I've previously uploaded an excellent - but lengthy - 1989 adaptation of this dark thriller by Wilkie Collins. That earlier version ran to most of six hours and starred Sophie Thompson and Eleanor Bron. It's very good. But, this more recent adaptation is also good, and hurtles through the story in a leisurely two hours. Some elements of the story are inevitably lost, but it's still a good story well-told - and in particular, Ron Cook is never a bad name to see on a cast list.
MYSTERIOUS MAGPIE is a channel devoted to ghost and horror stories on British radio, and to dark tales of every kind. I have another channel, MYSTICAL MAGPIE, which is all about stories of fantasy, mythology, and adventure: / @mysticalmagpie-wo5fn

I've just finished the longer version, what a curious, quite brilliant novel. I'll listen to this shorter one at some point. Thanks for uploading!

Collins is such a master. Love The Moonstone and his other works. This is well produced.

I've got several Collins adaptations on the channel (there's a playlist), including The Moonstone, and an earlier version of No Name starring Sophie Thompson (sister of Emma). That version's much longer and therefore a little slower but it's a great story either way...

Magnifique ! Collins at his best was the equal of Dickens or any of the Great Victorians . His female characters were more complex than any of Dickens' creations and ( thankfully ) lacking in the cloying sentimentality which marred much of his work . No Name is melodrama .....but of the highest quality.!

Hi. Thank you for uploading another version of no name by Wilkie Collins. I have now listened to both versions. I wonder which version is closer to the text of the original novel as some of the plot details are very different to each other?

Reducing the length of a story often means 'rewiring' it in some ways - so generally speaking, the longer the adaptation, the closer it is to the book. I think another sign that the longer version is truer to the book in this case is that it keeps a few plot developments that modern audiences might see as too convenient to be plausible - the story of thing that an adapter might choose to adjust unless they felt a particular loyalty to the original text... A good example of that would be the death of Little Nell in The Old Curiosity Shop, which is notorious for being drawn out and overly-sentimental... but when the book was adapted for BBC radio in 2002, Nell actually dies 'off-screen', so to speak - her would-be rescuer arrives too late and simply finds that the poor girl has passed away. The scene is very quiet and sad as a result - a good example of a modern adaptation deliberately changing something to make it suit contemporary tastes better.

@@mysteriousmagpie I always do like to have different versions of dramas and audio books. I hadn’t heard the 2007 version of no name in a long time. A drama that I was thinking of that might fit mystical magpie is brother dusty feet. It’s set in Elizabethan England and hasn’t been broadcast on the radio for a very long time.

The longer 1989 version (also on the channel) is also great - though of course somewhat drawn out by comparison at about 5-and-a-half hours. It's incredibly atmospheric though and quickly becomes engrossing.

Almost a Dickens, but more feminine in story.
