What new feature may appear in the way of lenses and cameras for using tilt and shift. New designs expand the range of design options, but probably don't suggest it's time to retire your Canon TS-E and Nikon PC-E lenses

The Mamiya Press had a tilting back. I used this camera in the 80s.I even had the 250mm f5 which was a beast. I rarely used the tilting back as it was too clunky in operation.

@@KeithCooper The lenses they produced for this camera were some of the sharpest I have ever used especially the wide angle ones. There are some examples on Flickr.

When I was a small child in the 1970s, I was worried about the question - How does he divide my image into 6 ID cards? The photographer was moving something on his large-format wooden camera. I thought it was dividing me into 6 images. How funny it is to remember today.

Maybe the idea is to tilt the plane of focus fast, then merge it using AI to get an image that is taken with long lens and fast aperture, but still has very deep depth of field. I bet that would be handy with security cameras, and also could allow changing the focus point from the RAW image data and selecting what ever depth of field in post editing. Or maybe tell it what depth of field you want, without changing aperture. That sort of system also might not require similar focusing system or it being as accurate than normal cameras. Could be handy for all sorts of stuff, not just photos but also video. Or maybe i just didnt understand the whole thing properly.

Changing focus after capture would be similar to plenoptic or light field cameras. If you read the patents there are a lot of diagrams showing the plane of focus looking along a street. The mechanisms for the internal shift/tilt are similar to lens IS units - so of similar speed. As to security stuff, merging it with AI could well cause evidentiary concerns if the resulting video was used in court [obviously depends on where you are]

isn it tilting the front standard (lens) changes the focus plane; tilting the back standard (film or sensor) changes the perspective?

Doesn't work so 'neatly' with T/S lenses, where the relative movements are smaller than the classic view camera. It's about relative movements. 'Rear standard tilt' can also be looked at as effectively pointing the camera in different direction... Think of pointing off axis at a scene and then re-centring it with shift. Yes that can be thought of as changing the apparent perspective... The combination of movements is something I'll be looking at when I get a Fuji 30mm TS lens, since it has a lens foot, so the camera tilts

@@KeithCooper Thanks for the answer Keith, appreciated. Just want to clarify, are you saying due to the size of the sensor, the tilting of either the front standard or the back standard will essentially function the same way? I have my gfx 100 mounted on a Sinar P2 and have been shooting it with a Rodenstock 150mm digital lens but I rarely touch the back standard except for focus purposes only. So if what you say is true it is actually more beneficial to just shift and tilt the back standard instead of the front standard, right?

The GFX/sinar use depends on what you are doing, how close and why - 150mm is quite long, even on the 33x44 sensor of the GFX A combination of movements is likely needed to allow for optimal use of the system [I've not been able to borrow one of these to test and do articles about] THE book you need to read [apart from mine ;-) ] is FOCUSING the VIEW CAMERA by Harold Merklinger www.trenholm.org/hmmerk/download.html This is the book which inspired me to think differently about lens/camera movements and write my own book for tilt/shift lens use. A second book by Merklinger 'The INs and OUTs of FOCUS' helped change how I see camera focus and banish 'hyperfocal distances' from normal use.

The sports photography applications got me interested. Just earlier today I was photographing the Finnish Cross Country Running Championships. The possibilities of such lenses/sensors get me hopeful we might someday see a product like that.

Yes - quite a few of the patents have quite long focal length examples. Not for the sorts of shots I tend to use shift with.
