The people of Koidu, once Sierra Leone's "blood diamond" mining capital, are awaiting former Liberian president Charles Taylor's sentencing at a UN-backed court. The gems mined there are now free from the taint of conflict but their dwindling supply has brought mixed blessings. Duration: 02:36

Thank you for your response. You've brought up some really good points that I didn't even consider. Do you frequent Sierra Leone? When I posted that originally, I had a feeling that money wasn't being used properly for the good of the people. This only further supports my assumption. I don't want to pretend like I know the situation or even comprehend it. I can say is that it still makes me sad, and its way too dangerous to volunteer. My buddy recently lost a finger in a bar fight in Africa.

The 1% (actually closer to .75%) comes from the total value of Diamond's exported from Sierra Leone. This money is placed into the Diamond Area Community Development Funds which communities can draw from for various development projects (roads, schools, etc). The problem seems to be corruption within the various chiefdoms and a lack of accountibility mechanisms across the board. Combined with the fact that a significant % of diamonds are still smuggled out, it's effectively useless.

I was hoping to find a way where, I or maybe "we" can help out Sierra Leone. Donating money is great but I'll never know who gets the money at the end. I've heard that Sierra Leone is still pretty dangerous. Making it tough to do a volunteer visit. BTW, 1% of Tiffany's Annual Earnings for 2012 would be 36Million dollars. If they are actually sending that to Sierra Leone that would be amazing. But I know this world is a dark place sometimes. I hope they keep their word.
