I'm sitting on my bathroom floor right now, crying because I've had my lazy eye for 18 years now and it haunts me everyday. I never feel confident. I never let people take photos of me. It really sucks because, I am a cosplayer and my whole hobby and life is very cosmetic and the fact that I cannot ever experience this happiness and this bliss because I'm too poor,, just really hurts.

THIS SURGERY IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT!!!!! I walked around for a long time very self conscious of my eye shifting. I avoided eye contact and pictures because I was always worried my eyes would not be straight. Dr. McDonell corrected this problem and I could not be happier. It was covered by my insurance and the recovery was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. If you have this condition I highly recommend getting it corrected.

Mommyd10t i had the surgery in 2012, started doin exercises round this year wearing an eye patch and believe me it does help a little. Get eye patch and do exercises. I'm 18 and have strabismus. Honestly it affects me everyday because I frequently get double vision. My eye doctor keeps bumping my prescription up which sharpens my vision but makes me see double more often. I hate it when people ask me where I'm looking and to look them in the eye because shit I thought I was. But finally after many years of being made fun of I have been referred to a surgical consult. Maybe this will be the answer to my prayers?!? Fingers crossed 🤞

I feel the same way, pushing that half-century mark too. I don't lack confidence, I've only been experiencing it for about 12yrs, if someone notices it or asks what's wrong with my eye, I'll say what's wrong with yours or nothing's wrong, lol, that's my innate defense mechanism I guess, I totally understand others who aren't as confident, I know kids and younger adults can be so cruel. It's just a weaker eye and yes, I wish I didn't to have deal but I have so much more to be grateful for, I can see, not 20/20, but I'm not completely blind. 😁

He'll need more surgeries in the future. The brain will turn the eye until vision therapy corrects the brain anomaly that caused it in the first place. You cut into your kids healthy muscles for no reason, and now he'll have scar tissue and will never be able to correct the source of what's causing the eye turn in the first place.

i’ve gotten 4 surgeries and my eye still drifts. what i do to help it is use an eyepatch at home when i’m going to be focusing on one specific area (like if i’m reading or using my phone) and just continuously do that until your eye muscles strengthen. outside of my house, i usually wear glasses with little to no subscription because the frames help my eye from drifting. i’ve been doing both of these consistently for about a year and so far it’s been good and my eye drifts a lot less, usually only when i’m focusing on something intently but it’s getting better!

I have this from early childhood and gotta say It impacted my life probably a lot more than anything else. There's a lotta people I wanted to meet, a lot of things i wanted to do but it fked with my confidence. Middle and high school was like hell. Everyone would make fun of it, call it out infront of the entire class for no reason. Somehow I used to hold my tears. Things actually improved in college since my friends are more mature now and don't bring it up much often. But honestly even though I try to mask it with humor and makes jokes of myself for it in front of friends, deep down it hits like a truck. Takes me days to recover from one awkward incident.

Things went ok at first until they started asking if I can see or was I born with it all meaning well but it became over bearing for me, I graduated and got a distinction, after 8 long years I was the only student to top the field in which I was studying I remember at the graduation I was introduced to a host of representatives from some top companies in my country as they come to graduations as part of an agreement with the institute to scout the best young talents I gave up that dream I couldn't be around too much people I never got a job working for a company or a firm that had a number of people I instead started doing odd jobs cleaning peoples yards and so on, jobs that would just be me alone I was scared of going out into the world sometimes I would look back at life and wish I wasn't like this I probably would be well off in life with the opportunities I was given career wise I just ran...This maybe hard to ask but don't let it get to you take it from me kid it's not easy saying that but trust me it can mess your life up if you let it...

Funny how the first Dr we saw pushed and said we needed to do for surgery right away (since he specialized in it) and another Dr said take a wait and see (that sat better with me). So, I think we will just have the eye deviation measured every year to see if it goes any more out of whack

