Yeah same lol. I remember in grade 9 I had played summer (travel football) and took like 3 weeks off to rest between high school and ended up puking up until the 10th practice lol.
@@ChanceMahony yeah, pediatrician made it up, my inhaler was actually just a toy. You can go symptom free the rest of your life. It happens all the time.
I grew up and played during those times when we had to make weight. Plenty of times we were in saunas with trash bags, running hills, and eating salads for the week to make weight. It sounds extreme now, but it taught discipline. Taught me how to push and stay focused on the goal. Tough times indeed, but also times of my life.
My Pop Warner team played those Redwood City 49ers back in the early 90s for the Regional Championship. We were used to demolishing other teams. We ended up getting smoked 48-0. Crazy good team for youth football.
i always wanted a coach like that i could do physical activity all day... my 7th grade year i was 5' tall weighed bout 90lbs but i was the fastest and most knowledgeable player out there! we went like 0-9 that season ... the coaches thought i was too small i only got to play db on 3rd and longs 😂... but by 8th grade i was starting at db and never looked back but i always had coaches who jus thought winning was jus gonna happen....in high school somehow we won our conference twice... we even won 1 playoff game my soph year
I was the fat boy o-line when I first played football soon after that after a thousand throw ups, and hell weeks later I soon became the build slim built big boy lol we definitely need this type of coaching in 2024
I was told when I went up the the scale about 13 years ago, they told me “ we could put bricks in you pockets and you would still weigh in good” I thought it was crazy that we had to be under and over a certain weight
I was overweight every fucking week I would have to sit in a suv with the heater on in the middle of august with a trash bag on for an hour before the game just to play…. And I loved every second!!!
We had a 110lb weight limit for any of the skilled positions. Between my 11-12yr old year I had a growth spurt of 14in so i was 5 11" 130lbs during the initial weigh in at the beginning of the season making me what they call a black striper. I did absolutely everything I could to lose the 20lbs. I ran before practice, after practice, I'd run home from school. Many times I was loaded up with sweat pants and shirts with trash bags underneath. It was ridiculous. I'm the same height now I couldn't imagine getting down to 110lbs.
Pop warner left New England about 7 years ago or so. We have American youth football now. But my two oldest sons played pop warner and I remember the older lighter/younger heavier rules. It kinda sucked for the fat kids. Because they would be in like “C”squad age but would have to go up and play on “A” squad. There’s a huge difference in the aggression and testosterone level between a 6th grader and a 8th grader. I like American youth football much better because the kids get to play football with their friends. Even a big kid or a tall kid is goofy and hasn’t grown into their bodies yet. So it evens out. But either way I love our game of football and am a proud football father for the last 20 years and three sons. Now I’m looking forward to my grandson playing in about seven years😁😁😁. His dad is 6’5” and my little boy is in the 99%tile and he’s only 9 months old! Proud grandpa here!!!
God I remember having to cut weight for a month before the final weigh in. Then I’d immediately gain the weight back and then some because the coach wanted his lineman big for the season. lol really healthy
Came in at 138 on weigh ins for the start of the season literally put that trash bag on and coach made me run around the building with a couple teammates so I could make weight in the next 30 minutes.. it was BRUTAL but I made weight for the game 😭😂
No honestly the try to make the kids quit, especially when you have over 30, is legit A+ strategy. You have to play these kids so the fewer the better.
I remember when I was 12 probably around 4-5th grade I had a coach that would do the same thing. I was a fat kid, and my coach 1 practice at the team meeting after practice. “Hey everyone did great today, I’m gonna get everyone a ice cream except “me” cause he’s a fat fuck” being Infront of everyone I laughed it off, but in reality almost made me cry. Then after we ended, he came up to me and said “you know why I said that” “I said cause you never made it to the nfl and you hate me” then he said “I know it’ll make you want to work harder and your already a great lineman but I want to push you to be better” then he bought me 2 ice creams and I quit the next year to play baseball lmao.
I was one of the heavy kids brought in told they couldn’t eat and made to run laps all practice wearing a trash bag under my pads until weigh ins after that get as big as I wanted 😅
I had a coach tell me to quit 8th grade football. I was so excited to play football. Dude ruined it for me. Told me I was too small and that he would never let me play. I never got over that. Edit: Then my dad yelled at me for being a "quitter."
My mother once gave me exlax for breakfast on a Friday before our Saturday playoff game. Needless to say I shit my pants all day at school in 5th grade. I made weight and we beat teddy Bridgewater and miami northwestern lol
Yeah, pound football was like that man ... starving guy dressed in a trash bag running suicides, then going to get weighed butt naked in front of an entire gymnasium full of people....I honestly have never thought about how crazy that sounds until just now lol, but we did that sh*t though man ... never was there a better feeling of absolutely SMASHING half a pizza and an order of French fries after making weight ... miss those days. Edit: I'm sure the wrestling guys know exactly what I'm talking about here too, I know they ran THE FOOOOOK outta those guys if they were heavy
That's why I didn't play pop warner and had to wait for middle school 😂at 12 I was 165 already and 5'9......still only 5'10 to this day unfortunately 💀💀
Dude I remember this as clear as day. I remember they gave me my jersey and they said you have to lose 12 pounds by next week or we’re taking it back 😂I straight up starved myself 😂😂
I coached youth football for 13 years all you need to do is win and the parents are happy now little league baseball parents are absolutely terrible. They all think their kids should be a pitcher shortstop for first base none of them should play The outfield.
I saw a video of a kid at practice was ran.and ran n denied water. He ran off searching for water. Tried to get into an office building. Collapsed n died
Likely Grant Brace, 20yo college wrestler w/ ADHD, who was prescribed Adderall, which increases sensitivity to dehydration. The family brought a wrongful death lawsuit, but settled w/ University of the Cumberlands for $14-Million w/o them admitting fault.
Had a coach like this. He wanted guys who wanted to win. If you quit it was the weak link leaving. Lost a few good players but they didn’t have it mentally to be on our team. Hard nose baseball is what he preached and it’s what we played.
