It’s nice to see a review related to something that I’m always trying to improve , carrying in all the gear can be pain anyway- I tend to bring everything just in case because you know the feeling when you have the right tool but you didn’t bring it ! They seem like a good product and your modifications will improve them. Thanks for the videos

This is really impressive. I am currently doing a similar thing but with the older DeWalt TSTAK boxes (purely because I already have about 20 of them and the van racking is made for them). I have been switching over to the drawer versions. If I am doing a smaller job at a client's home then I can take the tools from the drawers in the van and put them in a tool tote. If I am doing a bigger job or in the workshop then I just wheel the whole lot in. There is nothing worse than needing the tool at the bottom of the bottom tool box and let's face it, no matter which was you stack the boxes you always need something from the bottom. I hadn't thought about building a workbench on top until I watched this video and its such an amazing idea.

Great vid, I confess that I’ve invested too heavily in Systainers to make the change now. They do fit in my car well. For me the fact you have drawers and can access each tool you need is quite a plus point. Everyone is amazed that I can tell if I’m missing a tool so for me the whole system(s) whether Dewalt/Festool etc pay for themselves time and time again. The only advantage for me by keeping what I’ve got is at my age I can carry them. Very impressed and thanks for sharing. Regards Mike

Brilliant video, Oliver. So nice to see a tidy work place. I like to keep my workshop, although modest, in good order. However, I know I have have ‘misplaced’ a box of screws recently as there is a gap in my box. A few years ago I took half my kit, including a DeWalt flip saw, to France to lay my son’s laminate flooring and left my drill and driver behind. I now have two sets! Thank you so much for sharing 🌞

I went from a wall of cabinets with doors to a wall of open cases for systainers on rails and shelves, now everything has a home and is easily accessible (even bought systainers for non festool as well as systainers with bins for storage). Previously every tool was on a shelf or the makers box on s shelf. If I was installing I’d go with a van and rack storage. Long ago I had made my own cart for doing installations, it was a lot to haul around and half the stuff was most likely not needed. It really comes down to your work requirements and flow. Now I just need to sell off a stack of Dewalt parts boxes that I was using before. LOL

You’ve done a thorough job on this. I’ve struggled with the festool systainers. They do lock, if you turn the green lock 90deg upwards, allowing the stack above to hinge back, however it can be cumbersome. I’ve managed to break a couple. I’d been thinking about the dewalt, they look way more robust.

I have a similar layout in my workshop, a large bench on wheels that I can just move about about close to where I'm working. All thing things that are likely to injure me when I go in the draw live in one draw and I'm careful hen I go in there :-). That MFT top attaching to the boxes is a great idea. I would make the plate that held the clips and then attach the plate to a sacrificial top. The top could be stuck down with double sided carpet tape.

I love this system I thought the systainer system was way to go but always like you say no matter what order you stack them in you always want what's in the bottom one . Money is tight at the moment but hopefully end of the year will have time and money to have a few days just to do exactly what you have done
@timmietimmins3780
@timmietimmins3780 Год назад
You can very easily open a systainer while other systainers are stacked on top of it. I do this routinely at work, with about waist high stacks. It's a major selling point of the system. I just try to put very large tools on the top of stacks, as it can be hard to open the boxes fully while stacked, but for little stuff, like say, my jigsaw and oscillating multi tool, you can easily get them in and out from halfway down or at the bottom of a stack. Getting a lid open to say, 45 degrees, is very realistic. Just support the stack as you tilt it back, grab the tool, or put the tool away, and close up again.
@BradshawJoinery

Cheers David! I would get yourself to a tool show and hopefully get hands on with both the packout system and the Dewalt. I made my chouce this way for a few reasons, but the packout is a better made box. All the best, O.

I've been using the erbauer boxes, which are based on the Magnusson system for the last year. However, they have recently become harder to get hold of, and I recognise the stacked toolbox problem, especially when they are in the van. Your video inspired me to order 4 of the drawers for £500. I then saw Screwfix have an £80 off deal on the rolling boxes, so I ordered two of those sets costing another £320, and four handles at £15. That's a lot of money for my little handyman business... Let's hope they work well! I think I'll use two rolling bases with larger tools in, like a tracksaw, and a pair of drawer units on top of each. I will then make a mft top to go on top of both, but space them apart a bit to make a 60x120 work surface. With one of the drawers having the dogs etc in foam, I think that will be great on-site. Thanks for the video!

I just to want to point out that Sortimo has a whole system built around this concept called WorkMo. It has smaller modules available that can be carried/stacked as well as wheels and MFT top, side attachements. They’ve been around longer than DeWalt’s system so maybe worth a check for some. There is also the option of getting slides, drawers, or the Mobile Workshop from Tanos/Festool, but Sortimo offers standalone drawers which might be what some are looking for.

