When you live in a country without much sun, you tend to develop Vitamin D deficiency. The fact that you had a night shift in Wyoming means that you probably have that effect amplified by three.

I live in a country with an average of just over 4 hours of sunlight a day and I’m often recommended by doctors to take vitamin D tablets.

I'm from Spain (where we have TOO MUCH sun!) and went on vacation this past october to Poland. Like 70% of the ads in the polish tv channels were for vitamin D supplements! Also a lot of ads for joint health supplements, for some reason that may be related idk.

I live in Illinois so we get plenty of sun between the months of like April to end of October, and yET my stupid body refuses to absorb any vitamin D without the help of supplements. My levels have hit 11 ng/ml and I was put on 50,000u of prescription strength Vitamin D. We got up to a nice healthy level a few months after. Fast forward like 5 months and uh-oh! Look who’s Vitamin D levels tanked again! (It was mine). Back on 50,000u. Recheck is good. Doctor orders me to continue taking an over the counter supplement. I’ve since added a 1,000u supplement to my morning medication cocktail. Was feeling pretty good but then winter rolled around and I can feel the deficiency exhaustion setting in again. It’s fun :)

I had a neighbor who decided to use her lawn mower in my sleeping hours. Every other day. So I kinda sorta started being snippy and on one of my nights off, I played really loud music in the back yard untilnsje came out shouting. We were in the same tiny apartment building. I was on my side and she came out to hers. Never heard the lawn mower again cause she moved away with her boyfriend a week later.

Yes! Neighbors in general are such a hassle. My family tends to be night owls, over a neighbor who goes to work early in the morning. We have a solid couple of hours where we can shuffle around without driving him crazy, and it drives *me* crazy!

That's actually the only con for me as a naturally nocturnal person. A night shift suits me well cause I dislike sunlight and enjoy the dark, and extra pay and stuff is a cherry on top, only issue is that other people are active during the day which makes sleeping through the day difficult
@LadybugsOpin

This is why, when I did night shift for about 2 years, I learned how to sleep with earplugs. At one point, though, there was a plumbing issue and my landlord got the shittiest plumbers ever, who insisted that they needed to access the pipes by tearing apart my flooring... in a basement suite... it was concrete. They needed to use a jackhammer... all fucking day... for multiple consecutive days. And I had nowhere else to stay. I was in hell!
@carlosleonelli1139

That’s fine lol I learned to sleep with noise, and I return the favour of not caring when people are sleeping, it’s honestly really weird I can sleep perfectly fine with sunlight shining directly on me, noise and under most other bothersome circumstances. all while still instantly waking up if someone enters my room or a noise that’s not supposed to be there gets made. I do sleep very weirdly tho I’m practically always Conscious and always know that I’m dreaming and remember them. sometimes I’ll even make logical thought process in my dream like, what was that noise oh just my sister getting home from school all in my dream, or will remember a conversation that people in my house were having while I was sleeping. I can go from sleep to complicated conversation in a instant. If someone asks me something I also answer usually, people used to think I was pretending to be sleeping because of how easily I transition from sleep to wake.

My mom has been a 12-hour night shift nurse for 40 years now. Coffee has become the one thing keeping her going and she's pretty much given up going to social events so she can get sleep. Nocturnal life has become so normal she doesn't really know what she's going to do when she retires. My mom works 3 to 4 times a week so on the days off she tries to get up a little earlier for appointments and things. I have no idea how she does it, but I applaud people who are willing to change their lifestyle in order to be there for others. Thank you!

I work night shift, here are my tips and tricks to surviving.... I have been doing this for a long time now. It's an art form. I highly recommend to double up on the blackout curtains. That's right TWO SETS. *MAYBE THREE* The difference is monumental. Also, get floor length blackout curtains, double those puppies up, and use a tension rod to put them in your doorway. This reduces noise SIGNIFICANTLY, as well as cuts the amount of light able to enter your room. If you have pets that like to sleep with you, it's even better because you can use something to prop your door slightly open (but mostly closed) and they can come and go whenever they want and it's still dark af. It's also not a bad idea to have things like tapestries or other things that will help reduce noise from being able to bounce around. For instance, my room shares a wall with our living room wall that has the TV on it. I got those ikea wardrobes, and put them full across that wall. The clothes help cut the noise of the TV by a lot. Also, a desk fan, noise machine, or a sleep sound playlist is also a fantastic idea. We have a desk fan we turn on, and the sound Pavlov's dogs us into falling asleep. Melatonin supplements can also be useful if you ever throw your sleep out of wack, but I wouldn't use them every day. But oh man, they can be a real hail marry if you're having a rough time.

