Just a short video showing one of my methods for connecting batteries to an inverter, safely without sparks if you don't have a proper resistor on hand. All you need is a carpenters pencil! Sharpen both ends. Graphite is a conducting material and you can use to pre charge your inverter spark free. This is only really suitable for 12V systems, it's always best to use a resistor.

This sir worked perfectly Hats off to u Used a standard hb pencil between a 460ah battery and a 3000w inverter Not a spark and it didn't trip the battery safety features Cheers

That’s the fist time I’ve ever seen the use of a pencil..or read about the use of a multimeter to both pre charge capacitors, and I’ve watched many videos on how to connect inverters safely with and without resisters. I’m grateful for your input on this subject, simple and to the point. Very surprised no other references to these methods are available. Thank you. 👍

Thanks for watching and taking time to comment its appreciated. I've only done this with 12v systems but don't see why it won't work on 24v etc

I've recently bought a secondhand 3000 watt 12v inverter, not used it yet, was waiting for a circuit breaker and appropriate battery leads (just arrived today!) This video has saved me, from the panic that a huge spark might have caused! lol. Thanks for the useful info :)

Thank you for this.. I have a challenge though. I tried connecting my new 120ah battery to my 1000 watts inverter yesterday. There was a great spark which caused something to burn in my inverter. I never experienced this for over three years using same inverter with my 40ah battery. I'm so interested to know what actually went wrong so I dont repeat same mistake another day. I also want to know what component to fix in inverter cause I tried connecting with my old 40ah batter and it turned on to my greatest surprise.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Your inverter uses capacitors which store energy to allow for surges in supply. As such it is very important to pre charge the inverter either using a resistor or as shown a pencil. The pencil simply allows electrons to flow at a steady rate into the capacitors and you have to allow time for the process to complete. Ie it does what a resistor does. Almost all Inverters have internal Fuses which are replacable and hopefully yours is no different. Check the user manual to see where they are located. Also make sure the inverter is switched off before pre charging.

how about a 12volt light bulb, and get some feedback on the pre-charge process
@4cpus4me
@4cpus4me 8 месяцев назад
Yes, that will work. As the capacitor charges the light bulb will dim and finally go out when the capacitor is fully-charged. The light bulb voltage rating needs to match your inverter input voltage, of course.

Someone explain me what is the principal behind this using a pencil❤❤

Graphite as used in pencils ✏ is a conducting element. It allows electrons to move freely and is a common non metal that can conduct electricity. The natural resistance means you can pre charge an inverters capacitors slower and spark free as opposed to simply placing a battery cable terminal with less resistance which will cause a spark.

How do you do that with multimetr ?

Hi, place the meter in battery 9v place one lead to battery positive lead the negative on positive inverter terminal. You'll see the reading change. Only needs a few seconds. Hope this helps.

Using a pencil to bridge the gap between an inverter and its power lead to pre-charge the capacitors and prevent sparks is not a recommended or safe practice. This method could pose significant risks, including the potential for short circuits, fire, damage to the inverter, and personal injury. Why it's not recommended: Material Conductivity: Pencils are not designed for electrical use. The graphite in a pencil does conduct electricity, but its conductivity is not stable or predictable compared to materials designed for electrical applications. This can lead to uneven and potentially dangerous current flow. Risk of Damage: Bridging electrical connections with a pencil can damage both the graphite and the electrical components. This could lead to broken graphite leads inside the device, which could cause short circuits. Safety Hazards: Introducing foreign objects into electrical circuits can lead to sparks, electrical shorts, or fires. It's crucial to use tools and methods that are safe and designed for handling electrical systems.

I totally agree with what your pointing out, but as an alternative I actually found this effective for my own purposes. Naturally it's better to use a suitable resistor.

@crpth1

Incorrect! The spark is the result of quick power surge to the uncharged caps. It will happen as soon as the circuit is closed! Be it from the positive or the negative side. ;-) Meaning the huge amount of current will flow anyway! The only way to reduce this is by having the caps pre-charged (power source). Or control the current flow, to much lower levels (resistor). Hope it helps. ;-)
