@@markfisher6404 You aren't hearing what he is actually saying: he is asserting that which he believes Ukraine should do -- and is repeating the demands of IMPERIALIST PUTIN. At the very same time that RUSSIA ILLEGALLY invaded Ukraine AND IS AT THE VERY MOMENT ENGAGED IN MASS SLAUGHTER OF CIVILIANS. And get a clue by learning HISTORY. NATO has three basic purposes: 1. To put an end to the hundreds of years of war between and among European nations. In that it has been totally successful. 2. As a defense of Western Europe against IMPERIALIST RUSSIA. 3. As the first line of defense of the UNITED STATES against IMPERIALIST RUSSIA -- "better THEY fight them THERE than WE fight them HERE". There is a young French woman who made a video tour of the D-Day cemetery in France and posted those videos online. The cemetery is laid out by country, and the United States section goes on and on and on and on and on; most of those graves are filled with young men, boys, who didn't live to see their 20th year. That is the PRICE the United States paid in stopping IMPERIALIST HITLER IN BEHALF OF WESTERN EUROPE AND the United States. I have opposed EVERY US war since Vietnam. I was the ONLY member of my high school class to speak out against that involvement and took the heat for doing so -- "draft-dodger"; "Communist" -- and refused to be silenced. I opposed the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. Saddam Hussein did not have and did not threaten to use chemical or biological weapons, or nukes. But Putin DOES have nukes, AND is threatening to use them. His nukes can reach the United States. Reality and human affairs are not perfect. The Left FALSELY bashes Obama for NOT putting "boots on the ground" in Libya -- which the majority of the US population AGREED WITH: democracy is MAJORITY rule. Instead he told Europe that Libya was in EUROPE'S front yard, not the US's. And the Left actually attacked Obama and Clinton for what happened to Gheddafi. LEARN THE HISTORY: Gheddafi was a dictator and mass murderer -- and a consequence of EUROPEAN -- not US -- imperialism and colonialism in Africa. Let's be HONEST: If a DEMOCRATIC president engages in imperialism, the Left bashes him. If a Democratic president DOESN'T engage in imperialism -- and I'm speaking also to Chomsky's IMPERIALIST selling out of Ukraine -- the Left bashes him. And if a Democratic president acts CO-EQUALLY with the US's allies, in this instance against IMPERIALIST RUSSIA, the Left bashes him. When has Ukraine tried negotiating? Ukraine was talking about retaking Crimea through force before Russia invaded. If zelenskiyy accepted a deal that didn’t include the return of Crimea which as Noam correctly points out is a non starter, the now well armed Ukrainian far right will kill him and take over the country. The US sees its strategic interest in fighting Russia until the last Ukrainian. It weakens Russia to bog them down in Ukraine. Europe will look for energy elsewhere, possibly to more US imports. And US arm manufacturers are getting even richer flooding Ukraine with weapons. What true US interest is there in a ceasefire?

Noam has the mind of an eminently reasonable and rational man; I think he stumbles a bit when delving into abnormal psychologies; he considers them from within himself. I think this is a common problem with leaders on the left; they've never been messed with much by people of this type on a personal level, because of their status and power; so they don't have a real, intense, familiar understanding of that kind of crazy. Russia had two main goals that it explicitly stated; 1. denazification of Ukraine and 2. demilitarization and ignoring the denazification part is wrong on many levels because it is how Russia justifies the war (calling it a military operation) on the first place. The denazification part weakens Chomsky’s argument that the negotiations could lead to peace for Ukraine. I don't like how during the conversation there is no mention of the Budapest memorandum, the unlawful status of the occupation of crimea, the thousands of displaced people from the donbass rebel region, so much that a referendum in the region would be pointless as everyone who doesn't want to be part of Russia have already left the region and finally, no mention of Putin's speech done just before the invasion in which he denied the right of self determination for the Ukranian people or even the existance of the Ukranian nation. Overall, this is not a balanced and complete opinion of the current situation and to make matters worse, it is smeared with a western point of view that doesn't take into account the realities of the region: Putin is a liar, he lied during the crimea crisis, he lied during the invasion of donbass, he lied when that dutch plane was shot down, he lied when he said he wasn't going to invade and with this record we cannot afford to trust Putin to uphold his words if Ukraine is to be demilitarized, otherwise we'll found ourselves on the same scenario Czechoslovakia suffered back in 1938. I agree. I am no expert or even a student of politics, however Putin has made his intentions clear time after time. He wants the old USSR back and wants to be king of. Negotiations?? How do you negotiate with a madman? Giving in the only negotiation he would accept. Going into the history of what the US has done in the past and maybe has not been sufficiently punished for accomplishes nothing. Let's deal with the here and now. You cannot sanction a country's leader without sanctioning it's people too. Maybe if the populace suffers enough they will realize that their great leader is a liar and is actually the one punishing them. Although that has not worked here. 45 is still ensnaring his rabbits.
@johanmetreus1268
@johanmetreus1268 2 года назад
There is only so much that can be discussed within the timeframe. Do note that Chomsky did not say Putin had to be involved at all, only that being a war criminal per se isn't a hindrance. Nor did he include Zelensky, as he was talking about the states Russia and Ukraine. When you say "Western", do you mean American or European? They are not the same. The suggestions Chomsky made were purely based on the positions Russia and Ukraine publicly already stated, not what is desired. That a negotiated peace is the only option for a future Ukraine is rather evident, as if Ukraine seem to threaten Russia with military conquest, Putin will press the red button and if Russia seem to destroy Ukraine with military force, there is no button to threaten Russia with. So there are two fundamental questions here: How to arrange a negotiation with both countries actively seeking a resolution, and how to ensure that such agreements are kept? Only after those two questions has been answered is there any point looking into details of what an agreement should contain, as Kremlin can simply not be taken on their word or signature.

