote-in-White-LP1015WNR/205649878

I've got a big fan and the room is air conditioned, it still gets hot as hell in the mask during intense games. If this actually manages to get airflow into the face this could be a game changer for more active games.
