I remember my first time playing the game, these dudes seriously impressed me and I was very very sad on future playthroughs that this was the only place they spawned. They would have been super fun to use on the ark and cortana.

Yeah, even if you drop one later in the mission, it will turn around and kill you. It's a detail I absolutely love in the game.

I think the reason they deal so much damage to the player is because Bungie didn't make a version of them being actual enemies you're meant to fight. Other allies, like marines and Elites, will also basically one-shot you if you go berserk and start killing them
