Back when demi-gods used to create music and play instruments, there dwelt the immortal Led Zeppelin. These dynamic British invaders played the blues, rock, folk, and pioneered proto metal. The Mighty Mighty Led Zeppelin still holds its own 50 years on and even my kids love them. Zep holds memories for me of the angst of high school, wild parties, first loves, and heartbreaks. "Thank You" was my wedding song. "Achilles Last Stand" and "In My Time of Dying" will play at my funeral. I am forever tied to Led Zeppelin.

I saw a lot of greats. Never this band. I'm only 57 and when I was teen I used to catch a Greyhound bus round trip to Pittsburgh to the Civic Arena to see concerts. Cost was like 7.50 round trip. Saw Alice Cooper do Billion dollar Babies there. Also Deep Purple!!! yea..I'm one of not many who saw that. All of this was in the mid 70's. I saw a lot more than that. Not enough room type them all.

Terry Dunn I was a child of the 70s too. It wasn't always great. Many times I was too young, many other times I was too old, but Led Zeppelin was my very first concert. I only saw them once, but it was enough. I was 14 years old and had told my parents that I was going to the library. When the stage lights came up and the band was there, I felt like I'd died and gone to Rock Heaven. Watching Robert Plant in his jeans so tight and so low was the first time I felt, well, I don't think I need to explain it. When Jimmy pursed his lips while playing his power cords, it was just so adorable, although that doesn't sound right. Bonham with his epic drum solos was like nothing I'd ever seen or heard before or since. Only Jason comes close to his dad's epicness. Every Zep fan needs to watch "Kennedy Center Honors Led Zeppelin." Although not one member of Zep actually performs, it is the awesomest of awesome. When I first heard about it I was so annoyed - actually, pissed right off - that anyone else in the world would sing and play Zep songs. It was sacrilegious. How DARE they!?! I had no idea that anyone else was good enough to play at being Led Zeppelin. But by the time they started playing Stairway to Heaven I knew that I had been terribly wrong. It should be required watching and listening for all Zep fans. This probably sounds stupid and cliché, but that concert when I was 14 shaped my life. I honestly believe I wouldn't be the person I am today had I not gone to the "library" that night.

I listened to this song before missions in the sand. We were a small group and we knew what we signed up for. We were programmed in ways no one should have been. I can't speak for my Brothers, but I personally gave no quarter, but I didn't ask for no quarter towards me either and if I paid for my actions then so be it. I feel it took fear of death out of my equation thus I had no hesitation, no worries and nothing to lose demeanor. It's like the old saying, the most dangerous person in a fight is the one who has nothing to lose. Only regret I have is survival guilt because some of my Brothers weren't able to come home. From my kids, to my nephews etc I've talked more out of joining the military then signing up. They don't have the mindset to do it especially, what I specialized in. Caspers are only friendly to their allies. No mercy was brought upon to my targets. Just a shirt, without a face.

They were JRR Tolkien fans this song is from The Lord Of The Rings where the Fellowship tried to cross the mountain pass and ended up in the Mines Of Moria. Eventually fighting their way out and losing Gandalf to the Fire Beast (Devil). "You Cannot Pass!" I'm blown away that I loved Led Zeppelin in the 70's, read the books in the 80's and lived long enough to just watch all the movies and the last one "The Hobbit: Battle Of The Five Armies" Last Night. AWESOME!

+Jack Tuohey Let me remind they never unfortunately stated weather or not that was true, almost every thing you hear about this songs meaning is up for speculation. I personally believe its a about a teutonic knight returning from the crusades. But the LOTR theory is also a pretty sound theory as they all did openly admit to loving LOTR as young kids
@jack2e
@jack2e 8 лет назад
Clayton, that's an interesting theory as well due to our schooling backgrounds. Taking into consideration the time frames of when the LOTR was written ('50's) and the song recorded (late '60's). As well as, other tunes implying the bands like for JRR Tolkien (Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, etc...,) I'm leaning more towards LOTR than The Crusades. Although I acknowledge and respect your opinion.
@claytonhayward3222
@claytonhayward3222 8 лет назад
I can 110% see where you get that. I feel as if maybe I think Misty Mountain Hop actually has a clear cut message that they acknowledged but I'm not sure. And I will admit there mystical sound does match LOTR so so well

If you buy that war can be civil.... No Quarter either is a reference to ancient mythos and rivers and death (norse, ergo Thor) but likely also referencing (the pages of our history that just make no sense to me) the Revolutionary War when Great Britain enforced a policy *REQUIRING* colonial Americans to house British soldiers and offer them food and a bed during the cold of winter. If this policy was refused to a British soldier, IT WAS PUNISHABLE BY EVEN DEATH! If you buy it, we pretend other people are our enemies now....because we all speak the same language and can just call each other... ...anywho, notice the dogs and war references by Plant (here) and Pink Floyd around this same time. I find the ending lyrics especially interesting.

