Flexible brick manipulation, robust customization options, reliable moving components, simple symmetry tools, size variability, user-friendly logic systems, The success of these features lies in their ability to enhance creativity and provide a seamless gameplay experience. The lack of KLANG would lessen the oh shiiii moments but having this kind of building customization is a breath of fresh air for the genre.

Those are some very impressive Star Citizen-alike ships. Frankly, the fact that the game lets you create ships even remotely as unique in design as some of the more complex Star Citizen ships is really, really impressive. Access ramps within access ramps, crazy cockpits. If this gets remotely good multiplayer net code, Space Engineers will finally have a serious fight on its hands!

Even a universe like empyrion that utilizes player built structures and ships developed into an interctive somewhat alive playfeild and this would game would deservedly blow SC out of the water.

@@edcrosbie4651lmao, not even the same game genre... besides, the scope of SC is far greater and is being developed as a life simulator MMO, whereas Empyrion is a builder and partial physics/space simulator. Very big difference

Yeah wow.... the detailing in the ships is insane. Some of those ships I feel should be in Star Citizen, especially that first dropship. It looked like an Anvil-style ship but designed for cargo and troops. Yeah, I know, there's the Anvil Valkyrie, but that ship looked slightly smaller and more compact to fly. Also, the C2 replica was really cool. Great use of the interior design spaces and really maximising the interior. Starship EVO is really coming along well and I can't wait to see what the developer does next.

@@tevarinvagabond1192 We're just talking about the ship builder aspect. No one's asking for a space life sim in a builder game. SC's ships are inspiringly detailed and beautiful. Who wouldn't wish for a game IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT GENRE that lets us indulge in our fantasies of designing our own fully custom ship on a level of detail superficially approaching SC's complexity of shapes? It's OK if ours are deliberately low-poly by design intent. We're doing it for a hobby without $500 million backing us. :P We just want a few more options than 45 degree and 60 degree block slopes in 2.5-meter increments, in a reasonably fluid user interface. Stevo is suggesting we can dream of it.

One thing you overlooked is that there is a menu opened with F1, by default there are only 4 scales available but that menu allows you to go from 1/8th meter scale all the way up to 32m scale which makes small details even better to make as well as massive structures even easier to build! Love seeing more exposure of the game and happy you focused on its building system in this video!

As someone who has worked on procedural generation with 3d models, I can attest that making those flexible hoses took a lot more work than people realize. I can tell the devs working on this game really care about it and want to make a really cool game. I hope they're able to see it to 1.0

as someone thats owned avorion for a long time but only recently just played it. i can tell you without a doubt a stretch feature and having 4 different scaled sizes of blocks is immensely beneficial to creativity. those ships look incredible and almost near identical to their replica versions from star citizen. space engineers could learn alot of the dev on starship evo. least iirc i think its a solo dev. either way this game shot up on my wishlist and cant wait to see more happening with the game in terms of survival and AI combat.. something akin to empyrion factions etc

It's even better, there's even more than 4 scales. By default they're hidden to not overwhelm newer players having to scroll through so many scale options. There is a menu opened with F1 that allows you to customize the available scales from 1/8th meter bricks to 32m scale. A couple of other helpful building options are in there too!

