Empress ..HA HA Great reaction This song is about a guy who meets a girl (Lola) in a club who takes him home and rocks his world. The twist comes when we find out that Lola is a man. As stated in The Kinks: The Official Biography, Ray Davies wrote the lyrics after their manager got drunk at a club and started dancing with what he thought was a woman. Toward the end of the night, his stubble started showing, but their manager was too tanked to notice.

Davies claimed that he was inspired to write “Lola” after Kinks manager Robert Wace spent a night in Paris dancing with a transgender woman. This song came out at a time when talking about LGBTQIA people would get a song banned from the radio. This was cleverly worded so that one *could* interpret that line "I'm glad I'm a man, and so is Lola" to mean Lola is glad the singer is a man. It was *just* enough to get it aired on the more "daring" starions.

This is one of them songs, where they try to get past Sexually deviant things through the moral ethics committee at the BBC, headed by Mary White House, who wouldn't allow sex of any kind on the airwaves. It all started with the Goon shows, They would often put Sexual Innuendos Into the scripts of their Comedy series And because they read off the jokes so fast, and hide them so well, they managed to get them past BBC's ethics committee and get one over on the BBC.

He actually sings I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola. Which kind makes it a little ambiguous if he means that she's glad he's a man or if he means that she's a man. This was done on purpose, and yes, this song is about a guy falling in love with a drag queen.

You got it - but there is a twist - "I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola" could mean that Lola is glad I'm a man too. There are no songs about transvestites because the Kinks sang Lola and you can't do the subject better than this song.

I've watched a load of reactions to "Lola" and a few of them didn't realise what the song was about. I feel that you had a suspicion very early in the song and your reaction when it was confirmed was absolutely priceless. The best yet. I've been a Kinks fan since their first single in the early sixties. That gives my age away. Ray Davies was the best storyteller in the sixties in my opinion because he never conformed to the norm. He just came out with fabulous lyrics. Autumn Almanac, Come Dancing. The list is far too big to put here. Brilliant. I loved this video.

I showed this Song (Video) to my Gay Granddaughter, her Girlfriend and her Friends. At first they didn't catch it and I played it again and told them to really listen to the lyrics. They just started Laughing. Then asked questions. I told them that back then a lot of us didn't care and we were going forward but the past 10-15 years we have been going backwards. The next song that I played for them was a song by Lou Reed😂.

Then pick any song from the musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (NYC Musical and movie). Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) has covered a number of the songs in live awards shows.
