This video is chock full of SPOILERS!
This video is my final thoughts on No Time To Die and the end of the Craig era from EON. I have many issues with the direction they took in this era and with this film in particular. As with my initial impressions video this is more in general terms and not a blow by blow breakdown of the film's plot beat for beat.
It did turn into a ramble but hopefully Bond fans can get something out of it.
Spoilers disclaimer: 00:00
Intro and NTTD: :00:30
My Rewrite pitch of NTTD: 36:43

A damn fine pitch for No Time to Die. Agreed that Crag’s send off (assuming he should have ever played the role) should have been Skyfall, the second best of his series behind Casino Royale. Still, I’d take a critically disregarded A View to a Kill or Moonraker any day over any of the Craig ventures.

My gosh! Maybe a little bit of a ramble, but I'm still impressed by your ability to keep on delivering your thoughts without any long pauses or loss of your train of thought. It's something I wish I could do. It's not something that is easy to do. I've tried. Honestly, I rather like No Time To Die, but it's not anywhere near perfect. Your pitch for a rewrite... Damn! That is a story ark conclusion with guts! A lot of guts. Seriously, it would've been so truly dark in a grown-up way. I'm sad that you're now done with this film because I'd have loved to listen to an audio movie commentary from you. I'm still new to your channel but enjoying everything I'm seeing so far.

Thank you!! It was a struggle for me to try and put my thoughts together on NTTD and try to stay constructive. This is one of my looser discussion videos where I have less of a structure so I’m glad it came across well! I’m really glad you liked the rewrite idea as I spent ages trying to think something to try and salvage out of the film. It’s VERY dark indeed but I thought that would be fitting with the story they started with to try and get something that was weighty in its drama and at least had some more Bondian flavor to it. I thought it also much better resembled the tragic and poetic elements of Fleming’s You Only Live Twice novel. I don’t know if I could ever do commentaries on the Craig era. Some people have asked me about it before but I really don’t have anything positive to say about them.

It sounds like it has the same kind of problems we see in a lot of modern films - they're written by committee. There's no singular guiding artistic vision driving the ship, nevermind the mastery of someone like Fleming. Frankly I would have been shocked if the film turned out to be decent at all.

The only Craig Bond film I slightly liked was Quantum Of Solace. At least in terms of the story and overall tone it had a Bond like feel that I appreciated and enjoyed. The rest are just action movies with Daniel Craig playing himself and I simply could never get into them for the life of me. And this film is ESPECIALLY a good example of that.

CR and QoS still felt like Bond films, from Skyfall on they took on really miserable visual styles and sub-Nolan writing.

I do agree with almost all of what you say here I will make an argument for the villain Safin. First off I’m 100% convinced he was originally Dr. No. The lone henchman at the end while he’s carrying Mathilde calling “Doctor” and the lack of him in the film tells me there’s scenes either revealing or make it obvious he’s Dr. No Now a lot of people shit on Safin for no laying out his plans, he has no motivation from killing Spectre to this world wide plot of releasing Heracles. Who are the buyers he’s selling this to? Why is he selling it? Why is he doing any of this? Obviously his motivations for Spectre is clear. He’s seeking revenge. I think his plans and way of taking them out though a bit convoluted are actually quite genius. He outsmarts the entire organization, and Blofelds plans of killing James. He’s 10 steps ahead of them the entire time and they don’t even know it. What I like about Safin is unlike 99% of Bond villains he DOESNT explain in excruciating detail to Bond or anyone what he’s doing and exactly how to stop it. He doesn’t go on a diatribe to Bond giving him every bit of detail he needs to ruin the plan. He stays purposefully mysterious to Bond and fills his head with misleading philosophical things that goes right over Bonds head. He stays ambiguous to a point Bond has no clue what he’s really doing. When Bond is running back to re open the bomb doors he shoots Bond numerous times and has him dead to rights, right there. Now admittedly he stupidly walks closer to Bond to be taken down BUT he had shot Bond enough that he would’ve died from the blood loss alone. Now to Safins genius “Insurance” the vile of Madeline and Mathildles DNA for Heracles. Again he’s 10 steps ahead of every one. He’s given this right in front of Madeline. She even asks what is that? He simply says “Insurance” again not giving her every detail she needs to tell Bond what he has. He keeps it purposefully ambiguous so he can’t be foiled. And IT WORKS. With all Bonds strength to throw Safin down and break his arm he STILL manages to defeat Bond and simply break the vile over his face robbing Bond of everything he thought he had. Again he had Bond dead from the gunshot wounds, and blood loss would’ve killed Bond even without being poisoned. But the added effect of the poison solidified that once again Safin won. Sure he was killed but as he said “my skills will remain long after I’m gone” Bond had no other options. If he even managed to escape that island that virus would eventually of gotten to them. As they saw with the Spectre members family. And what prophetic way to take them out! Safins whole family was killed, so he made sure all of their families were killed too. Not only did he manage to steal this virus from MI6, he altered it to be even more deadly, took out the most powerful crime syndicate in the world, and outsmarted the best 00 agent there’s ever been. I feel this character immediately gets shoved aside because people don’t see the larger picture of what he’s really doing and WHY he is the way he is. WHY his motivations are clouded and mysterious. Because he WANTS it that way. I think it’s a genius character who is unfortunately not used enough in the film BUT his presence looms from the start until he dies. His mere existence plagues the film the whole time in a way not a lot of other Bond villains have. I know you dislike the film, but I’d hope for a bit of recognition for the subtle genius Lyutsifer Safin really is.