I mostly like features that make my ships look good but something I'd love that I never see is a feature that makes glass block seams dissappear when there connected to one another. For those coming from Space Engineers and wondering about Starship EVO, here's a summary of its comparative advantages: - Scaleable grids let you switch between small details like cockpits or greebles, to blocking out massive hull sections seamlessly; no loss of form control or detail on different build scales. - Stretchable pieces grant you greater control over form and shape, no longer limited to limited angles and corners. - Decal pieces let you make custom paintjobs or non-geometric details more easily - Clang-free mechanical components including rotors, hinges, pistons, and rails, letting you make moving parts ranging from access panels, to elevators, to transforming hull segments. - Customizable weapons for your ship and for your character, including the ability to make custom manned or automated turrets. - Very good optimization, with battles featuring multiple, large ships often having little noticeable impact on performance. - Flight model featuring a "Supercruise" that lets you fly around star systems, as well as a jump drive to travel between systems in a massive galaxy. - No parts or features locked behind a paywall. However, some may note the following comparative disadvantages: - Reduced emphasis on physics (for better or worse), plus no atmosphere, oxygen, or depressurization features. - Multiplayer is still very placeholder and unstable. - Crafting is still in development; survival, logistics, and power management aspects are currently threadbare. - Not many interesting places to visit while exploring besides space stations or procedurally generated planets. - Weapons currently only limited to two types: "blaster" style energy weapons and continuous beam lasers. No missiles or slug-throwers yet. - Logic system doesn't currently seem to support custom scripting. - Unfinished game by a solo dev. If updates change any of the above, it will be very slow. - More stylized art direction (some may prefer Space Engineers' more realistic look).

In the game Stormworks, there are many modular systems like engines, fluid manipulation, etc. Functional modular systems are my crack, I have spent many hours perfecting modular diesel setups and my reward is creations that barely consume fuel as they travel incredible distances. I LOVE those mechanics, which is why I got excited about Starbase back when it was announced. And when I saw those flexible hoses... I'll be honest, I'm high-key losing my composure. That's the kind of stuff I would love to see in other games, stretchable blocks or not. You lads have something quite brilliant on your hands, more modularity and we might have another Factorio situation on our hands.

I think what I'd really love to see is a wide range of roleplay based blocks. Medbay items such as biobeds, body scanners, surgical table. A full set of lab equipment. Engineering maintenance equipment and tools. Kitchen equipment. I know this is all quality of life stuff rather than essential, but it would help make ships look more real and lived in. Being able to retexture/recolour each face of a block independently would be of great help for detailing too. More long term, AI crew would be cool.

The thing that makes or breaks these games for me, is the interactions of the joints and rails, the movement mechanics. Few building games have have much past simple grid and subgrid movement mechanics, where as Starship EVO lets you get into super detail about how those mechanics interact with everything. Things dont float apart, blocks and mesh can slide against eachother without fear of physics going crazy, and everything works as expected. Previous versions of the game let you clip blocks on "sub grids" into the parent grids, making for some insane folding compact creations (think tiny cube that can unfold into a starship. Unfair kinda stuff in a ship game. Later versions were given a "self collision" mechanic, so things could stop on physical blocks. The lack of crazy physics and predictable mechanics makes these game great.

Would be neat to have an electrical wiring mechanic, so if certain modules go offline either due to combat damage, running out of fuel, or a fire on the deck, could divert power depending on how your electrical is setup. Could make redundant systems or backup or fuse boxes so if you get hit by an EMP weapon its a layer of protection through building and wiring that you thought of in advance

The ship-building system is the best one so far from what I saw on youtube! With how versatile each block is and the ability to use any scale block on any scale build it will allow one to build any ship you can think of just the way you imagined it! It's like building with Legos. Not to mention how detailed any replica ships you make can be imagine a Millennium Falcon recreated down to the last loose wire. And then once the multiplayer is properly implemented just imagine all those replicas fighting each other! Starship enterprise squaring off against Space battleship Yamato, Battlestar Galactica vs a Mon-cala cruiser with Vipers and X-wings dogfighting as the big ships hammer each other. Also, the roleplay potential that this game has imagine making a series about a Starfleet ship exploring the unknown using this game as a medium, or maybe making an ending to the og BSG. The way the building system works here can allow for such detailed set price locations it's crazy! All in all in my opinion the more detailed ship you can make, the more they can look as you imagined them the better the system and so far Starship Evo is the best! I can't wait for just what this game will become as it develops.

