No way with pads you add weight and increase the area you hit. The pads only help you hit harder. These guys were probably good, I think most were probably ex college players or good high school players.

The psychology behind this is actually pretty solid. By removing helmets and pads players are actually more conscious of how they tackle and how they expose their bodies to hits. When a player tackles with equipment on they are more inclined to lead more forceful hits with protected parts of their body--i.e. Head. Remove these things and the mind tells the body to basically tackle safer to some degree. Granted its still a lot of trauma to the body, but its definitely less than what full padded players are experiencing.
