Thanks SO MUCH!!!!! Everyone told me it was my deep well pump (a month old) or the line coming into the house has a leak. Watched a number of your videos which enabled me to gain at least a decent understanding of the system. It is going to be that line beneath the switch which I will fix tomorrow! Saved me a lot of money and I am so grateful. Will have a hard time getting to sleep now. I've shut the well pump off so I don't blow a pipe etc... No heat tonight (geothermal system) so will be cold here in Manitoba Canada tonight but by noon tomorrow I'm certain all will be up and running again. Thanks again so much for doing what you do.

Situation: replaced the pressure tank. Also replaced switch, gauge, pressure release valve and all linking pipes. 40-60 switch in place. Does not go to 60. Stays on. Turn off power, pressure drops to zero with nothing on. Turned off hot water supply (to and from tank). Nothing changes. Turned off cold water and the pressure (on the gauge) drops to zero? Turn cold water back on and the pressure resumes... not to 60, but back up to 45 or so. I am dumbfounded. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello I'm als0 having intermittent water problems. Water will stop after a couple minutes so we shut faucet off and after a few minutes we can turn the faucet back on and water will work for just a couple minutes again. It seems like the water pressure gauge is stuck at 70 psi . It won't decrease even if the water stops working. Does this mean if I change that gauge the system should start working correctly?

Thanks so much for an informative and very helpful video! With your help, I just fixed a well that has been giving us fits for a year. Like the pressure switch you showed in this video, Mine was full of rusty hard water deposits. I disassembled the diaphragm from under the switch and found that the pipe into the diaphragm was plugged nearly solid. Cleaned up, it works like it should, and I can quit fearing the cost of a new pump. :) If you find yourself in Colorado, I owe you a case of your favorite beverage, my friend!

Old system, no pressure reading from air side of tank. Pressure builds up, then starts rapid cycling on and off until water coming out of pressure relief valve. Thoughts much appreciated!
@h2omechanic

Replace the tank, it's bad. You can try adding air to the tank (but have 0psi of water pressure in the tank when you add air). Pump it up to 28psi & try the system after that. That'll be a band-aid til u replace the tank. Also remove the pressure switch & see if the little pipe/nipple below it is clogged (it might be!) But regardless, replace the tank. Keep the pump breaker off whenever you are not in need of water!!! Or you'll risk killing the pump

Hi - greetings from Ireland! Thanks - your videos have been very educational and very well (sorry) explained. It took me a while to find this particular one but when I did I went woah! that's my problem! Yes, water was OK then running down and stopping, and after an hour or more it would magically come back on for a while, then off again. And yeah, it was gunk in the spigot and all the way up into the pressure switch - like solid brown rusty gunk. I took the Square D switch apart - 6 screws, then gently peel back the rubber assembly. It took a lot of gentle cleaning to get it all out - I didn't want to push a screwdriver in there in case I damaged the rubber membrane. So I used a dish wash brush, a piece of wood, and tissue. Put it all back together and it purrs. I might have a look at the pressure tank - I tested it with a car foot-pump and it seems to be around 20 psi and should be 28 psi. But I'm happy, and have that nice feeling when you learn to do something new. Thanks again - I'll pass this info on to my brother and my nephew for the day when they will have this problem.

My switch colors are, (left to right)white, black, red, black… can it be different for different switches? 🤔 I inherited my father’s house after he passed. I wish he would have spoken to me about all the issues this house has before he passed but he had dementia. Our water pressure has been really strong, but lately the pressure is getting so low at times it’s hard to even shower. I’ve been watching videos on how to check the tank pressure but honestly it’s a little confusing. All this cut in and out psi. Which I think should be between 40-60 on the switch but I have been running all the water in my house and have a hose off the pressure tank to drain it but my gauge still says 62. It hasn’t moved at all… the videos all say the gauge should go to zero.. Any help would be greatly appreciated bro. You even offering to help ppl on here shows what a good guy u are. I know ur prob busy so u may or may not see this. Finger crossed lol!

