Rudy, we are from a time of RPG completionists. I would spend hours and hours trying to finish and collect everything in a Final Fantasy game. It's the same way with MTG. It's like you said, the thrill of the hunt for those last few cards you need. I have opened a stupid amount of Kaladesh just trying to physically pull an Aether Vial Invention because of the nostalgia I get from thinking about that card and how much I played it back in Mirrodin standard. When I finally pulled one last week, I finally felt like the effort, time and money was all worth it. Sometimes it's about the ending, but a lot of times it's about the journey we took to get there. Thanks for sharing that collection!

Uhhh people 100% RPGs all the time. There's no indication that it's a trait of a specific time frame, just an obssessive frame of mind. People will be compulsively finishing RPGs for literally as long as they make them.
@Volkbrecht

Durf MTG I feel collecting MTG sets and being somewhat obsessed over RPGs are two very different things these days. Getting a set of MTG together presents no challenge. Just order anything you need from singles' sellers, done. And even if you do, what do you get? Mostly Limited filler crap. It's all available, it's not really useful, it's not worth anything, meaning nobody would pay anything extra just because you got the set complete. It's not even something special, because with seven sets being printed every year, plus other supplemental products, the stuff inevitably starts looking pretty much all the same. RPGs on the other hand are a very personal journey. No Let's-play-video or Twitch stream would be able to replace the feeling you get diving into a well made alternate reality. MTG, especially for the grown-ups among us, is essentially just a statistical game. Crack enough boxes, and eventually you will find your missing card. Not a lot of magic in that.

The same thing completing an RPG tho. You want the 100%, all you have to do now-a-days is just put in the time. it's not like the old FF8, where you had to search every level to get the 100% of stuff.There's no reason he can't feel the same way about pulling that 1 card from a mtg box. Don't think your way of seeing things trumps his buddy.

My guy, everything you said was my childhood MTG experiences. Buying a booster pack, collecting cards and slowly filling up those 9 pocket sheets was the most satisfying, money spent as a kid. Unfortunately, I came from a very poor family so I gave up the collection right about time of Urza's Legacy. I remember my first booster pack ever, my friend and I rode our bikes 2 hours to BUYBACK games, and my first rare card from 1st booster ever was Shiva's Dragon of the 5th edition. I went on to collect Ice Age, Mirage. Man, those were the days. In my 30s, and I would love to buy complete sets for nostalgia's sake. Thanks for sharing. And if you are selling or know where to grab up complete sets, lemme know.
@MGmirkin
@MGmirkin 4 года назад
Shivan Dragon, but yeah. I nicked a black-border Revised edition from an Italian Revised starter deck. Some smarmy little shit stole it from me after he control-magicked it in a game and didn't return it at the end of the game. Then he claimed it was his and he pulled it from a pack. The fuck he did. I should have simply stolen it back and been done with it... I still dislike the little fucker for that and we weren't friends anymore after that. Still salty two decades later...

I would say most hobby collections aren't done for financial gains. Do you collect stamps, video games, cards, old toys; I can't imagine you making a fortune of any of those passions. But we do it anyway, more so because it provides us a sense of permanence in the world, that romance work and family can not. I don't think the transient nature of card finance should really be taken as any indication that said passion is somehow less intrinsically valuable.

True, I collect Yugioh cards but not in sets or for value. I collect the cards I want and organise them the way I want like I did when I was young. Just because that is what is fun for me. I'm new to magic and haven't found the urge to collect it yet unfortunately but I'm keen on deck building for now.

Problem is I imagine if I spent a lot of time collecting the cards it wouldn't feel as special if someone one could replicate all the work put in by just spending $20. Still Agree that's more for the hobby than financial gain though.

I just started playing/collecting Magic the Gathering about two months ago. I’ve been having a great time buying booster packs, a fat pack and singles from my LGS to try to get a complete set finished. For me, it’s just a lot of fun cracking packs and seeing what i get! I almost have the complete Amonkhet set done, minus the invocations of course. Love ya Rudy! Keep up the great videos.

Yeah I just started too and I love the game it’s complex and fun and I enjoy the game to play and create my decks and the card art. But from watching Rudy a lot lately ppl seem to only care about MTG if it’s gonna make them money as it’s only investment to them and they don’t care to play the game so they loose there interest in new sets and value . That’s why I love MTG ARENA bc I can just play to play the game

I left mtg in year 2000 and went back in year 2016. What was most shocking was the mtg players mind, the much they cared about card prices and winning instead of card value (art, other format, future potential). Since kaladesh I have been collecting all Standard sets wich makes a lot of fun, logic and excitement for me. The community here is happy to hace someone like me because I am allways looking for weird cards or without superficial value. And like you say it broke my hearth to see how the players mind have changed in 15 years. Pd: I looked at some videos of you before and allways thought you where less than you actually are, thanks for this videos.