The combination of mobile workstations, carts, and sortainers is essential for efficient transport and site work with systainers. Two Festool mobile workstations side by side with 3-4 drawers each. 4 sys carts with 2-3 systainers each can fit under the table extensions. This gives you access to up to 12 systainers in drawers or on top of stacks. The second and third systainer down can easily be accessed without unstacking by design. The sortainers go in the bottom which have drawers. That's about 20 systainers that can be accessed without unstacking. Everything is on wheels and extra systainers stack on the tops of the small MFT tops for easy transport. Hope this helps.

When I started in 1975, things were so much simpler, we didn't have all of the cordless tools to worry about that take up way too much space with the chargers and accessories. Would I get rid of them, nope. I bought a bunch of the Milwaukee Pack-outs a few years back thinking that would work. They didn't, just like your Sustainers', you have to unstack them to get to something. You can wheel them into a job, but when you unstack everything, you can't move around the room. Then Milwaukee came out with the Pack-outs with drawers. Maybe I should just retire again.

Couldnt you make a connecting piece between the two sets of drawers where you were planning on fitting the plastic. 26:49 If you make up something like a bow tie insert that goes from one box to the box behind it, which clips in, you wouldn't get them leaning when you pull the drawer out. Hope that makes sense and works..

Excellent video thanks 👏. I had to chuckle to myself though as I have literally only just done the exact same thing. I was getting so fed up with the amount of systainers I had to take on-site and the space they took up even though I had several 3 drawer ones. And as you say the handles do come off especially if you try and put several tools in one to save space. I started with two ordinary dewalt boxes and was going to buy the drawers but I didn’t like the rocking or the latching as I think they will eventually break with that amount of rocking. I didn’t think about making feet that’s a good idea, instead I actually switched to the Milwaukee Packout before I bought any more dewalt because they have a very sturdy connection and really good dolly. The only downside is the drawers aren’t IP rated lie the dewalt and are possibly a bit narrower. All I need now is to find a buyer for about 30 systainers 😳😂. Love you’re videos I think they’re the best on RU-vid thank you.

Hi Ian, thanks for that, Intersting to hear how many people have tried or moved tot he drawers, its a great system, and one which you see any other professional using in their workspace. You dont see a dentist moving boxes around to get the tooth puller out do you, It just makes sense! I looked at in person for a considerable time the packout drawers but a few featurs on the dewalt sold it to me, and i think i can get over all the downsides. No doubt speak again! cheers

@@BradshawJoinery Good analogy about the drawer system and I find the clients are impressed by it too. I’ve used the systainer drawers for years but the size was very limiting especially with foam. I dismissed the packout at first because I liked the wider drawers in the dewalt and the fact they’re still IP rated. It was only the wobble that put me off, I didn’t think about making feet to solve that so went back to the packout idea instead before I spent too much 😁. Its a shame nobody does a deeper drawer for things like the TS55 that would really set them apart. I noticed someone had cut the bottom out of the top drawer and joined two together , think I might give that a go. Good to see top class work still goes on by the way and you set the bar nice and high 👏🏻.

I skipped the foam and tend to stay away from overloading cause I change it around for finish carpentry jobs! It stays in my truck facing the door (2 of them 6 big drawers) and I also use Makita Sustainers. They seem to hold my big stuff, track saws; guns, and other tool like batteries. Those are nice seem almost like they copied the Red Tool? However mine do not hv the tilting problem u showed! Good foam I may try it! Thk u mate for the time & Video always! Great informative video. This a problem ive been battling with for a long while! Even considered the snap on draw boxes for site use but they get too heavy, draws not deep enough etc....there simply isnt an ideal solution. Like you ive considered making my own but that becomes too heavy in its self... oh hum! I like the idea of having the tool storage as a work bench out and about this using up dead space and stops you from carrying the pop up saw horses and wooden rails system. However i do have a concern about putting the portable sire saw on top which is not fixed down. Worked with a guy couple of weeks ago who had a site saw not bolted to the stand, no riving knife (we are all guilty of this next bit) had to rip some 4x2 didnt put the knife in.....saw binds trys to kick back hes kind of bracing it, saw flips over falls on floor then proceeds to dance towards him. Somehow it didnt take his toes or foot off but it did get his fingers somshow. End result now he only has 2 fingers and a thumb on one hand. Moral of the long tale make sure that site saw is firmly fixed down somehow. Hope it works out long term it would be interesting to hear the longer term field views as its a difficult problem to overcome for transportation and workabilty. Thank you for taking the time to make the videos

Good video and a reviewer who actually uses his tools - must admit when I saw the title, I thought you must be crazy however - gotta agree with you. i've invested in the systainers as I do believe they're the most practical for my use (lightweight and quite robust). Problem is as with all these storage systems is the lid access. Festool pull out system is prohibitively expensive and to fit systainers in a van to take advantage of the height - costly. I've purchased a number of the XXl systainers and they work well and I don't carry multiple toolboxes - removed tools from boxes (using these for static storage) , 3d printed custom casings - boxes etc. , combined and stashed tools in the xxl systainers and has worked well.to date. Still believe that a stackable drawer system is 1st prize. Just watching your review video - pity de walt don't make drawer for track saws etc. Great solution to the wobble problem btw. I don't believe there is such as a perfect tool storage system - constant labour of love / hate. Thanks for the video.

