In this video I explain why I think summer assignments are not worth assigning to students. First of all, this is a college course and colleges don't assign summer projects (to my knowledge). Second, students seriously begrudge summer assignments, and are very unlikely to get them done with any energy or passion.
But if you are required to give a summer assignment, then my best advice is this: give them an assignment that requires the SKILLS you will teach them, but different CONTENT.
If you want to have a look at my Great Moon Hoax example, here it is: docs.google.com/document/d/1Q...
If your students need content for their AP History course, check out my main channel at Heimler's History.

I just wanna say you are a phenomenal teacher and I wish I had you and I was in the high school. I am currently studying to be a history teacher and will be student teaching this fall. Even though I’m not a teacher yet these videos are giving me the car finance I need to be a good teacher. So thank you

Thank you , thank you , thank you for creating this channel!!! I am a first year AP teacher (after teaching middle school for 16 years) and I have struggled this year! I'm looking forward to your teacher content to help make me a better AP teacher!

Incredible! We will do this in the first week back! This sounds as fun for my students to argue as the "Is a Hot Dog a Sandwich" assignment!

I am SOOO doing this assignment!!!! Thanks for the laugh and the help! This channel is a great idea to share pedagogy techniques and ideas on how to engage the students with old disinteresting content (ie. Panic at the Disco er I mean the Panics of 1837 and 1893). Keep up the good work!

Also the sources on the document need to be edited to 1835 not 1935.

Ha, yeah I’ve always done something like this at the beginning of class, and it tends to stick with everyone till the last day...

Thank you so much for this channel and the Man-Bats lesson! I would love to see more fun lessons like this that will get the kids laughing. Also, anything that increases depth of knowledge on lesser-known societies for WHAP (Unit 3's gunpowder empires and Unit 8's decolonization sections especially).

Thank you for creating this. Every year, my students struggle with understanding the importance of what the US Bank was and how it operated and how it affected US history, which then makes it difficult for them to understand what Jackson's bank war and the creation of the independent treasury did. They probably struggle with this because I have a difficult time explaining it in a way that they can grasp. Maybe you could provide some tips at some point for ways of teaching the economics of US history is a more exciting way than I'm able to do at this point.

That's a great idea. We need to figure out a way to actually help them feel the tension over the bank. Now you've got me wondering what tension they already feel about society/economics today that we could help them apply to the Bank War. Stay tuned... my mind is spinning.

I would love some videos and tips on teaching APUSH in roughly 60 days for all us block schedule people. APUSH is a spring semester course at my school so we don’t start the semester until mid or end of January and the AP exam is early May with a week of spring break in the middle. So tips/advice/how to on what to focus on but make it an enjoyable/enriching experience we you only have 60ish days. PS LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos. This was my first year teaching APUSH and they really helped me figure out how to explain things (especially) writing to my students. Thank you for all you do for this community!!

@@HeimlersHistoryTeachers having a fan girl moment right now! You replied to my message. Thank you so much for considering that idea! The APSI kept focusing on year long teaching which left all us block schedule people (especially spring semester) frustrated and overwhelmed at the sheer thought of teaching it.

Yeah I’ve never taught in block but I’ve never understood how people do it... But I’m going to find somebody who knows.

Despite teaching this course for almost a decade, I can never figure out what notes kids should be doing, if they are helpful, or how to really get students to make the most out of them. Teaching freshmen is like starting from scratch on study skills, and I want to provide a great foundation for them, and yet I find them simply mindlessly writing down things from the text, and those things are usually just vocabulary words. Any advice or training on how to develop a system with students that will become a tool for them would be appreciated.

Can you do a video on pacing in APUSH? I have to give a summer assignment and I usually have the kids complete units 1 & 2.... I only have 120 days from Sept to the exam and I am ALWAYS rushing to just barely get to unit 8 :/

I wonder how much time you take for review before the AP exam and what methods you have found to produce the most engagement by the students during the review. I don't want the review to be just another lecture.
