More of a mindless ramble-fest than a video essay, but nonetheless! It's something I've been thinking about for years! Twitter: / dramajosh03 Discord: / discord
@@Alakazam_Attraction Yeahhh it's an inside joke I have with some friends where I pronounce it "Retro-versity" but I forgot to just pronounce it normally for the video because I was tired and rambly haha
To be fair the soundbites sound a lot less kermit-y than the impression I'd personally fall somewhere in between slimy and fruity but with a bit more fluctuation in pitch Also my interpretation of rouxls is that he puts on a voice, so I like to imagine that he drops it and just yells normally when he goes "GOD DAMMIT"
I personally like Revtrosity’s voice for Rouxls, and with Spamton, having a not agreed upon voice kinda makes sense because he’s so all over the place and everything
My Take is that whenever he drops the old English Accent, he just speaks with a very Lo-fi and relaxed Voice, just like how his main theme is much more louder and faster unlike his shop theme.
If he's the singer in both Now's Your Chance To Be A and Big Shot, then it means that the Neo transformation caused his voice to get deeper. His speech byte actually gets deeper after the transformation too (if you don't believe me, look both of them up and compare).
Spamton always says the lines in his themes with a different voice pitch. Sometimes it is very low, sometimes very high. It is hard to tell exactly which one is his actual voice from these samples, so the community agreed voice makes sense.
i feel like rouxls himself just cycles through all of these honestly, depending on the context, which honestly feels very in-character somehow i honestly can't keep to just one interpretation myself when voicing the game for fun for my friends, which makes him REALLY fun to voice act!! he's so all over the place, i love it
I like to think the voice that says “now’s your chance to be a big shot” is Spamton’s real voice. It’s silly :> I know we can like, also hear his laughter. But they’re sorta similar.
My guess is sans voices categories would be: Patrick, whisper/sigh (the more soft voices that seem to be said in sighs), Uncle (the voices that seem more mature and guttural), and suave
@@monke7919 grunkle Stan??? Never heard that before unless it's an Underfell Sans, from what I heard everytime is like a Patrick, but only the execution of the voice is different but that's obvious because not everyone is gonna do the same thing exactly the same
My take on Rouxls is that he just always has different voices he puts on depending on any situation he is in (MOTI's Rouxls Kaard songs come to mind). He makes the rules, he can just do that even if it pisses people off
When I think of Rouxls, I either think of Revtrosity's voice for him or the Man On The Internet voice for him. I like to think of his being a combination of the two.
Man on the Internet is my personal favorite. Retrovosity just makes him sound too badass imo, like an actual competent hero. He should sound like he's pathetic guy trying too hard to be cool, which MOTI hits the nail on perfectly.
@@Yuni-is-Schrodingers-FoxI do like Rev's voice and such for Rouxls, but, yeah, man is a lot more competent there than he's ever been in actual Deltarune lol
Regarding Spamton, it’s definitely intended that his voice is a combination of his canon voice, and that the boxed words are supposed to be read in different voices entirely, like a call service agent for [[hyperlink blocked]], or a 90s ad for [[4.99]].
I think a major reason is because he doesn't have a unique text noise. The little text noises go a long way toward giving a base for voices to work off. Also I feel like the community largely has agreed on Spamton, he's Gilbert Gottfried with a bunch of commercial clips spliced in.
I think this kinda fun disparity in headcannons is partially a consequence of Rouxls not having a unique text sound. Most important UT/DR characters have a certain sound play whenever they're speaking and that's somewhat helped inform what people think they sound like. Characters like Toriel and Noelle have soft and gentle sounding text noises because they're gentle characters that speak softly and comfortingly on most occasions. Sans' sound is very deep and slow, cause he's a chill, calm guy usually. Papyrus' is sharp and precise, Queen's is high-pitched and loopy, King's is low and raspy, everyone's speaking sound matches what you'd expect these characters to sound like. Rouxls.... Doesn't have one. He has a set of expressions like most important characters, but he (along with Catti, Jockington, and a few other hometown monsters) speak using the generic text scrolling sound. That's a shocking crucial piece of the puzzle when it comes to knowing what a character sounds like, all we have to go off of in terms of that now is his personality. The trick to that is Rouxls' personality is all over the place and somewhat up to interpretation, which leads to everything you talked about here. Interestingly, there WAS a text sound for him added in chapter 2, but it went unused and honestly sounds kinda unfinished so I take it with a grain of salt when guessing what the funny blue man sounds like. (Edit: Note to self, learn to watch videos to the end before commenting)
I personally really like the Man on the Internet Rouxls voices. First one because I find it funny and the second one is a good singing voice in my opinion.
I would personally love a Ralsei video, because I think people are pretty conflicted on how old they make him sound; one extreme is straight up anime girl voice, and the other is softspoken tenor. I would like to hear your opinion on them :D
I didn't realize how indecisive the community has been on his voice. I felt like the game always gave me the impression with both his text, actions, and design that he was like a napoleon caricature with an extreme European accent!