A friend is someone you spend time with and have fun with. If you don’t do that with your friends, are they even considered friends at that point?
@thegiovannimauro
@thegiovannimauro 2 года назад
@@dylanguava1867 If you have fun while you are together and genuinely enjoy being around each other why does it matter how often you see each other to be considered friends? Idk how old you are, but I'm sure that for most the older you get the less likely you are to spend time with friends between being busy with work/life and trying to balance that with seeing family and being their for your own. In some ways seeing friends less often can be beneficial in the sense that you'll have more things to touch on and talk about as opposed to just saying a slightly different version of what you said yesterday.

I also worked graveyard for years! Though, not as a nurse. Massive respect to you, brother. I think, other than Vitamin D, our circadian rhythms all adjust differently. I had some pretty bad habits that developed in me an affinity for isolation, and the easiest way to be isolated all of the time is to just be awake when nobody else is, too. So part of me still has a hard time associating the sun going down with the end of a day, but rather it always feel like things have just begun once it gets dark. The thing about basking in sunlight before bed is absolutely true tho, can be a blessing and a curse.

It sucked that I never got to go on morning walks and stuff like that, but there were a few pros. As someone who has worked a graveyard Shift for about 6 years. The significant other stuff hits HARD... With my last Ex-Gf, she worked in the early mornings so like 10a.m. to 6p.m. and me with the opposite time of 10p.m. to 6a.m. it really sucked, since by the time I arrived to work I would simply make her B-fast and wake her up so she would go to work, and she would do the same for me. We ended up spending about 1-2 hours/day max together awake and it sucked. This spiralled into losing a lot of our intimacy both physically but more importantly emotionally. This eventually led us to basically become roommates who slept on the same bed. Sadly the relationship just died. So yes, dating can be REAL hard unless both are willing to put up with a semi constant lack of sleeping and a lot of effort.

Hm, that’s pretty interesting. My preferred hours of sleep are actually somewhere between 2AM and 12 AM. As a freelancer and an artist, I’ve had many different sleeping schedules in my life but out of them all I absolutely despised waking up at around 5-6 AM for school or work. I’ve always ended up miserable and cranky throughout the whole morning and had to take an 1 hour nap after going home, no matter how much sleep I got during that night, just so I have enough energy to exist. Now, waking up at around 11-12 AM I’m usually perfectly rested and ready to take on the day. When it comes to creativity, with my current sleeping schedule I’m at my most creative at around 5PM to 2AM and that’s when I usually work. Then I need an hour for some self care and a quick shower and I go to sleep. That being said, I don’t like going to sleep later than 4 AM. Naturally, my body starts going into survival mode if I don’t head out to bed before 4 AM. I will usually get very hungry and my heart will beat faster, making me equally tired and restless. I also hate falling asleep when it’s sunny outside but once I fall asleep I don’t really mind it. So, that’s what I found out works for me. It also leaves me with some time in the afternoon to do the shopping and other chores while it’s still working hours for everyone. It feels healthy to me, I don’t know if there’s anyone in the comments who can confirm or deny it but if there’s any way you can adjust your schedule and sleep between 3AM and 11AM I can fully recommend it.

I personally find just about the opposite to be true. It's hard to have my schedule be where I'm not awake at night. Even if I forcefully correct it, it just sorta falls back to night owl.

A chunk of working nights successfully is prep. Blackout curtains, earplugs, vitamin D supplements, and knowing what’s open when before choosing when bedtime is are all necessary. Also, tricking your brain gets helpful, such as keeping lights on at night but turning them off during your daytime hours. I also like going to bed in the morning, cause sunrise and sunset are easilly confused, especially if you’ve been indoors working when it started.

I work night shift at a convenience store. As a natural night owl with autism, this is the perfect job for me. It’s so quiet and peaceful, nobody really butting in to disturb me, nothing to overload my senses, and I don’t have a manager breathing down my neck and I can get my work done as I see fit, as long as it gets done. My boss is super appreciative of me and I’m at my happiest just chilling and mopping at 3 AM.

i have been on night shift for the past 5 years in wyoming working 6 PM to 6AM and honestly it doesn't bother me ive gotten used to it and actually enjoy having a ample amount of alone time. The main thing that pisses me off is that walmart screwed over night shift people by closing at 11pm now due to covid. I used to love going shopping at 2 am when there was hardly no one around but now walmart is always packed even right before closing.