Self-disclosure time. When I first heard this song, well when I was with someone who knew more about Led than me, I was like 15-16, I asked him, what does no quarter mean? In short, he answered, it means wanting nothing back ( for a deed done). I was like oh. And, as I continued enjoying the California Sensimilla, I was determined to find out (research) for myself as to the meaning of their song and keep learning and listening to their music. Only the smoking has ceased and every once in a while, I soothe the craving in my souk for some Led. Thank you for all the other comments and also I am grateful that I am able to share mine too. About those who are not afraid to think with their own head, so: ”They choose the path where no one goes” [...] ”Walking side by side with death”; those who are not afraid of the truth which must feed our evolution (”They carry news that must get through”) - those who are a source of inspiration for the other humans (”To build a dream for me and you”)...

Zeppelin enjoyed Nordic symbolism. "The winds of THOR are blowing cold" is significant. Ordinarily one might evoke Ullr or Hella for cold wind; but no - Thor. Maybe this suggests a noble, striving, spirit losing energy as time goes on?

I'm a professional audio engineer and to be honest with you even in the studio back then sound effects were very limited. There was only reverb and you had to over lay it to create a delay effect. I think the first digital delay and reverb wasn't even invented until the mid to late 70's and that unit only delayed as long as 1/4 second. They did a great job with what they had. In those days the recording engineer and the travelling house engineer were extremely important to the bands sound. They still are but there is a lot of talent out there today. It's not like you can't replace a persons talents today.

+ac bc aligator Hardly any doubt it being about Soldier(s) of much Righteousness. I can hardly overlook one who truly dragged their pained foot through snow with little to No Quarter as he (Joseph) further advanced onto life-time achievements that included his Building via The Restoration of a multi-faceted "The Dream" (Eternal Marriage interestingly found in God's Holy Temples maybe? no less irony as to title of the Album being "House of the Holy") for Me & You (being Men & Women makings towards Forever Families). As follows a partial excerpt from a No Quarter situation of a soldier in a pre-teenagers damaged body not fully healed being forced to limp “through the snow 40 miles per day for several days,” experiencing what he called “the most excruciating weariness & pain.” As to a Path where no one goes ... overlook not reading further in terms of The Path to Palmyra and beyond 2!!: www.lds.org/ensign/2015/06/the-path-to-palmyra?lang=eng

+jou1900 Seemingly you are No Less likely Much Correct in terms of "this song is about anyone close of the death". As one might even further investigate this notion of even soldiers of much righteousness being granted little to NO QUARTER ... even as to having a mark of death issued upon them, I am rather Poignantly reminded by your post jou1900 of maybe? the only official Extermination Order issued by that of an American of the United States being a Governor from yet another sovereign state being that of Missouri back in 1838 by Gov. Lilburn Boggs. This NO QUARTER Extermination order of his specifically targeted the same exact Christian religious group that I made note in my initial comments just above. Interestingly enough (IMhO) the USA was in large part established for those who desired to exercise their inalienable Freedoms including that of the freedom of practicing one's religion too. So how ironic might I ask that in terms of this songs title/theme here of NO QUARTER ... How Outlandish was that a Governor of the USA (Lilburn Boggs) issued an extermination edict within the boarders of the Land of the USA founded much upon religious freedoms? Thankfully this near as to the ultimate NO QUARTER executive order that much flew in the face of the Bill of Rights/US Constitution ... Thankfully even this quite preposterous mark of death/edict (IMO aka/akin to NO QUARTER) was Finally rescinded eventually .......... more than a century later in 1976! Further verification of these historical facts can be further found at: eom.byu.edu/index.php/Extermination_Order

+ac bc aligator It supposedly and most likely about a teutonic knight coming home from the crusades and feeling guilty for what he did. I don't believe the lyrical bit, "The snow drives back the foot thats slow." is literally refering to snow but instead the mental ice that they would recieves in the state of guilt. And snow falling hard is refering to knight being so depressed and angry thats its like hes constantly being blanketed by his problems. The winds of Thor are blowing cold could be refering to the no mercy that knights would have shown. The dogs section could refer to the screams of the dying and so on the lyrics could be deciphered. But I honestly believe this is about a knight. But its all speculation

To those who think Zeppelin isn't metal, I offer the following counterexamples to your wrong conjecture: Exhibit A: This song Exhibit B: When The Levee Breaks Also, I guess Exhibit C: Achilles' Last Stand Now - I will say that Zeppelin is NOT ALWAYS metal - clearly, they have other examples of songs that are not in a metal style - but in the end, they have the latter songs in their catalog that make their metallic impact on their legacy and influence.... That's all I have for now. Feel free to let me know what you think... Cheers