Against my better judgement, I enjoyed NTTD. There are definitely things about it I DON'T like, but I went with it. The first half in particular has some really well done sequences. And if they'd gone some other ways, Ana de Armas could have been an all-time great Bond Girl. Maybe because it's the 5th Craig movie certain aspects I'm not keen on went down easier.

You seem to not understand (or choose not to believe) that the bond films have been rebooted multiple times. First timeline, 1962-1985. That was the same James bond, even though three actors portrayed him. Since then, each new actor has been a reboot. Second timeline, 1987-1989. Third timeline, 1995-2002. Fourth timeline, 2006-2021. For some reason you never grasped this until the Daniel Craig bonds, and now it's some new concept you're trying to reconcile with yourself.
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader 2 года назад
I don’t think you can consider a shift in tone a reboot since the character remained the same. Core elements weren’t changed until 2006 though if you wanted to dig deeper the Brosnan era could be considered a kind of attempt at reworking formula elements and deconstructing some of the core character beats. This seems to have really taken off with the arrival of Purvis and Wade on TWINE. The only other sort of distinction I could make is LTK being the last of the original team era fully under Cubby Broccoli-and the last all analog Bond film. The way I look at it is much like the continuation authors post-Fleming who kept the character and his world in place while updating the times around them. It wasn’t until Deaver’s Carte Blanche where there was an actual reboot attempt in the literary Bond realm.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader the James bond in the living daylights is not the James bond from dr. No. Plain and simple. Likewise, the James bond in goldeneye is not the James bond from license to kill. Except for Connery, lazenby, and Moore, where they overtly told the audience this is the same bond, new actor = new bond. I know they carried over judi dench, but those special cases are few... Like Desmond Llewellyn.

I didn't care for it. The Craig Bonds are hit and miss for me Casino Royale is his best . I'm one of the few who like Quantum Of Solace, Yes it was a bit messy because of the writer's strike and they had to make what they had. I'm not a huge Skyfall fan it's Good , but you can tell when things start to really get overly serious . I liked Spectre but felt it was too long it was starting to get complicated . NTTD i felt was just too overly complicated and too many writers in the screenplay.

Exactly, No Time To Die did not feel like a James Bond movie. James Bond dying in No Time To Die was unacceptable! James Bond is a timeless character and therefore should NEVER die in a movie! I think Cary Joji Fukunaga was the wrong director for No Time To Die. Apparently he watched a bunch of the older James Bond movies to prepare for No Time To Die and OHMSS was the one he kept re-visting. As I have said before for the future of the James Bond series they need to go back to the traditional approach. Make each movie a stand-alone story because that concept worked for twenty movies straight! BTW, on November 6th I did a double-feature of both GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies. I have always loved those two and as I have said before they just keep getting better and better each time I watch them. They hold up so well all these years later!
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader 2 года назад
Absolutely!!! Fukunaga was allowed to do non-Bondian elements and in interviews talked about suddenly discovering OHMSS much akin to the sudden internet reappraisal. Why they can’t understand the director has to be a diehard fan is beyond me just as they don’t understand one must cast an actor with experience who enjoys the role…. I just hope they got it out of their system. I’m the years to come the blowback from the Craig era will increase just as everyone jumped on the bash Die Another Day train. Both Goldeneye and TND dramatically improve when revisited. You forget how well put together they are and TND improves most of all over time. It’s more prescient now and is the last film to be even somewhat traditional. Plus they both have great sound mixes with TND being one of my all time favorites.

@matthewgaudet4064
@matthewgaudet4064 2 года назад
I didn't hate it but i didn't love it. Its biggest sin was it was boring and i was like meh. And it desperately wanted to be OHMSS. But overall it was the worst Bond since Quantum of Solace. Supporting characters were paper thin. The plot was ridiculous Heracles or whatever. Craig looked disengaged and he was going through the motions. The score sucked except for the parts they lifted from OHMSS. The action didn't work either. Bond didn't get the girl this time either the tone was muted. Bond the family man. His death was nearly as bad as Captain Kirk's or Luke Skywalker's. They ruined the series made all the previous films pointless. But hey we wrecked it but James Bond will return, please see our reboot in a few years. I'm not as nuanced or forgiving as you are i thought the entire thing was idiotic. I have a deep loathing for the Craig films. I'm a Martin Campbell fan and other than the opening scene and song i think Casino Royale is crap. Just unadulterated garbage.
