overall decent review, I would disagree though at that everything else was awful, I thought there were many funny non fighting scenes, also the swimming pool scene with all the girls was pretty hot and at the same time incredibly aggravating seeing Jason our main man getting tossed around like that, not to mention ruining his relationship for a bit, nonetheless I thought your points were spot on with the fighting, I enjoy the crap out of the final fighting scenes, I think I watched it maybe 10 or 15 times in the past few months, its an incredible film though, also I wish we got more time with the original sensei like in the beginning of the film, his taijutsu is badass!
No retreat no surrender was filmed in october and november 1984. Planning and stuff was even much earlier. The initial idea came up at least one year before filming. Since Karate Kid was released in June 84 it's likely just a coincidence the two movies center around the same core idea. Maybe Karate Kid was the reason for the late release of NRNS but I haven't found proof for that.
I don't know where you got racism from. And showing a fat guy eating lots of junk food isn't really stereo typing either. That's literally how people get fat. The acting is full on vintage porno level but for me it's so bad it's actually good. The dad is the best worst actor I've ever seen.
I still love this movie to this day despite all the terrible acting haha but the atmosphere and plot I really loved that and also the motivation factor and music was really good
I loved this movie as a kid in the 80's. It definitely wasn't for the acting. As a Bruce Lee fan, I think I was just wishing Bruce would come back from the dead and train me. Cool childhood fantasy. Great review m8.
In a bar scene you'll see the level of beer in a glass change 4 times in 45 seconds... that tells you everything you need to know about this film. :) :) :)
I grew up with this one and still watch it often for its comedic value. The US vhs version is quite different from the UK version that was released on dvd. You probably already know that. Even though the character of Scott is obnoxious and a shit-starter, I never really believed he was a racist. His whole reason for hating R.J. was explained away with “I’ve got my reasons.” I believe there was a scen (that was either never shot or it got cut) where R.J. had humiliated Scott at school. Also found it funny that the day after he gets his ass kicked at the burger joint, he’s seen at the dojo sporting a white belt which implies he just enrolled. I realize I’m really over-scrutinizing this movie. Lol. Great review, man.
I'm gonna have to have a Van Damme-A-Thon and a closer look. It's not something I noticed but I'll bet you're spot on. Like you were saying, I too watched them so many times growing up that surely they exist in a slightly more elevated state in my mind than they would appear to someone watching for the first time nowadays. Excellent work all around man! ✊😁
Having RJ as a kind of Michael jackson character, how is that racist? Come on man, don't judge by today's hyper sensitive, woke standards. It's not even clear the fat guy is racist, you might assume that but maybe he just doesn't like the black guy, does't mean it's racism. Plus the director is from Hong Kong, his style is very similar to the golden harvest Bruce Lee films as is the characterization. Ah, the fat guy doesn't like Jason either from the off for some silly reasons but hey.....
OH NO! I’m losing a viewer for being socially aware of the harmfulness of racism on the psyche of society and its effects on the hegemonic structures of day to day life in America! Whatever is this SJW to do? What is this 2016? Who says SJW anymore?
