The small black flies get blown off the sand dunes along the beaches when there is a westerly wind. As an offshore fishing captain from New Jersey I have encountered this over 50 times in my career. I fish the canyons you were transitiing through. You wouldn’t think they could survive, however they grab any form of structure and stay put. Enjoy your journey!

Used to be a deck hand on lobster boats out of NEw Jersey and we had tons of gear right where you passed by near the canyons. I was also stationed in the US Coast Guard on Fire Island (50 miles west of Montauk). The flys are horrendous in that offshore corner if it’s realitviely calm on shore and a gusty storm passes through around dinner time. The west / south winds blows all the flys out to sea and of course they land anywhere they can. BRUTAL!!

Flying fish are good eating, I used to collect them from the deck of whatever ship I was on and take them to the galley, the cook would have some and he would fry them up for breakfast for us. nice! They seemed bigger back then, there were a lot more fish in the seas too. I remember when anchored in the roads waiting to go alongside we would cut a 45 gallon drum in half, fill them up with sea water and then get the lines over the side and get fishing, have a few cold ones and soon enough we had enough fish to get the barbie on and have a little party. The ship's cook was master of ceremonies, drunkenness was not frowned upon either! Not turning to in the morning WAS!

Hi professional competent team. Small but vital suggestion from peanut gallery -- put that rope netting all around the boat fastened to the stainless cables /rails which stop adults falling overboard This is a health and safety risk mitigation alert. To keep you little man safe. Risk analysis with crawling soon to be running boys is off the charts. This comes from a good place !!! And is in no way a criticism Being a father of two boys who is a water baby yet still saved by an aunt as a toddler in the bad old days when there was no safety around swimming pools. The speed of the little fellas is remarkable. It seems in split seconds they disappear on their own perilous journeys. Heart to heart mate wishing you all the best and acknowledging you obvious intellect, attention to detail and safety acumen. Kindest regards

You can make ice cream super easy with either half & half or heavy cream. I've always used half & half but I imagine heavy cream would be the same just a little thicker. Anyways get a quart, and gallon size ziplock bag. Then put the half&half in the smaller bag with some vanilla extract and pinch of salt (other flavors can be added with fresh fruits or other flavored extracts). Put a lot of ice in the bigger bag with a LOT of salt. The salt helps lower the freezing temperature and helps with the process. . Then put the smaller bag into the larger bag and shake for 5-10 minutes and you'll have some better then store bought ice cream. Enjoy! :)

Fly eggs become maggots and need to be hatched on some type of food like dead animals or trash. Then the flies would appear small and take a little time to grow. I have been swarmed by flies on my boat while not close to land. They appear like a small swarm and are mostly full grown. I did some research and found that these flies live on patches of seagrass and come to boats when you pass nearby.

the flies came from somewhere on the boat, its called a infestation from somewhere on the boat. If you have somewhere on the boat that you store rubbish mainly fruit and veggies or the scraps from that where they lay their eggs and the larva survive and once the eggs hatch you have flies. This process takes 15 to 24 days. The flies live 2 to 3 weeks and lay eggs before they die. You need to find the source of food to stop them. Loved all the sailing on this video and that little Lenny is growing so fast.

Hey there! A great non dairy ice cream to make on the boat is: 1 can coconut milk, 1 Cup fruit, 1/2 cup honey. Put all in the blender if you have one (we don't on our tris so I mash the fruit). Pour into something like a metal loaf pan and put in freezer. Stir every 10 minutes for the first hour to prevent too much crystallization. Enjoy once frozen. Sometimes I add a dash of nutmeg, maybe a bit of vanilla. Enjoy! Congrats also on what you did for Greta and Svante! You and Nikki...legends. ❤️️and soon, Happy 1st Birthday Lenny, from snowy 🇨🇦

I loved this vid, as with all of them. But I gotta say it makes me super nervous watching Riley out on the foredeck before a storm in pitch black conditions without a PFD or tether, please stay safe. I hate internet criticism, but personally as a young sailor (20) in the offshore racing world I am always conscious of the lifejacket debate, and I think a big part of young sailors being safer offshore can come from role models like you guys.

Not a biologist but I reckon those flies would been a species like mosquitoes with aquatic larvae so they would have been laid in any small pool of fresh water you had on the boat last time you were in port. Could be your drains or even a little bit of rain water pooled in your sail covers or similar. Has to be stagnant water so if you just agitate any pools you find in the first couple of days at sea you should be fine. Long time viewer, first time commenter. Love the conent, you guys make me smile.