I came back into magic on the release of Kaladesh after a near 20 year absence. Since then I have decided to collect every decent sized set. So Kaladesh (with a near full foil set in addition), Aether Revolt, Amonkhet, HoD, Ixalan, Rivals of Ixalan, Dominaria, Unstable and Battlebond full sets in binders now grace y bookshelf. For the first time in years I am enjoying collecting and I care not about the value. It’s a pure hobby.

I was just at my LGS last night to pick up two of the last cards I need to complete my Dominaria 2018 set. I had no idea no one else was completing sets. For me, I started playing about six years ago when a friend of mine got me into it. We couldn’t play very often and when we did it was always so exciting for me because he had so many cards and decks and the themes were so outrageous that the fun was not in the necessarily winning or losing, but getting to pull off some ridiculous condition. Due to jobs we both moved away from each other a couple of years ago and sadly, he passed away right before Christmas last year. I haven’t played a game since, but the collecting aspect of the game is what brings me joy now. I can look at cards and think about what my friend would do with them or think about past games in which this new card would have made something better. I don’t know, is there really nobody else out there collecting them? Is this another sign that I am getting old? That sucks if so, but I think I’ll continue to collect for my own enjoyment. Once I’m dead, what does it matter that I spent money foolishly?
@FullArmorBear
@FullArmorBear 6 лет назад
It's not only the printing of cards without new art, or overprinting. The way people play magic has changed in the last 20 years. We used to sit at a table and play with our friends, using whatever we had in our collection to play, which would make a complete set more worthwhile.

Nice video Rudy. I started collecting Magic in 1995 when you could buy Antiquities for $15 a pack. And I did. I had collected a full set of that, Arabian, Ice Age etc. It was just a fun thing to do. My greatest battle was the Unlimited set. Only need two cards at this point. Glad I bought my Black Lotus when it was only $250. My friends thought I was crazy. They don't think so anymore.

I think Ice Age is one of the more underrated sets in Magic... Been collecting it for years tbh. As as much bashing as Homelands gets theres a few good cards there. Same goes with Alliances. I havent found much to love about Cold Snap although I have tired to look through it. Unlike a lot of sets... the colors and the artwork really put some FEEL into Ice Age. I haven't yet found a set other then Innistrad and Shadows over Innistrad. And I really wish more sets were so completely tied together... IE theme, color pallet and artwork, and card function.
@ravendethshadow
@ravendethshadow 6 лет назад
I think for me what trivialized collecting sets is the fact of how readily available all the cards are now (at your fingertips even). Not just the sheer quantity but the fact that you can just buy the singles online everywhere instead of having to rip packs or trade your friends for that last rare/uncommon you need to complete the set.

While the monetary value is DEFINITELY a factor, I feel like the art is also huge. In old sets you got a variety of interesting, hand drawn stuff in different artists' different styles. Now you get the same meh artstyle that's all computerized and regulated by WotC

Right, or wrong, I got back into MTG for the first time in a loooooooong time just recently. I’m going old school and building complete set of AFR, and I’ll be damned if I won’t complete it the good old fashioned way 👍🏻. It has given me endless hours so far, all of it immersive and an experience. Sure, I said to myself on at least a dozen occasions- “next time I want a complete set, just buy a MOL redemption set” but not this time. This time is old school fun.

From 2015 through 2017, I put together complete NM sets of every expansion from Arabian to Destiny, plus Revised, Beta common/uncommon, and got within 4 cards of a complete unlimited. I wanted at least one of every RL card. Obviously I could care less for anything more recent. I haven’t played a game of MTG in probably 15 years, just love collecting and finding high condition old school...and watching set values double every couple years.

I hate myself to this day for selling all my cards back in the day. I started back before ice age (dont remember exactly when) and played up until around mirrodin. I had binders with a full playset of complete sets of both mirrodin and legions. Sold almost every card I owned minus a stack I had forgotten at home when I needed some cash and didnt think I'd play anymore after high school. Got $350 for the shoe boxes upon shoe boxes. The binders alone would have crushed that value if i had kept them :( I literally used to work to get money to buy boxes and when I got something I still needed for the playset of either of those sets I put it straight into the binder. Lesson learned in just getting rid of stuff for a quick buck :-/

I still collect full sets. Not for money but usually i buy a booster box of each new set and then buy additional copies of cards for decks and buy singles for all the cards i dont get from the box. I have atleast one copy of every card from each set since M10. I even have the entire Amonkhet/Hour of Devastation Invocations set as well as a good chunk of the Kaladesh Masterpiece and a few of the Zendikar expeditions. At this point im trying to collect all of those. I understand Im likely throwing most of my money away but its a hobby. And I enjoy it! Maybe someday the masterpiece cards will be worth something. Basically once the set rotates out of Standard Format, no one plays it anymore. The Modern Format isn't very popular, at least events near me never ever have a Modern showdown or something. So, why collect the cards you really aren't ever going to play with after some point, right? I used to collect complete sets but now, by the time the hype of a new set is dead and a complete set is more affordable, it just isn't in my interest to buy the cards because there is no place to play them in a Modern Format anymore and frankly, Frank, I don't want to invest in something just to have it sit around and probably never really appreciate into much.