I LOVE the canon voice! It takes the silliness to such an extreme, and extremes are very much Rouxls Kaard. Also, I’d be absolutely interested in this format of video done for other characters as well!
im more concerned about the community chosen voice for queen, she uses little to no punctuation in her sentences and starts every word with a capital letter, makes me think she would speak sort of like a text-to-speech program in terms of pacing and doesnt take any pauses, while still having that regal sort of voice with an unchanging tone, in my head thats what made the delivery of her lines so funny. i would love to see someone voice her like this
To me Rouxls is kinda supposed to have a varying voice, since he can manufacture an accent. He's kinda like a voice actor who's always in character, and goes off the top of his head depending on the situation XD So we never really get to tell his "real" voice
Ah yes, truly an excellente video. I think mixing the "slimy" voice and the "canon" voice would be good for Rouxls in my opinion. And tbh, it was really nice to see that you actually found ways to compliment all of the options, despite having a clear favorite, which is ok!
Damn, you seem to be quite experienced person in the field of voice acting. Of course I would want to see you talk about other characters in the future!
The same problem with Spamton, is he New York-ish? Is he like a weirdo salesman? Is he like a game show host? Do you only give him the 80’s microphone voice changer for when he speaks with square brackets? IS LITTLE SPONGE EVEN A SPONGEBOB REFERENCE? I NEED TO KNOW!!!
Wait, little sponge is thought of to be a spongebob reference? I always thought it was meant to be him saying one was absorbent, taking in whatever by nature
That's super interesting. My Rouxls Kaard headcanon voice is closer to the second one. I give him the same voice as my Mettaton impression (but without a robotic filter and just a tiny bit deeper) because he's very dramatic (kinda like Mettaton) and takes himself too seriously.
Voted on the poll already, but I might as well mention it here too- I picked the slimy one but I love the bombastic one just as much, however I could also see myself growing fonder of the "canon" voice, it's so silly and sounds almost like a muppet voice, I love it. And while other fanon decided voices probably aren't as widely varied for other characters, it'd still be interesting to see you doing something like this again!
I'm personally a really big fan of the 3rd voice, the Fruity One. I really like how it feels like a more fancy version of Payrus' voice, and I feel like Rouxls fills a similar role that Papyrus filled in UT
I LOVE THE KERMIT ONE, it's so over the top, and has such a cursed energy to it that really captures that hate and confusing love players seem to have for the character
"The Slimy One" honestly just sounds like an I.M. Mean reference, lmao. I personally like the high-pitched over the top flamboyant voice most, I think it fits with his theatrical idiot and failwife personality. He doesn't strike me as someone who's actually cruel, he just feels like he needs to be a foil to be worth anything lol.
Seam would be cool to see, actually! Not many people have done voices for them, but every one I've seen on RU-vid so far (Including my own, even if it's not on RU-vid) has been different!
Personally partial to voice 3 myself. Also, very good vid. If you were to do a future one, I'd like to see a jevil one the most, but I'd be ready to hear about any character you're interested in.
As someone who gravitates toward the bombastic cloud [Mostly LVoid and all his meme compilation dubs], I am genuinely intrigued by the sinister category now with the complexity it brings to the table. You have opened my eyes.
Suprising. Usually the fandom agrees so much for what voices undertale characters have that it's been labled a hivemind. Its probably because in game he has no voice clip, though there is one in the files, it's not very well known.
I feel like there's still a lot of ways to interpret the canon voice. I remember hearing the text tones and interpreting it as something closer to the boisterous voice actually
Ive always given him the kind of yelly voice papyrus has, like yelling every sentence, just fits his theme (aka the music that plays when he’s on screen)
Roulxs is like the only character I always do the voice for. I don't know why, but I just cannot help myself from reading his lines out loud. I imagine that he's sort of a mixture of papyrus and the fruity one, but of course that's just my take in what he sounds like
Personally, the "Fruity" sounds closest to me, though I've always looked at Rouxls and thought he'd sound like Justin McElroy using his voice for Taako from Adventure Zone (whose voice was largely developed from doing an Emo Phillips impression) with maybe a hint of his "Posh" voice that he does sometimes (see the "Book Jaundice" bit from MBMBAM or his role as Billiam Milliam on OK KO).
He doesn't have a *voice* if he changed his accent as Ralsiei points out before the chapter 2 fight begins. Rather, he has *voices.* Thus, making it impossible for anyone to get together and agree for a canon voice if it varies every chapter.
I think my headcanon is the bombastic and the sinister one, sinister for when hes talking normally (for example, in his shop) and bombastic for when hes.. well.. bombastic. (for example, acid tunnel and the "puzzles" in Ch1) As for Spamton, Alex Rochon's voice for him.