This dude is amazing what a great thing he did. I don’t think any person who doesn’t have crossed eyes could understand how much this probably meant to her. It makes me want to cry even talking about mine bc it’s like my biggest insecurity even though I try not let it bother me, it still does. I’ve had 2 surgeries and they both did something but they’re still not straight by any means. It sucks being told you can’t fix it and that it’s only going to get worse as you get older it’s just scary and it makes me sad. I know one day I’ll have the money to do this again and if I can find this dude it’s overwith lol I wish I could give everybody w this issue in the comments a big hug bc i used to beat myself up about it a lot more and I know how it feels but tbh I think it adds character and it makes you a little more empathetic towards other people and their insecurities... Life is beautiful and I’m just really thankful to even be able to see In the first place😊

honestly more and more people are getting this because we are staring at our phones all day and our eye muscles are shrinking what we need to do is exercise these occular muscles by: reading large books more doing eye movement exercises (left right, up down, diagonal, look at pen as u move it back and forth near/away from nose, doing circular movements clockwise and counter) i did that when i started to notice my left eye was moving a bit higher and and out than my right and now they are perfectly centered but u must do this everyday, 2-3 times about 2 min each time. It's very easy😎😎😎😎😎

I have a question. When I let my eyes go out of focus, my right eye drifts rather drastically outward. I can sort of control this, however it often happens without me realizing. Strangely, when I cover my left eye (the "good" one), and let my eyes go out of focus, I can make that eye drift outward as well. But the problem is obviously most prevalent in the right eye. What could this condition be, and how could your services help?

2:20 - Functional vision means that you can achieve stereopsis (3-D viewing) and have normal depth perception. This is very rare to achieve post surgery. While Vision Therapy does not have a 100% success rate for strabismus, it's the only way to re-train the brain in order to achieve functional vision. Cutting muscles won't train the brain.

My cornea in my left eye burst a little while back. I’m using the ointment the dr has told me to use. I know it’s going to be a long journey. But I’m really tired of the drop in confidence because of my eye. My eyes are a light brown and big so I was always complimented on them. Now I hate for anyone to ask why I keep my eye closed.

Ive always been dealing with my right eye, but at younger ages my brain could still ‘ignore’ one eye or force my eyes to work together, therefore i thought its just normal what im seeing, and it isnt anything serious. However now that im older, and especially my past year, ive been seeing double heavily as an adult brain loses the ability to ignore an eye. This has really impacted me heavily, and is straining m constantly as i cant look properly. Ive had surgery on this when i was 11, but i dont remember anything anout it, all i know is that im very troubled with my eyes right now as im too scared to drive. The doctors are being very slow in my procedure as ive gone to them half a year ago, asking for a new surgery. Some tests were done, but it all happens extremely slowly while i keep struggling more and more with my eye. This situation has leas me to get really down since its depressing to live with such a chaotic sight. (I constantly see 2 very unaligned pictures diagonally) Sorry for my bad english, i dont know why im commenting this anyway, i think im just hoping to find more people with this that can relate. I could really use someone to relate to as i have trouble properly explaining to people how this feels, especially since they have no way of understanding since they dont have it. (Cant blame them for not understanding)

Reading the comments, alot of people are care alot more about the embaressment and how it looks, to clarify; its not that visible for me. So im surprised i dont see people too upset about that like i am

Get the Surgery ... i got it 43 years ago when i was 4 years old and it allowed my eyes to align and start working together. It took time for my brain to retrain to accept images from both eyes simultaneously. If you get the alignment correct the body will retrain, especially if you force yourself to use the weaker or brain ignored eye some of the time. I tried patches and therapy and exercises and all that ... and you just can't do active therapy enough to overcome a muscle strength imbalance because your body wants to revert back when tired . I have perfect alignment and have learned to be able to switch between stereo vision and monocular (either eye) based on need ... i have zero depth perception issues an played all sports and just so you know was great at hitting a baseball!!!. As a child i had severe amblyopia and strabismus and about a +5 diopter prescription. If your case is severe get the surgery. In my opinion, the younger the better in terms of outcomes.

Dear Doctor! Thank you very much. I would like to be helped one last time. I had the hypertropia in the left eye. Now, I am 6 weeks over eye muscle surgery. My doctor told me before, i have 8 prism diopter vertical difference and she operates it with 2,5mm down from its current place. ("weakening" the superior rectus / upper straight muscle as i remember) She operated it. Its way better, but not perfect. I still have a hypertropia. I feel it and it can be seen in the mirror. She said i had 8 prism dioptres, and if so, i can guess now i have about 2-3 prism dioptres vertical squint. An important information: it was a "simple" operation with sutures applied, but not with adjustable suture./ not an outpatient surgery. As i mentioned its way better, but i would gave everthing to go under operation once again in my life, to fix it properly. Your personal opinion would be life saver for me. I really admire Your work. You are fantastic. Thank you very much.

hello im nicole and im a junior high student and i have been dealing this thing all my life . . . my right eye just bulge right up and i hate it . . . when i'm playing ball with my friends we always fight because they always tease me for not catching the ball and usually go to the principal's office for fighting . . . and when looking through the mirror my eyes just look perfectly straight but when looking through my lazy eye on the mirror my good eye just went upward like " what happened to my eyes!? " does eye patching really corrects the lazy eye or just corrects the visual periferences of the lazy eye ?

