You're right. Without a smartphone you're living your life and not have a piece of tech living it for you.

I randomly yesterday just started thinking how much I use my phone, I’m 15, and well on my free time I’m usually on TikTok or other apps all the time.. and I think you have convinced me to just buy a cellphone so I can eat least make calls and texts and just use that on my daily basis! Thank you!

If it wasn't for my bank being app only and my bus being a lot cheaper on the app,I'd probably give this a go. The trouble is now , with most things moving to digital, it's difficult to ditch. It is a shame because it means that some older people and people not comfortable with the technology get left behind.

You should try installing a dumb phone launcher and disable or uninstall apps you don't want to waste time on. If you want to go the extra step, set your screen to grey scale. That's what I'm doing. I want my camera and Google maps or I would ditch my smartphone for a flip phone

You describe exactly how I feel about 'smart'phones. I 'need' one for banking and when we go on a trip with our camper to find good parking spots. But my everyday phone is an oldskool flip phone. When I'm out I normally leave it at home. I keep in contact with parents, kids with this phone. I dont need (a)social media apps or games to live my life. I choose REAL life! 🙂 For navigation in the car I use a TomTom device. Glad to see there are more people trying to live a normal life with real friends and real communication. I hope more and more people ditch their 'smart'phones and go back to living in the here and now and not living in a fantasy world in their screens.

Love this Anitha!! So inspired by you not owning a smart phone for 4 years. One of my intentions for this year is to be more conscious of my phone usage.. im doing my best to be intentional with how i use it. I feel eo much better already spending less time behind the screens. I looked at my phone usage times the other day and it scared me how much time ive been wasting behind the screen. I havent had facebook in 3 years plus and it feels amazing! Ive learnt that the people who want to stay in touch with you will make the effort to do so :) id love to to back to those times when we didnt have smart phones and social media.

im a young teen, and lately i've been noticing how i really am adicted to phone and social media (time limit isnt helping). i started watching bunch of videos where people share their experience of using a dumb phone, and i've got a desire to get myself one too. i bought yesterday a working dumbphone from thrift store for 6 dollars. im scared to tell my parents about it, and my desire to cut off that kind of "addiction". some of my friends know that somewhen i'll do it. i trully have this desire to stop using smartphone. but im not really ready for it. (ill make an update in spring or summer) autumn update: so i was using the bummer phone for quite alot, but it started powering off randomly, especially when you do calls. so im on my usual phone again, which is really bad because i feel like im really addictive to this piece of metal. that's why i decided to start saving up money for a new dumb phone. also if anyone's wondering, yes you can separate things - music player, camera, notebook etc. and I don't know why but it makes me feel disappointed in people on streets when i see group of friends walking and just be in their phones, like, "you can do this at home? enjoy nature now" :/

@@verad9917 oh i forgot, an update: i did this experiment when spring holidays came. the experiment lasted for a week. it was actually cool and calm. but I didn't saw the point of continuing the experiment bc i was just sitting at house using my laptop to chat with friends, so that didn't kinda really help me get away from social medias. but i want to restart this experiment in the summer, im def ready for it. and NOBODY was judging me for my choice to use dumbphone, lol, this made me feel better.

@@verad9917 hey I feel the same way sometimes, my family is actually really judgmental abt it they tell me to just “be normal” but if normal is staring at a screen for 5-8 hours a day then I’m okay with being insane 😭 at the end of the day we only have one life to live and all of that time wasted on our screens isn’t healthy or productive. I just ordered my flip phone today so I’m really excited to experience life offline and not be connected 24/7

I deleted all social medias from my smartphone and it does the trick. I still have the google maps and Whatsapp for new routes and connecting with family. I only open RU-vid and other social medias when I'm on my personal laptop, which isn't used that much. but I don't really have a life that is full to the brim, I spend most of the days reading to be honest or cooking.

@@dsrtsnwit was a great time. Would love to go back in time. I am addicted to my iPhone and I’m trying to cut down. The extremely scary thing though, is the fact that I’ve been addicted to iPhone since 2014. Thats 10 years and it was only videos like this, that made me even realise that I have a problem. For years, I’ve just been happy getting those hits of instant dopamine and because it’s not like hard drugs that destroy you, I didn’t even realise I had a problem. Just trying to watch 1 of my very few fav shows is extremely difficult now days because I can not concentrate and always grab my phone. I’m working on it. Saying that , I just got my first new iPhone 14 and I’ve not even unboxed it yet.😂😂😂 In my defence, apart from the sexy look and colour, I’m really not excited for a new phone. It does the same things this iPhone 7 does, just a bit better. If this phones battery wasn’t f’ed , I’d happily stick with this old fucker. Oh but what is it with couples and friends that in same room but both on their phones? That’s naughty and I don’t even reach for my phone then.

i think i’m really kinda jealous that people live without smartphones in our time. recently i got an ipod to listen to music so i don’t have to take my phone with me for that anymore. it already feels soooo free! i know i’m addicted but it feels so free when the battery is empty when i’m somewhere and i’m just free idk, or when the phone is at home but like turned off. it feels bad when it’s turned on but somewhere. haha it’s addiction idk and i ordered a little dumb phone and i’m considering using it to go somewhere sometimes to like test my ability to get somewhere without it, without train tracker etc. it’s so adventurous again haha ! and then i can call or send sms if i need to but i’m not like lost in the existential sauce of internet, but in the existential sauce of the moment. and it makes me emotional bc it feels so free, like when i was a kid without a smartphone… :( it’s so crazy how many people are addicted and do not consider to change something about it.. we are wasting our time energy focus life :( thanks for sharing anitha 🧡🧡 it’s sooo important

I still have a smartphone because i think the upsides for the modern worldare worth it, but although i still have the accounts active i left social media about 6? years ago besides youtube (some say it counts as social media others don´t), so i´m out of the loop quite a bit but people like to talk so sooner or later i end up knowing, its true that if you are not glued to your phone people will strike conversation with you especially old people they will tell you almost their entired life story in 5 minutes.

Here is this google map sentiment again, every video i’ve seen of basic phone users say they use paper maps and write down directions, I don’t get it! I’m thinking about switching to a basic phone but I’m not giving up the GPS, i’m going to buy one for the car. To me getting rid of the phone is more about getting back into life and away from social media, not giving up modern convenience. Have you ever thought about buying a GPS yourself? I can’t believe no one else seems to use one

I haven't had a smartphone for 7 months because i gave it to my brother. At first it was so hard especially when I'm at school (i'm a college student btw) and I need to access some files but I couldn't because I don't have a smartphone. It was also hard when I'm at school and I need to know where my friends were and I can't message them. It was a bit scary. But as time goes by, I became used to not having a smartphone, I used my laptop as an alternative esp for messaging, searching things up and just to access files I need for school (but I can only do those things when I'm at home because I don't bring a laptop with me at school). When I'm at school, I was more present during the lectures and when I'm with my friends. I actually talked to my classmates more and I became more active and participated more during class. Having no smartphone actually helped me become more better. And true to what she said, I was more creative now that I don't have a smartphone. I did lots of stuff that I only wished to do when I had a smartphone. It was so worth it to gave it up.

Amazing how young people do a lot to 1. Get addicted to a smartphone and social media. And 2. Realise that life without is different but maybe better. They do a lot to actually live like we did in the 70s and 80s. Surely not everything was better in the old days but this? Yes this was definitely better. More interaction. More aware of the surroundings. The young knew how to talk to people. Now they don't. The young learned how to write. They had to. Now? Much less. Social skills are going down the drain.