Donny where I live, pretty much every even semi competitive player plays modern. Like we fire modern fnm more often than draft. And we have newer players getting into modern too, so the format is growing. I've even been pushing for legacy events here
@Leftside08
@Leftside08 6 лет назад
I think at least in my area that people avoid modern because they come and go depending on life / free time. While working towards a modern deck would be cheaper and probably better for casual play in the long run, most people rather would take a smaller 100-200 hit playing standard than have a big upfront cost knowing the uncertainty of if they'll even be playing 6 months from now. But that's just the nature of the people I'm around at my LGS.

People buy Magic cards to play Magic. For this purpose, thanks to rotation, either a card literally expires or gets reprinted. In both cases, value goes down. The cards are a disposable commodity. Only the early sets have any historical value. Remember, there must actually be a buyer who has disposable income and interest in collecting cards outside of competitive play. Collectors have plenty of supply, since they are a minority compared to standard players who dump cards after every rotation.

But, to be fair a lot of the cards are just vanilla filler junk that nobody *really* seriously plays with... I mean there are only so many vanilla 1/1 flying birds you can collect before it gets repetitive. Or Llanowar Elf reprints for the 15th time, or watered down giant growth / lightning bolt variants. And there's not a lot of value on those. S'why they're sold by the pound or whatever. They're just not "worth" anything. Barely even the paper they're printed on. I mean sure, each set has a few "chase" cards that retain some value over the years in various vintage / historic formats or whatever... But, they're seemingly few and far between...

this 100x over. Noone is going to shell out big dough for cards that rotate it's not financially smart, and it kills your vibes when a deck you spent time constructing just gets made obsolete by a calender turn. I try to get my sets complete, just from trading and cracking packs. Often friends give me their old collections or stuff they don't need anymore and i sort them into my collection if i don't have them and donate the rest to the next person or a child care institution. collecting and completing a collection is an internally rewarding thing. it scratches my mild ocd to fill a previously empty spot in my binders. A friend of mine just gave me a few thousand cards of his draft jank (from 4th edition until battlebond) and i was happy to include it into my collection and give the rest to a friend who hasn't played in almost 20 years and wants to play again.

Why would you collect new complete sets? Unlike old magic complete sets, they'll never be worth anything, the art is trendy, rather than timeless, and the overwhelming majority of the cards are either very vanilla or functional reprints of older cards.

Making the complete set buying boxes/packs is dumb. However, it's actually pretty cheap to get complete sets, as like already pointed out, not many cards are really valuable. You may just pay less than the total of the valuable cards and get the rest basically for free. Not saying it's a good investment (it's not unlike older sets) and I think this video may give the wrong impression to those who like to complete sets on they own terms. There is more about collecting than just value or a pet card.

I regard collecting and completing a full set of MTG cards or any Card collection as an art form, it seems to be lost but a limited amount of us still do it. The hunt to find each card, to trade for missing gems, to replace lesser versions of a card to a better condition one.

If anything the artwork has degraded when you compare magic now to magic 95, the art was much bolder and looked more painterly the new art just looks so generic.

As a member of the sports card community in addition to Magic, I can tell you that there are way more people collecting complete sports card sets still over Magic now. Sure, they print cards into oblivion and make it almost impossible to get complete sets of anything with all those parallels and autos and whatnot, but people still find a way to do it. I sadly don't know anyone that collects complete sets of Magic sets anymore. Might just be that players are completely focused on 2 or 3 things in a set and that's it. It doesn't help that newer sets are full of garbage for the most part because WoTC doesn't like to print cards that see play outside of Standard for whatever reason. I feel like WoTC is too scared to put powerful stuff in new sets and I'm not sure why. I'm not even sure Dominaria is the start of them getting away from that fear. We'll see. Either way, I appreciate you sharing this collection with us. Gives us some insight on a bygone era.