Hi Nicole. Patching will not straighten your eyes at your age. Sometimes it helps in very young children. Luckily, today we have a way to get your eyes straight.

Hello everyone. I was born with a lazy eye and strabismus has undergone corrective surgery in my country, but they are not very successful. Over the years, I have been able to correct the problem of time with different diopter glasses and now I still wear glasses with different diopter glasses, but now I feel much better than I did when I was a teenager. I have high self-esteem and at the moment my problem is noticeable only when I am very tired. The problem is small and psychological, but I have always scratched and never gave up. In my opinion, it is very important after surgery to write the correct glasses for correction, because otherwise you can go back to the starting position. Certainly everyone should consult an ophthalmologist (at the earliest possible childhood), but I only describe what I went through .... I'm sorry I don't speak good English, but I try to learn it ......

Am 18, I have temporary squint, My eyesight is weak (-8 both) and that's why sometimes my left eye squints outward when I feel lethargic but not forcefully I know when I am doing it but don't know why, I can fully control it. I mean I can control if I want my left eye to go squint or the right one(which is perfectly fine). Don't know if this is really some talent or just some coincidence that I can decide when to squint and which eye too.

Yeah, i at age 22 I tried patching. After two weeks of semi-consistent use I went from being unable to read with my bad eye with or without glasses to being able to read from a comfortable distance without glasses and being able to read fine text at an arm's length with the glasses on. I think I need a new prescription because when I tilt my glasses slightly to the side I see crystal clear, almost as well as in my good eye! Also, I can once again (maybe for the first time?) feel depth perception. I can tell exactly how far all things are for me. When I look at 3d graphics I can see all of the shapes move and I can tell which is in front of which. Iwanna cry. Seeing is beautiful. Don't trust the doctors when they tell you it's too late, try patching before throwing a big sum at a surgery. Maybe try surgery after patching. I didn't even use a proper eyepatch, I simply covered the glass on the good side with a handkerchief and it worked. It's that simple.

I suffer from something that I'm not sure what it is. Basically I can get either of my eyes to look outwards, so one eye is facing outwards and on eye is looking forwards. This happens a lot when trying to focus, or looking at something for too long. I can also make my eyes do it. Is this strabismus or something else?

Love this video. It's so true - so many of our patients come to our clinic thinking there was nothing that could be done to help straighten their eyes. Many were given bad advice. And our most common feedback is 'I wish I had done this sooner'. For many, if they had known - they would've done it sooner!

I get ask so many questions like are you see double? who are you watching? some people try to get my attention by waving their hands in front my face like I'm some what blind... sometimes i try to boost my confidence by saying hello to a person and 90% of the time they'll turn around thinking I'm talking to someone behind them...when walking through a crowd of people after school I try to make the lowest amount of eye contact possible ( keep my head down and walk ah bit fast ) I want to get this surgery but his a historical thing where me and my sister got it from our mom(also her other siblings) they got it from they're mom and so forth and they lived with it for all of their lives me I'm afraid me getting surgery might make things a bit betrayal I'm 17 btw and still lives in my parents house

When I was a toddler I had crossed eyes and the right eye start to go to the opposite way at 11 12 years old. I have a lazy eye since. When I was 25 i've met a surgeon who told me it was not possible to fix it... Then this year in march i've decided to have an appointment with a new one and he says it is possible to correct it ! Im waiting for the surgery now. It is so hard to live with a lazy eye so many people have rude reaction. If you have the same issue and met a doctor or a surgeon who told you to give up the idea of fixing the strabismus don't lose hope and try to contact another one.

My right eye is a lazy eye. Its noticeable but not bad. It doesn't drift away or anything it's almost like it isn't aligned. I have had 2 corrective surgeries done and it has not changed. But I now have a permanent puffy eyelid. I have just come to be ok with it and embrace it. It is what makes me you know me. It sets me apart from others.