I'd make Roulx's voice sound like #2, but with pitch a little lower and with #1's accent, and a little from numbers 4 and 5 as well So, all in all, i don't really have an idea 😅
I think as a singing voice, Man on the Internet’s two lyrical adaptations of Rouxls’ theme fit perfectly, even if they’re completely different interpretations. It just screams Rouxls Kaard.
Ever since Chapter 1 I’ve ALWAYS voiced him with a loud, over the top Swedish / German accent. Don’t ask me why, it just fit with how his speech was and I thought it was hilarious Nearly cried tears of joy when he appeared in Chapter 2, screamed for about a whole minute lol
Rouxxls is the type of vibe where the entire class is groaning and sighing over having to popcorn read out loud Shakespeare and one kid got waaay into voicing Mercutio😂
Personally I would like to see Mettaton voice. From what I notice there's 3 directions the voice tends to go, there's more robotic versions most of which were most prominent in the early days, a more TV host personality voice that aligns with Mettaton's role as a TV celebrity, and a more sultry voice that mimics the "Oh Yes" we hear in Undertale. It's hard to find a good example to compare this too, if you're familiar with Hunter X Hunter I would say its somewhat similar to the Dub voice for Hisoka.
This was an amazing video! It’s so great to have a video that discusses Fanon voices of a character. I wouldn’t mind another kind of video on a different character that doesn’t have one agreed upon voice, maybe even outside of Deltarune, like for example DDLC, I find myself frustrated at which Fanon voices feel the most like the main cast, they all sound so good in their own way, I can’t figure out my preferred voices for them.
I feel like theirs more of an idea for Spamton. He’s a sleazy salesman who’s a tiny bit completely unhinged. So people hover around their own ideas of what an aggressive and hyperactive salesman would sound like.
I think a mix of fruity and sinister is what i like best, mostly because i like to do the sinister type voice more often and also because... i mean like look at him. I also really like the "cannon" one
i always imagined roulx sounding just like his actual unused text tones (though, this is the first time i actually heard them). add to it the theatrical and over the top, kinda fruity nature of mettatons “OH YES” and a hot-potato-in-mouth accent. i remember hearing someone doing a voice like that, but i sadly dont remember who it was. i also like to imagine that its not his normal voice and hes just trying to sound more noble - trying to speak deeper and such, so his voice sometimes cracks into a higher one lmao.
I do a bit of a mix of 2 and 1, idk how (I’m terrible at describing voices like damn I have no idea how or any of the terms for voices) but it’s just how I see his voice.
In my onion the Man On The Internet does quite a good Rouxls Kaard voice, and it's quite similar to your impression. I don't even know why but it fits so well
I imagine him screaming all his lines in a high pitched voice. I cannot imagine someone THAT chaotic being anything less than a nonstop assault on your ears
A vid on spamton would also be interesting i think, i literally just made my own spamton dub and this is something ive been thinking about too, spamtons is also so varried like you said. The more in game voice Snake oil salesman Gremlin wanna buy Etc always like him to sound like hes grelim and a "wanna buy a clock" and then obvious changing of the voice during ads. So thats how i went but theirs so many and none sound bad for him, something i read in a comment that feels so real to me is "everyone who voices him gets something right about his character"
My headcanon is that is normal voice is a slightly nasally and pompous one with a minor British accent. However, he just constantly uses clearly faked, exaggerated accents, staking each fake accent on top of the last. So at the end of chapter 2, he would have a nasally, British, medieval, pirate accent. He occasionally drops these fake accents, like at the end of his boss fight
The out of left field Caldwell reference hit me like a truck and its so true XD In the end I think either Slimy or Fruity is my favorite. My personal voice that I use when I play the game is definitely leaning more towards Fruity, but that's just because that's what I can do.
This is really interesting, I think you should definitely do this for sans, gaster, and spamton. You wouldn't think sans but I have heard many interpretations of his voice as well.
Since you mentioned Spamton, my headcanon is that his normal voice has a very heavy Indian accent, and sounds like you're hearing him over a long distance phone call with spotty reception. I'm reluctant to speculate what his bracketed words mean at this point, because I want to know what kind of character Mike is before making that decision.
@@CalvinNoire I want to know if Mike is obsessed with commercials, so I can decide on whether Spamton's bracketed text should sound like audio clips from commercials.
I always imagined his intonation to be a bit on the higher end, carrying an almost jester-like flamboyant energy. I voted for voice 3 as I think that's the closest to what I pictured, and the genuinely serious voices do feel a bit off seeing as how silly and how he doesn't really seem to have much dedication to any particular cause or principles (such as wanting to help you at the start of chapter 2 only to go full chips-ahoyeth later).
i don't think the last voice is "canon" or the closest thing to it, if it was used i could understand why people think it was but i believe the closest canon voice is the one in his chapter 2 fight that says "hey" in the background.