I'm SO glad I saw your video. I'm a do-it-yourselfer but confess the electricity and the water associated with this intimidates me. I think my bladder has a leak. The gauge is not at 0. I can see water has sprayed around the area but I could not find an active leak. Of course I found this out Friday evening after 6. I decided to turn the power off to the pump to be safe. (Which is located outside inside of a pipe). While down there, every now and then I would hear an electrical hum that would last for about 10 seconds and then stop for a bit. I had a new switch installed almost a year ago. I suspect the bladder inside the tank has developed a leak. It's wet below the tank. Dirt floor, but did not notice any puddles. I couldn't notice any damaged hoses. Any advise?

Hey, really like all the videos you have posted. They are very informative and have been very helpful along the way with troubleshooting my well and pump issues by prosses of elimination. However I still can't seem to quite figure out the pressure problem that I'm having. I replaced my tank initially because the blatter in the tank was bad. Also while replacing the tank I went ahead and replaced the pressure switch as well, and I also repiped from the well to the tank with new pipe because the system is about 25 years old and needed to be upgraded as the pipe was old and brittle. I have a 30/50 pressure switch and a 32 gal tank. I adjusted the tank pressure and pressure switch accordingly. I have checked for power to the well and on both sides of the switch and my pump is pumping water to my tank and all is good there but, the issue I'm having is the pressure seems to be sporadic on my pressure gauge, sometimes it cuts in at 30psi and off at 35 or on at 25psi and off at 35psi, it's all over the place but will never get up to 50 psi. The most it will pressurize up to is 40psi and cuts out. I have a check valve in the system before the pressure switch and I have two gauges. One gauge before and one after the pressure switch, when the pump kicks on they will both go up to 40psi at the most. However the gouges before the check valve drops to 0 when the pump cuts out and the one after the switch will hold at 35 to 40 psi. The only conclusion I can come up with is that my hose or pipe from the motor has a small leak somewhere because I have no water pressure holding from between the motor and the check valve so I'm assuming the water is being lost back down.to the well somewhere in the pipe or hose. I also know there is no water inbetween those two points because I have a spigot in the line and there is no water in between the two points as well, when I open it, and when the pump is not pumping. However as soon as the pump kicks on I have water and pressure between the two points again but I'm only getting about 40psi tops? If you have any more helpful suggestions please let me know or if you believe i need to pull my well pump motor please let me know as i was hoping not to have to go that route! Thanks for reading hope you can help.
@h2omechanic
@h2omechanic 2 года назад
Your definitely on the right track! You must pull the pump out of the well 1st! Your going to find a cracked fitting or pipe near the pump or a Galvanized fitting that's rotted a hole in it. This is why you can't reach to 50 psi. 100% a leak down the well. Sometimes a fitting will unthread itself too. So just inspect everything very close. Just replace the fittings with brass or stainless.

This was very informative. I live in the Philippines and our water pressure is low. We have a pressure tank, a pressure switch and gauge setup to give us better water pressure. Now I'm having a problem. I replaced the pressure switch but put the wires on the wrong connectors (I followed the old switch and it was wrong). Anyway, I changed the wiring and now when I turn the pump on, I get 2 to 4 psi and nothing else. I bled the pressure tank but that didn't help. Could my incorrectly connecting the pressure switch have caused this new problem? I can't figure this problem out and could use the help.

excellent video, troubleshooting I needed to see. So lol, I'll have the water going for dishes, a shower, flushing the toilet, etc and the water will run out. I investigated in my basement and found a shallow pump, attached to a pressure switch, linked also was an old hot water tank. When I tapped on the pressure switch it came back on, and started to "fill up" and then shut off. go back upstairs and continue with dishes. After a month or so of going downstairs and tapping on the switch, it has gotten to the point where it will fill a quarter of a bathtub and slowly run out. I'll go down and tap and sometimes i won't need a tap on the switch. by the time i go upstairs, it will be ready for another quarter tub full, switch of again, repeat. I'll mention i killed the power and cleaned the contacts on the switch, but same old thing. I have not tried to remove the switch and clean the pipe. Does it sound like a good 2nd step? Super hard water here, with a pH of 7.5. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks H@0 Mechanic

