As much as we care about our own music, it's difficult to accept that total strangers don't share that same enthusiasm about it. Last year I decided to change my mindset from asking people for favors to serving people with value to build trust. In this video, I'll talk more about how this has impacted my career as an independent artist, and how you can steal this mindset to build a community of people who actually care about what you're doing.

Fair. Now also imagine hundreds of great bands from those eras who got dropped from their labels because their A&R rep left the company or some other bit of bad luck. It wasn’t “good old days” for everyone.

@@jasondidner Agree. It's just a bit disturbing that artists have to think about the promotion as much as about making the art itself, if not more. Probably the label deals were not that awful with regards to that particular time aspect.

Don't kid yourself. Back in the bad old days, you weren't "chosen," you kicked, clawed and pounded the pavement until someone gave you a chance. While success was certainly not guaranteed, tenacity and passion was rewarded. It was a game of attrition. Success was shared. Teams of creative people with a diverse array of strengths worked hard at turning a profit; which of course meant, more people heard your music. In today's world, the "it's all on you" model isn't just bad news, it's catastrophic. Very few people have all the skill sets necessary to successfully develop an act and find an audience, including micro-niches. Even if you do have the skills, the time, money and effort spent doing the jobs of many only makes your music suffer. IMO, we've thrown the baby out with the bath water in the name of "independence." The labels have been replaced with monoolistic behemoths like Spotidy, who believe THEY are the sole tastemakers. They decide the rules by which all must play. The so-called "industry" is a colossal joke at this point.

You are romanticizing an absolutely terrible system that existed before this one - one that literally ate itself due to its own greed. The new system is also broken, and I completely agree about Spotify, but the fact remains we all have more control over our own body of work than ever before. Yes, it takes more work. No one is coming to do it for you. But we all have the means to build our own following now even if we begin with zero industry connections.

You speak the truth, my friend. The proof is in the pudding. Music under the big bad old music industry was incredibly good. Most people's favorite artists were brought to their attention under that system, and those artists got paid. These youtube people (that's what they're really doing) ignore the thousands of lower rungs that existed on the ladder of success, back when a song was worth money. The new way of doing things does not work. There are countless musicians making amazing songs- some of them with mass appeal- that are getting nowhere. Lots of bands and musicians are hanging it up. To list the jobs that a musician has to do now would take a while. And all of these algorithm jockeys that tell people how to get listeners either became successful under the old way of doing things, or never even had success as an artist. I'm not aware of any exceptions. I even asked one of these fellows to point me in the direction of a band or two who had success doing what he was saying leads to success, and he angrily could not. Maybe one day people will tire of this rigmarole. Also, the "it's all on you" model was just as viable back in the day, if not moreso. Daniel Johnston gave away handmade cassettes until he got picked up by a record company or whatever happened. The sooner we abandon this sunken ship, the better.

Solid philosophy you've arrived at, fully agree. What particularly resonates w me is freeing your music from the need to be financially successful on its own. This also can mean just embrace your day job, whatever it is. Less artistic angst will start positive feedback loop and counterintuitively might get you closer to where you want to be.

I agree that being happy with your day job is a great way to be relaxed about your music, however I find that the lack of time to focus on music due to family and work is also a stressor...I feel like I'm not able to accomplish anything. I guess I need to work on efficiency..

I like what you saying. I'm personally not a "serious" "content maker"(🤣) so I mostly doing what I like when I like it and how I like it. But it's now. Many years ago I was so serious about my music that I couldn't even release anything. But at some point I understand that I need just to stop appreciate my "content" so much and be able to just share "not perfect" music. So in the end to be able to share my "content" with people I should just take less serious my music, myself, and everything 😊

Todays Revelation: I knew you sounded familiar ...Billy Bob Thornton! 😮 🤣 I've been doing this since 1987, and have avoided things like Spotify at all costs. I've never made an actual living off of my music, but have never really wanted to. And after all this time, the only real money I've ever made are from the sound design efforts I've provided throughout the years. But in all honesty, I've watched YT since the very beginning. I've seen creators come and go, and your idea of building trust through service is an excellent idea ...That is if you can reach enough people that are interested. I like your music, and I like your sound design, but also just as important; your comedic style and personality are what keeps me hooked. Thanks for being you.

I agree, you have to think outside the box . Marketing, RU-vid,.... The only downside is: It does take away some of time actually making music. But it's to only way to survive as an independent artist.

It's exactly why I am practicing making videos on RU-vid, building community both online and offline, and creating value outside of my music compositions. I came here because I was thinking about this subject. I have some jams on my channel but apart from a tiny audience nobody listens, so I wondered should I put more useful content up instead. But after I watched your argument I didn’t completely feel convinced for some reason, and I listened to some music of you tonight. I really find the music better than the RU-vid videos, sorry about that 😉. I am getting increasingly dissatisfied with most synth RU-vid channels that just talk about gear or production lessons,watching those actually distracts me from music. Whereas biting the bullet and just listening to your music even though you are a complete stranger to me, is more satisfying. My ears had to plough through the intense amount of reverb you use because I myself would prefer to dial it back a little bit. But once you listen for a while the ears get used to your style and,…. You make really good music.

Firstly, Merry Christmas. Secondly, If you're wanting to make a living from music, then any route to market has to be tried, until you find something that works. These days it's all about giving your audience a reason to notice you, providing value and entertainment in the form of content certainly makes sense. Being "relevant" also helps - it also depends on how much you want to sell your soul.