Blocks sharing the same space or block clipping, this is something that so many vehicle building games have in one way or another (usually starts as a glitch, finishes as a feature) and it always adds to the detail and complexity of vehicle designs: Scrapmechanic's glitch welding, Stormworks' XML editing, Trailmakers' piston glitch, Plane Crazy's motorlock, Besiege advanced building. Also rigid hinges, so many vehicle building games have hinge joints that are just too weak. Either they go floppy with too much weight or start flapping back and forth or just don't move. High torque motors and hinges always feel nice in games, and slow speed high torque hinges/pistons for industrial vehicles is really cool. Finally, something I have always wanted in near every vehicle building game ever; scalable wedges! I have always wanted to make that wedge whatever slope I want, but its always a small selection of just a few wedge lengths, but I am very happy that this game has scalable (I assume and hope to infinity) wedges.

Wouldn't bigger joints use a piston and leverage system instead of just hinges. Like hinges with a lot of weight on either end should be floppy and weak, they have no leverage.

Also being able to loopcut larger pieces into smaller ones if I find that I want to add additional detail to an area without deleting the whole thing that may have a whole bunch of detail work on top of it. I had issues with this in Avorion, certain changes were really difficult to make, and a lot of floating point nonsense causing things to never align unless you leaned on the "match block size" key, which wouldn't work as wanted if you're trying to fill in a gap of which the blocks that make up the sides of that gap go beyond it. kind of hard to describe

The building system looks great, and having reliably moving and sealing components will make things so much easier. My main concern is the level of skill required for the building. I've found games where there is only one grid size are very easy to pick up, but the more useful features you add, the more complicated it gets. Robocraft 2, which is in early access right now has a similar system with scaling blocks after the first click, and while it is nice to have much longer slopes, it takes so much longer to build anything, as placing a block takes 3 clicks instead of 1. If they can address this, and also add some other gameplay (like how space engineers has all the material gathering and survival aspects) then this may easily become the best sci-fi engineering game I've come across.

That does look really fun. I've been playing dual universe for the building and voxels but they lack alot of the pre-made ship parts.

I wish building games had is more material options and maybe the ability to craft new materials. And a skill tree or a tech that basically prevents you from just building very strong stuff early.

Theres one point he didn't mentioned, but theres more than four sizes of blocks, for unlock the other sizes from smaller ones to giant sized ones you need to open the f1 menu if i'm not mistaken and change the grid settings, the deafoult is for noobies don't get lost in the tutorial, but once you unlock the other sizes this game becomes insane!

I think the biggest thing I like about these games is procedural parts. Now I haven't played this game but it looks like how Juno new origins is to KSP. KSP has more parts and features on paper, but Juno allows for way more creative building and incredibly cool looking rockets at the cost of being more complex and harder to learn. KSP just has a part for most things you would want and they snap together, while Juno has only 30 or so parts but they are all scalable in a way that makes it fun to engineer and lets you do so many more things. It really looks good too, procedural cables and scalable parts are insanely nice for detailing and if this game had a bit more to it then I think it could rival something like SE. I personally like Juno new origins way a lot more than KSP when taking nostalgia out of the equation and I think this game has a lot of potential. this isn't the main thing but I also really love computers and logic systems taking up a consistent amount of space in crafts and having individual parts of them being destructible, it makes for a really fun challenge of trying to program with redundancy in mind, and it makes ship damage control way more fun to do in my opinion. I was really hoping automations would do a bit more of this in terms of size consistency and the number of blocks you need for ships with relatively complex behaviors. this isn't the main or secondary thing but multiplayer adds a lot to games like this, it makes combat and crashing and building a lot more fun and a lot less tedious or frustrating if you have other humans to worry about and collaborate with. this isn't the main, secondary, or tertiary thing and doesn't seem to be in this or SE but I really love having big physical torpedoes that don't respawn when fired, or having to make physical ammo magazines and belt feeders to guns.

The best feature to me? Stretchable blocks, by far. That would easily solve a lot of the scaling issues you see in games like Space Engineers when trying to build ships of different sizes. Building larger grids out of small blocks in SE is a hassle. Though the rail line for attaching elevators and such is probably a close second, or maybe the apparent lack of Klang. Though only being single player would help a lot with that.

