I traded for a pair of Weber 44's that had caught on fire on one side. So I bought a chinese copy for like $ 75 on Amazon. Just to rob the ventures & the squirt stacks. I thought everything was very made - copied - except for the brass parts. If I was to run one - I would use actual Weber jets & tubes Excellent video breakdown.

From everything I could tell, all of the parts are interchangeable and yes, I’d only use Weber jets to ensure they are the correct size.

Hey Gary, we've install hundreds of those exact China made IDFs. Both 40IDF and 44IDF's too. Never had any problems with using them in 5 or more years. The only issue lately is we've had the accelerator pump diaphragm seal leak on 40IDF's we recently ordered in two different batches. However, the batches of 44IDF's we've been buying had no issues with leaking at all. We solved the problem buy installing a new diaphragm and tightening the screws a bit tighter than previous. We often down size the venturies on 44IDF's or upsize on 40IDF's to suit the 1776 type1 motors and 2056cc Type4's. Otherwise very happy with brand (or no name brand) you have demonstrated

Ive had a couple of no name eastern carbs, you need to watch out for un marked jets with odd sizes, and poor assembly , but by far the worst is 'Zink Rot' or 'Zink Sickness' where the metal casting starts to crack and crumble, usually around screw holes or the fuel spigot. Humidity and/or cold seem to be the cause.
@VWJawbreaker
@VWJawbreaker 2 года назад
Pretty sure I said it in the video, either measure the jets and verify or run known jets. Haven’t seen anything to do with the rot before on many different carbs but I’ll keep an eye out for it. There’s plenty of humidity here in Florida.

Since you have it narrowed down to cylinder 2, check the idle jet to ensure it’s not clogged and blow out that circuit with compressed air very well with the idle jet and mixture screw removed. Next check to make sure you don’t have a vacuum leak on that cylinder. Check valves because that could cause that issue as well.

Would you recommend one of these for a single carb setup on a DP 1600? All stock except Pertronix SVDA distributor with Flamethrower coil and some type of "other than stock" exhaust. I haven't decided what I want for a muffler yet but it's going on a Thing and I want to use the stock exhaust port holes on the bumper. I'll probably do the Tri Mil Euro 2 tip.

I've just recently got back into VW'S, had a bunch when I was a lot younger so I'm basically relearning everything. I have a 2110cc in a 63 baja, 110 cam, slightly better than stock DP heads, SVDA distributor, merged EMPI exhaust, and used 40 IDF carbs which I believe to be these clones. Engine idles perfect and good WOT but off idle to 1/4 throttle is terrible. Surges and stalls until I get rpm's up and or more throttle. The crossbar linkage looks ok except for the bolts on the lower end of the heim joints, one attaches close to carb and the other is about 1 inch longer. So geometry looks good from left to right on both sides of linkage but different angles from front to back if that makes sense? That being said I'm not sure that would throw it off enough to make the carbs open slightly different at part throttle but something is definitely not right. Another issue I'm having is the vacuum ports don't seem to have enough vacuum to advance the distributor. It's running from both carbs to a T and then to the distributor but has zero effect on it, only advances mechanically. I apologize for the long novel here, you seem to know a heck of a lot more than I do! I've swapped out the distributor but haven't tried mechanical advance only. Put the 34 pict 3 carb setup that was on the car originally before I rebuilt it and basically ran the same as far as part to 1/4 throttle. What could you recommend for a good throttle linkage so I can at least eliminate that problem? I'm having a lot of fun and I'm determined to get this thing dialed in, any advice would be appreciated. I guess I should mention that the mains are 125, air correction 200 and idle jets are 55, not sure what emulsion tubes? Thanks again
@VWJawbreaker
@VWJawbreaker 3 года назад
Glad you’re back into VW’s! Well, that stumble could be a couple of things. Ensure valves are adjusted correctly, no vacuum leaks at the heads or carbs, throttle shaft areas. As for linkage, I really like the CSP center pull linkage. Best one I’ve used so far. You’re jetting sounds pretty good, you would need F11 emulsion tubes for dual carbs. Here’s a great article on jetting www.aircooled.net/vw-carburetors-jetting-102/ I’d tend to look at the accelerator pump and pump adjustment.
@Golden-ui5um
@Golden-ui5um 3 года назад
@@VWJawbreaker thanks for your input, I adjusted the valves yesterday for the first time and checked the float levels and idle jets as well. I'll check for air leaks, that makes sense and could also be the reason I'm not getting good vacuum from the ports off the carbs for the distributor. I used the stock style metal intake gasgets cause that's what I had, those things never made sense to me? Would paper one's work better between intake and heads? I'll check the emulsion tubes and maybe get some weber jets in case the ones I have aren't accurate. Did you ever use the jets that came with the cheaper carbs?
@VWJawbreaker
@VWJawbreaker 3 года назад
@@Golden-ui5um for dual carbs I’ve had better luck with the paper intake gaskets vs the metal ones. Not to mention the metal ones are a one use only type of gasket. Without having a proper gauge to check the jet sizes, going to Weber brand jets would be a safe thing to do. I’d still look at your accelerator pump adjustment, there shouldn’t be a ton of threads showing. Back then off, then slowly add a turn at a time until it accelerates properly.
@Golden-ui5um
@Golden-ui5um 3 года назад
@@VWJawbreaker I did look at the threads on the pump, the nut is cranked way down on the threads on both carbs. I'll reset them the way you did in the video and get some better manifold gaskets.

@VWJawbreaker
@VWJawbreaker 3 года назад
Something with the way the holes are in the other tubes and size of the holes makes them richer and lean out in different areas. I’m no expert in all that, I’m going off of what the experts say, like John at AirCooled dot net for example. F11’s for dual carbs and F7’s for a single dual carb.
@tommiesmith3369
@tommiesmith3369 3 года назад
The F11 is great for most Dual carb setups with 36/37 or smaller vents . The f2 may play well with a 48IDF . Each emulsion tube as specific characteristics based on O.D. Of the tube and how much fuel is in the galley - along with location of air inlet holes which dictate richness of the mixture provided to the secondary venturie- float height and emulsion tube also dictate when main jet stack takes over . As a gauge about 25% of throttle position is idle jetting A decent portion of this also gets a little adjusted fuel delivery based on mixture screws. Mains are in full control at 75% to 100% full throttle Everything in between is controlled by main,emulsion tube and air corrector . Not exactly on the above but is good gauge for idea