I'd say yes, definitely remove the switch and clean the feed line. Under the plastic cover will say On/Off...go to Ace or Lowes & buy a new switch that's the same pressure or a little higher. @h2omechanic
@h2omechanic Год назад
Sometimes a frozen well head can cause the pump to run 24/7. Pushing against the ice blockage will cause the drop pipe to burst near the pump bc its dead heading around 200psi. The electric motor becomes hot and heats the water, that makes the pipe weaker & it eventually pops.
@fryefamily

@Travel with the Frye Family so a busted drop pipe leaking out pressure will stir up the water & sediment. Your description is spot on, especially when you got alot of sediment. Open & faucet and kill the power, see if gurgling happens. It's very common for a suction effect to happen bc the pipe below grade is broken, so everything drains down. (Power must be off during the test)

So I fixed the pipe which was leaking pretty heavy still and replaced the switch and water was running great. I lost the water pressure last week and work all the time. So my brother capped the pipe that use to be a faucet while I was at work. The house and setup is from the 50s so an inch shark bit is too big and a 3/4 is too small idk why that is. Anyways no I try to physically add air into the valve stem by the gauge and it doesn’t go over 15 nor does it hold pressure. I really need water been without for almost a week and a half. We noticed my pressure tank that runs water to the house had a bad bladder and was filled with water. So i replaced it with my brother. The water tasted better after and wasn’t as salty. But then the next day it shut off during my shower again. I went out and flicked the pressure switch and there was a spark. My well pump was expelling water briefly when i flicked the connection on. I think the new pressure tank has water in it again.. thankfully there’s a warranty. Is this a bad pressure switch or is the stem clogged you think?

No spark means the pump isn't running. So either the pump is dead or the wire down the well has broke . Pull the pump out & look for (open) exposed copper. You'll find where the plastic wire coating has rubbed off. If the wire looks good, then replace the pump. Note Always test a pump for 5 sec above ground before installing it. Just hook up the wires & make sure it spins

Great videos. night before turket day and ive got issues. minimal water pressure at faucets. and what pressure i have is directly related to the pump being on or off. when the breaker is turned off the water stops immediately. breaker on i get a slow rate of water flow. as if if the faucet was just a little bit turned on. but its full open. so i checked pressure tank as per your video. Tank is hollow sounding, not heavy, no water at the schrader valve. went to drop the water from the tank to check psi and no water drains from the tank? so my incoming water from the well is not filling the bladder…. and by the way the hi lo switch is constant on, its not switching off at all. possibly becuase the pressure is not building to ever turn the switch off? and last thing i want to point out. so ive got water coming up from well but i can easily put finger over the pipe end and stop that water from coming up. im thinking the amount of water coming up from the well would spray like crazy if i tried to stop it with my finger? thinking maybe water line somewhere maybe has a fracture prior to entering the house? should that water coming up from the well pump be a gusher? 1/2 HP, not sure how deep. any thoughts? at daylight im going to open up the top of the well and see if i can spot any obvious issues on that end. ive never looked in there 20 years since we bought this house. amazing how well it all works, unitl it doesn’t. i welcome your input! nice clear info! Thanks.

