No Stickdrift enough!? GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro Controller Review

All controllers use the same mass produced potentiometer thumbstick modules that WILL get stick drift eventually. Controllers like the Astro C40 and Thrustmaster Eswap allow to swap the modules but what if I told you there was a controller that would NEVER get stick drift because it used magnetic hall effect sensors rather than the same design we have been using for 30 years. Unfortunately it only works on Switch, PC, and mobile, and there is trouble in paradise.

Doing God's work here man, I'm going to update mine when I have time. Had this controller for close to half a year now and it's easily my favourite one, even though I had some bugs which seem to have been patched via updates. They release updates quite often, it's good to see that it's in active development, kinda makes you feel safer about the company. The people there clearly aim for long term success and not just releasing some one time products with flashy slogans just to make quick buck.

One thing you missed is that the sticks tops pop off like an Elite controller (but with friction clips rather than magnets) and they sell taller versions. The "weird way to press bumpers" you described is actually how I normally press them, so I'm very pleased you brought that up. I hold standard controllers a bit different than most others and it results in my index fingers pressing those deep points on the shoulder buttons. That issue is also present on the Xbox One controller and is a big reason why I don't care for the those controllers just as much. When I saw this controller used an Xbox mold, I was hoping it wouldn't be an issue here. Bit of a shame there.

Thanks for doing this review. Picked one up because of it. The switches on the ABXY buttons are definitely mechanical -- the bump you feel on them that simulate a standard squishy membrane is the same feel as a cherry brown switch on a keyboard -- not a bad thing if you know what you're dealing with. I gather that if you disassemble the switch and rotate or trim the nubs off the interior of the base it will make the switch feel like a cherry red linear switch. I don't mind browns so overall very pleased.

@bronzeagehuman
@bronzeagehuman Год назад
It's used in plenty of industrial applications from what I understand. There is just no point in a reliable build for consumer products from their POV. In their defense, controllers have so many moving parts that it's fairly likely for something to show fatigue before the joystick potentiometers start to drift. Even Gulikit would need to have insanely tight tolerances (which they don't have) for the rest of the controller to not be an insult to their hall effect sensors.
@SkinnyBlackout
@SkinnyBlackout Год назад
@@bronzeagehuman You're flat out incorrect about joystick pots. I play some stick intensive games such as Destiny 2 and I killed a crap load of pots on my gamepads in a matter of months. If you play games a lot chances are the stick will be the absolutely first thing that gives, not even mentioning that a lot of gamepads come with factory drift because they weren't calibrated correctly (it applies to OEM gamepads such as Dualsense/XBone pads as well, unfortunately). Stick drift is the reason why I got myself King Kong 2 Pro (fucking abysmal name, I know) months ago and it's been a blast so far.
@bronzeagehuman
@bronzeagehuman Год назад
@@SkinnyBlackout You could be right about pots being statistically first to fail. My point is that nobody would be surprised if literally anything were to show problems early because controllers use cheap components with low manufacturing tolerances across the board. Everything is likely to break or arrive broken, and pots make sense in that paradigm.

switch mode also has very good circularity. you most likely had it in high sensitivity mode, which ruins circularity. it seems to double the travel internally so when your stick is half way to the edge, it gets registered as touching the edge (or beyond edge in case of corners). and if that wasnt the case i am certain they fixed it in firmware. i have the newest firmware and tested switch mode, which shows an avg error of 0,5%

I just got the "Raven Purple" Zen Pro, brand new on ebay, for 50 bucks out the door. Charged it up and I've been using it all weekend via bluetooth. Now it's Monday and it's still going strong without having to charge it yet. My PS5 controller is only good for about 2 hours on a charge. Out of the box mine has ZERO issues or defects. I love this thing! It's frickin' amazing. Best controller on this planet! (IMO). Thanks All! 😎

I had to return one of these due to a problem with the sticks catching on something internally, but I was sent a replacement for free that did not have this problem and the sticks feel great. The current one that I have does seem to have a slight problem with the a/b buttons feeling a bit stuck on the bounce back up. The caps on those buttons are longer than the X/Y buttons, and seem to catch a bit on the inside. Luckily, this does seem to be completely fixable without having to open up the controller. I was able to pull the caps up with a keyboard switch puller, and I applied a bit of keyboard switch lube to the caps and the controller itself, and that seems to have pretty much fix it. I plan on opening it up at some point and fully lubing the inside of the switches themselves, which I am certain will improve the feeling even more. I just wish Gulikit would factory lube these switches. It shouldn't be on the customer to get their buttons to feel acceptable. It's definitely my favorite controller so far, even with its flaws. I don't want to have rear buttons, and the Dpad is shockingly good to me even for retro games that I'd normally want the Dpad in the main spot for. This controller is an easy recommend for anyone who isn't scared of opening a controller up to tinker with, but a bit harder to recommend to people who do not want to do that, or are a bit scared to. 8BitDo is releasing a controller in October that uses Gulikit's sticks, so it might be worth waiting for their controller. 8BitDo has a bit better manufacturing quality from what I've seen.