Hi there! Love the vid! I’m a marine biologist and I had a guess about the flies. There is a genus of marine flies, Halobates, with some species living in the open ocean. If the flies weren’t coming from the boat, they may be Halobates. I’d say google a picture for comparison, but yeah that’s my two cents:) keep up the amazing videos!

Hannah (and Riley) if it helps, here's a data point for your consideration. I'm a submariner who was based out of Groton, CT and we constantly sailed past Montauk point. We would often get flies onboard when we were downwind of New York. We noticed that the majority of the species we got had an eight day life cycle and a twenty day metamorphosis period. When we got back into port we would ask the other submarines which had not gone out if they had flies and they never did (proving it wasn't something in that area). Because no cameras are allowed onboard a submarine, we never got a picture of the carcasses to compare online [security concerns - sorry can't help there]. Because we constantly clean our boats, inspect our food, take out our trash, and are submerged most of the time (driving past those canyons Elayna likes) we THINK these flies only come into our sub when we "inhale" fresh air from downwind of land. This would mean that the flies are blown out to sea or live on the ocean water. When I was stationed in Hawaii, all the scientists and historians agreed that the flies on those gorgeous islands were blown there on storm winds (proving that flies can live through high winds and still procreate afterwards). We have used these data points to theorize that the blown on the wind or live on the ocean hypothesis has merit, but can not conclusively prove/disprove the theory. I believe Hannah's idea of pictures to identify the genus would garner much more information about where they came from, but it's my personal thought that the NY state pet just likes to take wild rides on off-shore winds. Hope that data point can help someone figure this out for you.

Rylie was eating pasta! It's called Israeli Couscous or 'Ptitim.' Ben-Gurion, the first prime-minister of Israel commissioned Ptitim as the country needed a wheat-based product to substitute for rice. It's pretty much peasants food for us, all kids grew up eating it. Now that I live in NY it's really funny to see it show up on gourmet menu's for $15 a bowl lol. But its still delish.

@Riley about the fly issue, they all "hatched" out at the same time, that's why so many flies, if it were a land reasoning one or two would show up, but that way you must have had them hidden somewhere in your boat

Re the flies - you don't suddenly get a massive swarm of full size mature flies from a hatching on a boat - they have to hatch small, then grow, and you can trace source. They definitely came from external to boat, they can live on seaweed clumps, floating rubbish or passing boats especially trawlers. I've sailed into swarms like that before 100kms+ offshore.

Think the reason for the flies is that a single fly must of come in right before you left the bahamas and laid eggs there

Lenny's (the world's cutest little sailor) biting issue: you are doing the exact *RIGHT* thing. At about his age, my pediatrician told me: when he bites you, don't bite him back -- I was thinking: my angel will never bite -- 1 day later: crunch !! -- this is step 2, and he will scream bloody murder, but now's the time to teach him about time out -- next time he bites (because he's teething and gets your instant attention) -- tell him firmly no, put him down in his table chair with no books/toys; make no contact with him whatsoever; turn your back on him and walk away, don't look at him; let him scream -- for 1 minute. Then go get him and tell him: you were in time out because you bit mommie -- then hug him -- next time he bites, do the exact same thing: he'll catch on pretty quick. Time out is the best discipline method, in my opinion, but you have to be brave the first few times because it's heart breaking (and tiring; as he ages, every time he gets out of the timeout spot, you have to just put him back in -- it's exhausting!!! But there will come a time -- whether on the boat or land -- that he will need to follow your immediate instruction, so you have to be the alpha parents now and if he doesn't follow that direction, the consequences are immediate -- also, as he ages, don't use his room as a time out spot; his room should be a place that is fun and peaceful and where he will feel safe. My babysitter taught me the best time out spot -- in front of the fridge, because they "snot and cry" -- southern expression -- and get sticky dirty hands all over your walls; the fridge you can wipe clean. He is such a lucky little boy (not to mention adorable; I swear he keeps getting cuter and cuter) to have two parents who love each other. He was created in love (or Barry White, or a combo --ha --my child was created with too much tequilla !!) -- and he is being raised with so much love. Riley reading to him; glad you got it on tape. I wish every child could have that. I only leave these little tips because someone helped me so much, and I've been a subscriber since the beginning and wish you both so much happiness. I didn't know zip when my son launched and tips like these were invaluable. If you want me to stop, please feel free to say so. Oh, the cloud issues -- welcome to the world of chem trails. The fly issue -- I don't know what is up with that -- we are still having flies and it's Dec. 3rd. This summer was murder. I don't know if it's because the weather was so hot and we had drought -- also, maybe they are so far out, they have barges that transport trash out of NY, so you might have passed a trash barge, and a couple landed on your boat and then laid eggs and they hatched -- ugh. Fair skies, guys. Thanks again for another A-plus video.