Since I do find your content informative and enjoyable, I would like to give back a little. The first : your glasses are kept very clean in this video, sparkling clean, and your hair is def 2007. Now I am a product of the 70’s so my hair and glasses are disheveled, and I consumed a lot of Spaghetti-O’s (tm). As I looked into your glasses (warning: can’t un-see) I became hungry as I once was as a child for those tasty O’s. I had almost forgotten the craving. So, I finally hit the subscribe button because I like what you talk about. I don't take my music as a money making machine. I take it as a medium to transport emotions and my way of experimenting. The reason for this is that I've never planned to make a living from my music. I was out of music for around 20 years because other things were important, for example finding new income after a serious knee disease or the birth of my daughter. The pandemic brought me back. But this does not mean that I plan to become rich by making music with a DAW. Nevertheless, I talk about my music like you do. But I don't take RU-vid, I use my personal blog. And yes, it's really the case: If you give to your audience, you may receive. In terms of bedroom production, I think of Likes, Comments, Sharing. I'm fine with it. And so, I can connect to what you talk about. (I hope you understand what I mean as I am no native speaker.)

I agree. The music "business" is stressful because not only are you trying to get your music to compete with other major successful artists (to become the next platinum hit, for example...), but you are also doing it for profit and to make a lifelong career out of it. However, as long as you do this, you are always competing with no guarantee of success. Even well-known major artists release albums or songs occasionally that become commercial flops compared to something they released previously that became a hit. Then they'll come back with another hit to try to recoup from the loss and continue to stay relevant. Anyway, freeing your music from the "business" side or the desire for financial gain will allow you the freedom to express your creativity the way you truly want to without competing with others. M9st importantly, it will relieve you of stress and make the process of creating music enjoyable again because you are making it the way you want to. Just be YOURSELF instead of catering to a trend or copying a style just to fit in with competitors. Then, you want have any reason to compare your music with anyone else's. It's unique and a way of expressing yourself. We are all unique as human beings.

Loving these big picture topics regarding art and creativity in the modern landscape. The feelings of frustration are real when you really believe in the art you create, but few other people seem to care. You make a very good point about value. My art has value to myself, but my art has not reached many like-minded people who would also value it. In the same way that the stage has always accommodated many different personalities? Is Instagram and RU-vid the modern stage for musicians now?

I don’t know about Instagram anymore, but I am really enjoying the platform RU-vid provides. I certainly never thought of myself as “RU-vidr material” either. I think the more you can incorporate your own personality the better. Most niches are pretty saturated, so the only thing unique I feel I have to offer is my personality and experiences.

Great stuff. There are loads of music RU-vidrs with less talent than you with large audiences. My observation is that they network with each other and piggy back off others to grow / steal new subscribers rapidly. I haven’t noticed you on other channels yet. Just an observation on the clickbait title you have here. More accurate would be "no one cares about your music? Well its just a hobby. Give that up and be a youtuber." Which i agree totally. This "business", as 99% of all business, need networking to grow.... that's what you are doing, also, you are exposing to opportunities and creating something like a portfolio... so you can redirect prospects for reference, or just to be out there with more chances to get opportunities. The World moves faster than anyone can adapt.. and it keeps accelerating. . . so this is dynamic and it changes almost every month (that's what she said)... so each one's own "algorythm" has to be dynamic too. (About the research, I am happy to say that it is not only GAS, ok ok ok, well, it is GAS, but not all. At least I can now auto/justify to myself that I do require that most beautiful Synth)

Interesting viewpoint, but I feel like this isn't universally applicable. There isn't a market for every musican to become a music teacher. I feel like this video (and the dozens saying the same on line) are an admission that "musician" is no longer a viable profession. I am lucky in that I am an ameture and do not expect or need my music to ever make me a penny. But it's very disheartening to see so many on RU-vid saying "it's not a valid goal to try anymore"

I would find it much less disheartening if people started coming out and saying it like that. Music is not worth money right now. It should be, obviously. But if people can't even tell or admit where we are, there's very little hope of us getting somewhere better. I say we scrap the whole thing. RU-vid sucks, streaming doesn't pay and putting a song on the internet is like nailing a painting to a tree in the woods. Why not go back to what's real? At least it exists. We're all just feeding a giant machine that doesn't give us anything in return. Starve it.

Turn your hobby into a career and you'll have neither. The only way not to think about commercial success of your music is to be a financial independent. Otherwise you'll have to "sell" one way or another. Sending unsolicited links to your music is almost as bad as sending unsolicited dickpics. But there are always communities in social media (like genre specific) where people sometimes asking for a new music for themselves or for their playlists. This is where you should post your links. This is almost like zero efforts, but this will bring you plays, playlists and even followers.

That's a good tip. I, like most musicians throughout history, don't have the stomach for self-promotion. I'd much rather have a record label get my band's songs an average of 500 listens and keep the 50 cents, or whatever that comes out to, than have to do the job of a graphic designer, marketer, promoter etcetera. It's bad enough having to mix, master, and engineer your own crap. A song is worth about zero dollars, and people are trying to make money off music. It's absurd.

pro youtubers use google analytics to see what's the buzzwords and put it in the title plain and simple even if its just turn out to be a clickbait and as long as you are charming and providing some useful content or just being entertaining , managing to occupy the very short attention spans - then you are doing good. I enjoy your humor , but I think some more upbeat style and sound effects could really proper your viewership ( and I totally don't say you should copy Andrew Huang)

Oh that’s news to me wish I had thought of that…. 😉 Upbeat style only works if you’re a genuinely upbeat person. If you aren’t it will come across as inauthentic, and authenticity is the most important thing. I’d rather build slowly but with the right people than try to be what I think people want to see. @@JamesonNathanJones sure , but first is exposure and viewing count - then retention of subscribers , one leads to the other .. i've seen all kinds of styles of video's - some try to ride the current buzzwords , some will gain large viewership over time if they are quality and hold some useful thing people search for .. have you looked up what are the keywords that bring viewers your channel ? I think I was looking for some Pro-3 demos . but I don't know if synth nerds alone can propel your channel .