I'm going to say there's a 90% chance of a break down in the well, either in the pipe or pump fitting. 10% chance you have a leak in the yard, you'd find a wet area. Id say this morning your gonna have to pull the pump out. If its 100ft, its a easy 2 man job. Thank you for your reply! I got cold feet on pulling the pump myself and probably best that i did. Removing the well head took an hour with two guys that knew what they were doing. The pulled it all up and out 80’. Found that the 1981 motor was running good. Hello H2O Mechanic, I live in the country. My well tank is about 2 years old. I just have NO water a few hours ago. I checked the well tank PSI and it’s ZERO. I just followed a few tips you gave us here such as: 1) releasing the air pressure valve and only air came out, 2) tank sounded like a bell, 3) the tank is pretty light, 4) the electrical box was closed (ie not opened). What do you might be other possible causes? Thank you in advance for getting back to me.

We have an overflowing well, for some time now; and I recently noticed the pressure valve jumping back and forth between zero and about 40 pretty consistently for I’m not sure how long. I’m wondering if the overflowing well could be a contributing factor.

I cleaned out the filler tube to the switch and that didn't seem to resolve the issue so I replaced the switch and the supply pipe. That also didn't resolve the issue. The new switch has been adjusted to 40-60 on the large spring, I get 60 lbs showing on my gauge with 38 lbs in the pressure tank and the tank has no water in it. What could I be missing, any recommendations? Cheers

Please help me out sir. I have a Sta-Rite water ump for my home. I have a pretty tall tank connected to it. I lost pressure the other day due to a leak from a pvc pipe that connects from the top of the well pump to the tank. I replaced it abs I also replaced the pressure switch because I think it was starting to get bad. I put a brand new 30-50 pressure switch on it. I primed it like I have always done but the pressure builds up abs just stays floating between 30 and 30 psi and you see the needle just dancing and the pump doesn’t want to stop. I have to force it to stop. I have no leaks. The tank is about 3 years old which I bought at Home Depot. I have had a lot of incidences that the pump was running for hours without me knowing and the pump was just so hot I felt it was about to explode. It has happened to me a lot so I am wondering if the pump is going bad. The pump was already installed before I bought the home so it was used. The tank has pressure I think like 28psi when the pump is not running and about 35psi when it is running. I had a tech guy come out the other day and he couldn’t get me back up and running like before. Currently I was able to get enough pressure to get water but it’s low. I can’t seem to get it any higher past 30psi. I have played with the adjustment needles on the pressure switch but it just not working. How do I know when a well pump starts going bad? One clue for me is that I don’t hear the water rushing loud like I used to when The pressure built up. Please help. Should I invest in a new pump or do you think it’s the tank? The tech told me he’s 99% sure that it’s the pump. I have tried my best to relieve any air in the lines and at the pump as well

We thought that the well had to run out of water. Unfortunately, not on my advice the spin down filter was opened while the well was off and completely drained all water back into the well, now getting The flashing load which means overload someone suggested I might have mud or a pebble in the motor which probably sounds like it’s gonna have to be pulled. Is there any other reason that I might have the overload sensor tripping?

Where do i start. I had a problem with my pressure switch. Replaced it. The old switch was faded so i thought bigger was better so i went with a 40/60 . after the pump would not build pressure passed 42 psi i thought i had bought the wrong pressure switch. I bought a 20/40 psi. But now i feel when the pump kicks on and off. I believe i have a bad pressure tank but have not checked yet. If my pump is not building pressure passed 42 psi is this a sign of a bad pump. You have stated that it will continue to pump on some systems to 120 psi. Thank you in advance.

Your pump is old and worn out. Or you have a small leak in the well on a fitting connection between pump & pipe, it can be leaking out alot of your pressure. A good tank should feel almost empty of water and you can tip it side to side. A bad tank will weigh 200lbs & won't budge if you tip it

Big fan of your videos i just have a problem with my well. I have no water and the pressure gauge is showing 0 psi when I look at the pressure switch it is in the on position which means the pump is on. When I shut power off of the pump for an hour or 2 the pressure goes to 45 psi or so and the water comes back but the pressure switch is still in the on position and doesn't switch off. If I use the water the gauge goes to 0 psi and I lose water again. As far as I'm aware the tank itself is fine and the pump controls are also fine. If u have any ideas as to what my problem could be some help would be amazing. Thanks
@h2omechanic
@h2omechanic 4 года назад
Sounds like you probably have a leak (leaking toilet) that has drained the well dry. Kill the power for 12 hrs. & check to sew if any toilets leak down in the first hour. It only builds 45psi bc the pump is struggling to lift the water & then it runs dry again when u use it. Drops to 0. Look for leaks under house & in the yard too. Almost certain thats it. Or your well has slacked off with its production rate of flow.