I think it’s almost an impossible quest to find perfection in storage. I went from systainer to packout, mainly to reduce the amount of boxes needed to get the same, or generally more tools from the van to the site. I used to have similar to you a tool/s plus it’s ancillaries in shadow foam in a systainer. But shadows foam gets tatty, wears, and takes ages to workout what/ where to cut. And is so wasteful on space. Tools go in packout, anvils in systainer drawers, hand tools in vetos. Probably could tweak it but them I find after a change I loose any gained time in access and organisation wasted looking for it where it used to be stored, not where I moved it too. I know packout make drawers, but I’m not buying more plastic drawers, just so I can not use perfectly adequate plastic drawers I already own. 🤩🤯🤭

Very neat but I couldn't begin to fit my tools in little boxes or drawers. I tow a large trailer packed with tools. Behind a Ute with a lot more gear. Big dropsaws. Several circular saws. And a multitude of other things that in a box would just take up too much room in the trailer. It only just fits in without boxes. With boxes I would be driving a Semi. That is just my daily carry. For certain jobs I have to take a lot of other gear that I store at home in various sheds. Gone are the days of a tradesman with a canvas bag on a pushbike or small motorbike like it was when I was a kid. Somehow they used to manage and the quality of their work was superb. Now we have all this kit and are hard pressed to replicate anything like what was made in the past.

The boxes in this video pretty much hold all id need as above, you could stack 5x that in a trailer easily, id say its more space saving than having them loose as tangled up tools arent efficient, Im actually amazed by the time i save now reaching for tools. The £1000 investment will be covered in no time.

Wey aye, if it wasn't for the lack of waterproofing (when opened, water just falls straight into the box) I'd have definitely gone with these. As is, I went with the tstak system by Stanley which is exactly the same with very small insignificant differentials except the DeWalt has one box which is stubborn, I can't remember what that was about but got it in a deal with a transparent case with little boxes. I have a few drawers and it also helps access things whenever; I do have two deep boxes which is annoying but fits my sds drill absolutely perfectly longways and a few other clunky tools like the router. I'm happy with my choice given their storage outside and the cheap convenience but fantastic quality they have but I can only fit a 400 or 450 hand saw, not a huge compromise but whatever. The real frustration is being unable to store clamps, I was thinking about modding the cart for them though

Pro Tip for Europeans, get the "Euroboxes" instead. They come in 1000 different versions with lids, with side panels, with wheels and all sort of stuff. They are all standarized in their sizes and they are cheap. You can get the ones with the side load windown, you can stack them, add wheels underneith and get access to any tool you want. You can also get them with lids even lockable if you wish. They cost 20€ per box. Standard sizes are 60x40cm then it´s like with DIN A4 DIN A3 etc. double the size for the bigger one and half it for the nexr smaller one. So 40x30cm, 30x20cm etc.

Only remove 1 tool to access another except coping saw possibly… looks nice amd neat BTW however I work in lofts in domestic houses… to do average day I would be worn out getting all that in a loft ….try making a job specific box lol..u will be spending £1,000s to do that..hence I have a few velocity bags for various jobs and suck up the …where did I put that as instil Tend to put everything in the same slot

I recently had $60,000 of my tools stolen from a roommate. He locked my fiancé & I out of the house we were staying in. Moved from N.Y to Houston so I’m trying to look on the bright side…. Besides him being an amputee, diabetic & escaped the swat team is beyond me. Iv been an automotive technician for 22 years & im looking for something like this. Im looking at it like trimming the fat, Matco tool boxes cost $$$$$ including all the tools. Anyway wish me luck cause I’m starting from scratch. This system seems to look good & im simply gonna militarize my load out. Stay blessed 🇺🇸

Its a good system but id suggest getting hands on or ordering a couple before commiting. im happy with them, but there are negatives to them as mentioned.

Every time you opened a drawer I repeated the thought even louder in my head...omg I really hope there's a tracking device on that box. Lol. That's a crazy set up dude. What is the brand of that scriber?

Haha it's a nice setup to use that's for sure 👍🤣. The scriber is the Veritas log scribe but looks like they changed the name., amzn.to/3DzA20R