@NessByte Longplays it's OK. Enough to barely keep me on controller. My biggest issue is the aiming resolution is somewhat low, you feel the skips in aim speed especially in small micro adjustments. Definitely no drift even after months. You can calibrate the deadzone to be supper small which is nice, but at the same time it feels a little less stable in the center. I can play with smaller deadzones on controllers that have deadzone drift calibration on normal analogs.

I have more than 1.5 k hours on my king kong pro (this controller) and mainly on Rocket League, if you don't drop, smack, or hit your king kong pro, it will last you a very long time! Positive: Analog sticks accuracy is still -0.000002 (around -0.01000 in no Deadzone) A,B,X,Y works perfectly! Bumpers are still CLICKY Batteri life is a solid 22-23 hours, (Standby is still amazing left it for 3 weeks, still full batteri) Negative: The (+/-) buttons are getting worn out, still works and will last a bit but it's getting annoying, D-pad (Right & Down) are a bit inaccurate and you have to press firmly (not hard) for it to register.

Thank you for this review. So glad I take my time with decisions like this almost got this and will get this but have optional back pedals and 8BitDo so tried and true and guaranteed to last. Thank you for this review, I almost bought this inferior product even though I was feeling uneasy based on how the reviewers reacted to button presses in the video because they would argue 10/10 review. You found a fan in me, looking forward to controller modding content for the switch pro controller because Motion Sense is game changing once dialed in and only used for slight additional movements in addition to analog (aka BoTW). Sadly almost no games use it so it takes a second to learn how to dial it in on Steam.

Best analog sticks ever, but the buttons are a problem. Day 1 when I got my Kingkong 2 pro and 15 minutes into my first gaming session with this controller I had a button get totally stuck. I had to take the controller apart to get this button unstuck. There is a very simple mod you can do to the button modules that will remove the tactile feedback completely and this fixes the issue and turns those buttons from a 3/5 to a 5/5. My buttons now have a linear feel similar to what you find on arcade sticks and its GREAT. I deem this modification essential for anyone who gets this controller. Without it the buttons feel like total garbage.
@lyndontan8887
@lyndontan8887 Год назад
how did you modify the buttons?
@stainz_4208
@stainz_4208 Год назад
@@lyndontan8887 instead of the rubber membrane buttons found in most controllers, the GuliKit buttons use a spring-loaded shaft sealed in a plastic housing. You will need to carefully pry open 4 plastic clips on the corners of the housing to open it. On 2 opposing sides of the housing are clips that line up with studs on the shaft inside to create the tactile feedback when the button is pressed. Simply rotate the shaft by 90 degrees so that the clips on the housing no longer line up with the studs on the shaft and clip the module back together. This will remove the tactile feedback and the button will never get stuck.

And the thing no one is talking about is the programmable 10 minute recording thing on the controller (yes, you can have your up to 10 minute macro repeat itself). Need to grind some XP in something like Elden Ring? Program running from the save point to the spawned boulder, and after it goes off the cliff, teleport back to the same save point, stop recording, set macro to repeat by double tapping the playback button. To stop playback, hit any button (joystick movement wont do the trick). In the case of this specific thing, you want to teleport to the save point, not run back to it. There were also some quality control issues with early units, the sticks would "stick" to the outside ring, that has been addressed. Also, update your firmware (both the CPU and 5.1 firmware, if using the pro, use NS09) and this will fix the slow polling and janky circular stick test results. Finally, there are options to purchase a package with three different stick lengths and to change the buttons to be in the style of an XBOX style controller if you so desire. There is also a dongle available that makes this controller compatible with the XBOX.

Very interesting about the inaccuracies outside of X-Input. To be clear was there extra input lag from the button responses and actual movement or is it more of an issue of the cursor not moving exactly where you'd expect? The controller has worked awesome for me but I mainly use it in X input mode using the brook adapter for series X, also on PC. Are these problems present on switch too? I didnt notice any delay issues on switch when using the Dpad. Would using a brook adapter in X input mode bypass the issues you mention? Appreciate the information. I use this controller on just about everything but PS5 since thats still not supported, even with the brook adapter.

They are "inaccurate" compared to what a modern PC game will expect from an X-input controller. In Switch mode it is outputting how a Switch expects sticks to output diagonal inputs. It isn't really valid to call that inaccuracy. In fact, in a firmware update they made it so you can switch between the 2 output ranges since some people want that option.