Well then yes, id say its running out of water. 50% of the time its a toilet that is using the water the well makes. Get pressure to 50psi & kill the power & see if the pressure gauge moves any in 10 minutes ie: a leak. If all is good & no leak, Google well drilling companies & ask about Hydro-Fracing your well. Or Google Hydro-Fracing companies Look to spend $2500-$3500 on a frac.

Hello my name is Jerry. In my home i have this same set up. The problem i have or the issue is i have plenty of pressure, but about once every min the water pressure drops but for just a second then back to normal. Do you think the small tube could be stopped up or do you think the pressure tank is bad? I pressed the valve on top of the tank and only air came out. I was told if water came out then the tank is bad. but it was only air. I changed water filter couple weeks ago and water is already dirty, so i guess pump is cutting on several times and keeping the water agitating. Any thoughts?
@h2omechanic
@h2omechanic 3 года назад
2 possible situations like you said. First kill the power & go remove the switch and see if that nipple below switch is clogged. Be sure to drain off all the water pressure before you do it. While you have the switch off & water drained off, do a tank slosh test. Tipping the tank a few times & listen to see if you can hear water sloshing around inside the tank. If you hear water in there or if it's extremely heavy the tanks bad . If it's light weight & hear no water then it's still good. Be sure to look under the switch cover & find the on/off numbers. The air pressure in the tank needs to be 5psi below the "on" number. Have a tire pressure gauge to check the tank air pressure. What your describing is the tank has too much air, but air doesn't magically go up. Sometimes a pinhole leak allows water to displace some on the air and ends up increasing the air pressure & causes your problem. But at that point water is ontop of the bladder and that's bad. But the tip test will show you if that's the case.

One question. My tank sounds like a bell but my tire pressure gauge on the schrader valve reads zero. My pressure switch is 30/50. Should I air up to 25 before checking the switch contacts and nipple and might the increase in air pressure cure my problem?

@h2omechanic 3 года назад
Correct. Follows these steps. Turn off well breaker Open sink faucet, leave open. Add air to tank to 25psi,no more then 28 When adding air, water traded in tank will be forced out of open sink faucet. Once air reaches 25 psi, close sink faucet and turn breaker back on. If you were having problems with your Pressure, then yes itll fix your problem.

Looking for help in Ontario Canada. Breaker to well convertible jet pump tripped and all water pressure in our house was lost. Re-set breaker, pump made a humming noise but wouldn't start, and breaker tripped again. Air tank is operating properly (drained, pressurized to 28psi for 30/50 pressure switch on new pump), and confirmed voltage. Installed new 0.5hp pump (same hp as original) and primed courtesy of neighbour's garden hose. With valve on house side of pump closed to isolate pump/well side, we turned the new pump on after system was thoroughly primed. Pumped turned on, but struggled to maintain pressure at 15psi, and needle on pressure gauge was fluttering wildly. Sound coming from pump seemed to indicate pump was pulling air. To ensure I hadn't bought a defective pump, I returned it and purchased a 0.75ph (same 30/50 pressure switch.) Reconnected new pump, re-primed, but got the same result, with low pressure, fluttering pressure needle, and sound of air being pulled. Is it reasonable to assume I've got a foot-valve issue, or possibly a crack somewhere in the pipe leading out to the well? According to previous owner of house, well was dug in 1978, and I'm assuming the lines leading to the well are the same age. (Lines are buried +5 feet, so they're well below our frost line.) Thanks in advance for your assistance. Cheers.