You mention 4 scales of blocks - That's only the "default" options. The F1 menu opens up the build grid options, which enables many settings, including allowing a minimum of 1/8m scale and maximum of 32m scale. In total, there's 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 meter block sizes.

I don’t even try to make my creations look nice in games that are limited to square blocks, I like smooth and shallow angles so if I can’t make them it’s not fun Also this games block placement reminded me a lot of avorion which is high praise from me

I have played Space engineers, Starbase, and Avorion. In Space engineres you can make good ships that look alright, but they are limited in the possible level of detail. In Starbase, you can make really cool looking ships, but the building system is very strict and discourages you from making large ships with interiors as they are objectivley worse. Avorion has a very similar building system to Starship Evo, but starship evo is first person whereas there is no use to make interiors in avorion, nor are you really able to. Starship Evo i think is the first game thats in position to allow players to make any ship they want look however they want without inherently sacrificing their performance. I think this is the first game of this genre that will allow people to recreate ships from their favorite franchises in a level of detail that would make someone second guess weather they are playing a game or watching a show/movie.

One thing I've been wanting to incorperate into my designs are the various folding techniques that have been deployed in real space craft and deployable structure. From solar arrays that fold out several times wider while stationary and tuck away while moving too whole buildings that can fold up and fit into a ship smaller than the unfolded state.

I can't wait to see what the survival part of this game will become. Based on the level of detail that exists in ship building already, I'm sure they will come up with an incredible material collecting and building system for survival.

Something that I've wanted for a really long time is structural integrity for ships and stations in SE. Like they had on Medival Engineers that way ships collapse when weakened, it would also depend on the gravity of the planet. You can have skinny lanky ships for space and moons but they break under their own weight on planets. ETC
@ledfootfam99
@ledfootfam99 11 месяцев назад
I think what makes or breaks is programming, hear me out. Seems like they got the physical engineering down but a big part of why space engineers is so successful is the ability to program "core" blocks to work with others in order to create something entirely different. Having blocks and settings that are the same but depending on how you set them up it could be a robotic arm, or a self aiming rail gun, or a mech, or a automated factory. What I'm saying is SE blocks are simple but very multipurpose and the program/settings allow much greater things, the thought put into making sure they all can work together to make your dreams a reality is why it's so good. If this game gets it I'm 100% on board, in a world of control, boundaries, and linear story, freedom is a great selling point. I hope I will get to try it! I would really appreciate a key lol I honestly don't have alot of money and have been very excited about this game. Thanks for the video, those ships remind me of that Hammehead Ship that's been showcased recently.

While Space Engineers may not be able to do this scalable build system there is one thing SE can do to have a better build experience: Add a build view (similar to that in Stormworks). A build view would allow you to work on blueprints from within the game. Features for a build view could include cut sections and symmetry. The big new feature in build view could be to have 3D shape tools/plane tools. Eg you can draw a complex shape like a curve, tweak the shape and when ready get SE to populate the shape with blocks that best fit the shape. You can choose a solid fill or hollow fill etc .

This game is like the smaller, more individual scale version of Avorion. I loved how each building piece could be stretched and manipulated to any scale to build some absolutely AMAZING designs far exceeding anything else. But whereas Avorion focuses on the macro scale with pure shipbuilding and no moving parts and no crew besides menu numbers, this game fills the opposite side. Smaller scale ships that can be fully walked through and explored, moving parts with stability and a high degree of versatility. Starship Evo is like the opposite side of the same coin to Avorion. A superb addition to custom space building games.

The versatility of blocks determine how detailed a vehicle can be. In SE its limited to either large grid, small grid, or the use of sub-grids using both. Here we can see what we wished SE to be with no issues with sub-grids and a much larger assortment of every expansive blocks.

The Dropship being the: Anvil VALKYRIE The Cargo ship being: Crusader C2 Hercules The Ship that wasn't shown looked like the: Ageis Hammerhead Bit more of a stretch for these The bendy hose fighter: Vanduul Glaive The other fighter looking to be after a: Aegis Gladius Still pretty cool to see them, but instantly recognized them