This feels very upsetting and complicated. A story of rules and actions through time. What is the best and most correct rule? When is a rule a violation of another person's freedom. ? Does the western world really possess freedom when its society must abide by the rules of capitalism and consumerism? Is its rules a violation of a persons freedom ? Is there a day beyond clothing and feeding and sheltering ourselves when we are free to live ? Or have our lives been mortgaged to capitalism ? What person isn't finding the money to pay their rent or pay for their house? it shouldn't be a lifetime's activity to pay for the house you live in. Nothing about the world makes sense to me. a person should be able to build their own home and live in it and not keep paying for it for the rest of their lives. Thats freedom. Most people are working 9-5 every day , and they don't really know why. ..except they have to keep paying the bills. Is that freedom ? are they following their hearts ? What free time does anyone actually have ? I don't think we live in a free society. Its a shame that we live , everywhere, Russia included, ...in a toxic masculine viewpoint , that can only understand itself as in opposition. In the British govt ..there is really a 2 party system. ..one acts and one opposes. In the judiciary system ...one brings a claim and another opposes. all of these systems encourage and require conflict. why do we require conflict ? and why do we set up systems where conflict is the only available option ? Its very sad...that we live in times where our route for expression is corralled into conflict. We deserve better. We deserve the chance to honour our feelings and honour our ability to express those feelings, without seeking recompense. To be heard. Not fight. not win. What winning will make up for a loss? We can't make our world better by rules. I think we should listen to our hearts and what our hearts need. our world now is ending. we must find our hearts now to navigate us back into life.

I disagree. Think about some of the things that had the most profound impacts on quality of life since 1900…medical, electronics and automotive. I’d strongly argue that America’s technical leadership has improved the lives of the world many times over. Do these products have to be purchased? Yes, mostly. Does this mean the world is ‘stealing’ from the world? Hardly… Along with the bad of capitalism comes an insane amount of good that many forget to give credit for. America is not Russia, forcibly subjecting its culture on those they interact with. Sure, the US tries to get others to follow a democratic track of government, but few can dispute that autocracies are better than democracy for the world as a whole. The US has been/is far from perfect but they sure have done a lot of good for everyone, yet many love to villain-ize the US because American values put autocracies in danger. I’m open to hearing a counter-argument on this.

@@a2xd94 As you wish: Banana-republic. The thing pulled into question is not whether inventions done in USA has been of benefit to the world, but that the US administration actively is seeking political and military supremacy to support economical supremacy as well. Yes, USA puts autocracies in danger, but are just as likely to put democracies in danger as well, the obedience to Washington the determining factor followed by the weakness of the target.

@@johanmetreus1268 I think it would be silly to think that the superpowers would NOT seek to align others with themselves. What examples do you have of the US endangering democracies in their attempts to further Pax Americana?

Weakening the Russian army and its economy so that it cannot sustain any further invasions is appropriate. Even if it means fighting to the last Ukrainian.