Eh. Tarkir was, in my opinion, a very good block. But this is mostly for set flavor, not set function.(Despite the fact that tarkir gave us some very fun mechanics) honestly, I think wizards has gotten very wrapped up in keeping out power creep and complex card wordings that they have begun throwing powerful and more importantly Interesting card ideas and mechanics out the window. I know we just got some fun stuff in Core 19, but those were REPRINTS. The same with battlebond. One of the biggest selling points was the REPRINTS. Land Tax, Doubling Season, Scapeshift (Btw, with that new Ravnica coming, gates will be viable. You heard it here first) Crucible of Worlds. All very good and fun cards, but still just REPRINTS. Wizards needs to focus on new, cutting edge rules texts that DO break standard, maybe even MODERN. That is the only way sets will thrive from this point onward. that is the only way collecting sets will be viable

What I enjoyed before with MTG: evenings with friends with beer, burgers and cards, collections, exchanges, hanging out at the corner store for hours, a little tournament from time to time, showing off with your latest nice card... There's too much money now, a lot to much. I mean, I had a lot of cards, Beta set, Alpha set, Guru, Legends set, summer magics, misprints... I sold everything, took a wife, got kids, bought a house, and you know what? I'm getting back to Mtg with them, but only for fun. A very simple cube to play with my kids. I really enjoy it. Before all, Mtg used to be just a game. Don't forget it.

You mean supply vs demand. They have oversupplied. This is why I think they need a living reserved/throttle list. Cards should be elected into core, left there, and all others should have timers before reprinting.

I have not played Magic in many years, but now and then I pick up my folders, check what's missing, and order some singles to eventually complete the few sets that were around the time I played - Revised and Fourth, Ice Age, Homelands, Fallen Empires and Chronicles. Obviously not because they're massively valuable, desireable or good cards, it's pure nostalgia. I do also own more modern cards - but I have to say, just going by the artworks, I struggle to imagine what would someone entice to collect those. Half of them are hyper-detailed grimdark illustrations with pure black covering half the frame - I actually find it very hard to sort them because they look all the same to me. Again, maybe it's just not what I'm used to, but to me, the old art style is so much more easily recognizable - and iconic.

Here's an awesome story - about a year ago, I was talking with a buddy at work about MtG. A newer guy was listening and mentioned he used to play in the late 90s. He then told me he also used to collect and someone he knew had wanted to buy his collection about 10 years ago. Price? 5k. He didn't want to because he had put in time into his collection. He then told me what he had - complete sets Alpha-Tempest. He didn't believe me when I told him their value, but when he did some research that day/night, he was pretty happy.

Dude, you are so sad, ahaha... Sounds like you got hurt along the way or something. All I hear is "value... value... value... value... value...", but guess what, some of us actually like the cards (not their values)! I feel for your client/customer. He should have sold his collection to someone that would appreciate it more than you do... MTG is clearly a business to you now. So much so that you can't even conceive someone collecting cards just for passion. THAT is kinda sad to me.

@@autodestructive that is subjective. i never collected magic to "support myself financially if needed" as you put it. and i am pretty happy that more collectors can buy entire sets nowadays. why collecting magic has to be a privilege of the rich? you also talk about "value", "devaluation", "financial loss"... man, find a true investment if long-term profit is your goal. don't put your money in a cardboard game that is very niched. collecting magic nowadays is as much fun as it always was. it is not the game that changed, but your own (and rudy's) mindset that have changed. it is sad that the guy had to sell his collection, he shouldn't be relying on it for money though. and if i ever have to sell mine for whatever reason, i would sell to someone interested solely in the collection aspect of it, not to some greedy "investment-type" guy like rudy. collectors don't need rudy's pity, we are pretty happy as is. his condescending speech towards us is demeaning.

hey rudy, ive been watching your vids for about a year or so now, i dont comment often but this one made me open my mouth. i started playing a couple of weeks into SOI. i was so excited to play magic after moving on from yugioh ( the most toxic TCG ive ever played ) and went crazy buying boxes when i had a job at the time. after AER came out, id experienced three sets released and realised just how flexible the meta can be, and how many formats magic has. because of this, i decided to complete full playsets of each set from shadows over innistrad onwards. i have since then put together some of the older sets before it ( OGW, BFZ, KHANS BLOCK ETC ). i found that with doing this, amazing cards like tireless tracker, when it spikes, i can play these good cards in modern. it is expensive, but i love the idea of having a playset of every card printed. currently, only my shadows over innistrad is 100% complete, with just over 1100 cards in it, about 30% of it foiled out. i love the set and am doing somthing similar to foil out EMN aswell. im 3 lili and 2 emrakul off a complete set of eldritch moon. the satisfaction of seeing those full binders and being able to grab out any card i want in standard is the best feeling when net decking or brewing up stupid shit like mono blue mill xD. i just wanted to share just how much collecting like this means to me, as it has been how i have been playing and building up my collection for the past 2 years :)