I have a suggestion for the title and thumbnail. Rather than titling the video something niche, like "No Vitamin D," you could instead title the video "I Tried Being Nocturnal for a Year" or "I Only Slept During the Day for a Year," because that sounds a lot more enticing and interesting. Then, in the thumbnail, do a side by side. On one side, a picture of your character looking normally with the caption "Day 1." And on the other, a picture of your character looking sleep deprived, with the caption "Day 365." I think that would have wider appeal and would get this amazing video in front of more people

It was about seven months and the thumbnail is fine
@SuperMustache555

This hits so hard during my time as a call center agent. People outside are singing videoke and having fun and you're annoyed that you need to sleep through all of that, and try not to sing along. Better not order anything online as the delivery guy will always come at an inconvenient time. And Family will drop by to give food from Sunday outings (which is nice) but you just wish to pick it up yourself at your own time.

Hey that sleep study specialist was a good idea! I'm studying to be a neuroscientist one day, and as I have a delayed sleep cycle, I was worried about finding a job that strats by noon or later. I could definitely specialize in sleep and work the evenings and nights. They would probably be okay with me giving lectures at noon, students would be more likely to show up too.

My fiance started working night shift a few months ago. It has it's rough moments for sure, but the pay is certainly a help since we're trying to save for a house. Apartment living is not great for his schedule, especially once construction started next door so all through the day its heavy machinery noises, the whole building shakes sometimes. Hopefully in a couple years he'll have enough seniority to switch to days.

My dad was able to flip his sleep schedule within a day. He did so every week, twice a week, for something like a couple DECADES. He worked night shift during the week Monday night through Thursday night, and spent time with us on the weekend (spending Friday flipping his schedule through strategic naps, Saturday + Sunday with us, and Monday flipping it back). He never understood when I complained about my sleep schedule getting out of control at the drop of a hat.

I am the complete opposite. I find myself more awake, productive and aware at night, as well as sleeping easier during the day. I struggled with this in high school and after speaking with some sleep doctors, they proposed that it might just be how I'm wired. Lucky me I guess, night shift jobs are always in extremely high demand :)

Tbh most of the cons you've listed I see as absolute win. I tried to change my sleep schedule for when I had a semester of almost exclusively 8 am classes in 2nd year of uni. It was probably my worst year in terms of sleeping. Idk, my body naturally switches to be active at night, so much so that when I don't have any early classes the next day, there's no chance I'm falling asleep before 4 am, unless I hapoen to feel super tired. That's why I dread the day I have to get a job and switch to early morning wake up schedule again. Even the day shift (12pm-10pm and such) sounds dreading because I always have a crisis during the afternoon and my body half-shuts down calling for a nap for no reason. Which is why I'd love to work during the night, also because some of my friends live across the ocean and I always have to stay up late to chat with them. And alone time at work? Frick yeah, nothing sounds worse than dealing with people at work.

I've been working graveyard for the last 9yrs. From 22 to 31. It was easy in the first few years. My body has slowly begun to rebel and REFUSE to sleep during the day and i get almost comatose at night at work. Maybe I'm finally getting...old. For the food point, i love being able to eat whatever whenever. I also find that my schedule outside of work for like appointments and such is soooo much better working graveyard. Need a doctor appointment? Anything before noon is great! Have a family emergency that you suddenly have to take care of? Great! You already had your shift for the day or it's early enough in the afternoon that you can still go to work that night! Need to grocery shop? Perfect! The shop opens at 6am and nobody but the employees stocking the shelves and the geriatric grandmas getting cat food for Mr. Blinky are there and you're in and out in a flash. Have a long commute home? Smooth sailing cuz allllll the bumper to bumper traffic and accidents are on the opposite side of the highway as everyone else is going in to work. As far as love went, I got lucky and married a Frenchman who was 7 timezones ahead of me so no matter what time i was up "late" he'd be awake cuz at my crack of dawn was his early noon lunch break ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ tho this will be harder on us when we move in together eventually. Only big con for me is the sunlight gives me migraines something fierce, i can't see well driving during the day anymore, and my depression has gotten way worse.

Last year I was working for ER admitting. 12hr shifts 7-7. Terrible thing though was it would change between night and day shift. They would maybe give me a full day to reset my internal clock before coming back to the opposite shift. So I COMPLETELY understand the pain involved in switching between the two clocks.

I’ve worked nights for the past 6 years for the same pay as someone working days and as a supervisor. In my experience I rather like the laid back atmosphere since it was just me and my crew, but you miss so much. I missed so many birthdays and holiday dinners because I simply was asleep when those things happened. You could wake up early but then risk going to bed too early for work the next day. It really sucked not being able to see everyone when they all live on a different schedule than me
