I have yet to see someone does that G5 Belt like her in the climax of the song out of all the different singers that attempted this song. Julia is the BEST.
It's been 84 years and I'm still mad we don't have a properly recorded version of this. I don't have the authority to say it's the best version of the song, but it's my favorite. Julia is incredible and SO underrated.
It is a shame that she never really got the recognition she deserves. She is such a talent and her voice might not be the highest, or most powerful voice out there, but her emotions and her playfulness she puts into every role is on a different level . Her version of Elphaba in Wicked is still the best version out there. And lets not even start talking about The Wild party where she just blows everybody away.
Her voice is hugely powerful. This is a rehearsal performance, so she's not on mic. Even so, you can still hear 95% of her voice and lyrics with the orchestra behind her while wearing no mic. I'd say that's a pretty big voice.
I worked on "Ragtime" in North Carolina with Julia as "Mother" -- and her "Back to Before" was out. of. this. world. You can still find it lurking around here; it gives me chills!
@Marcus Vincent She has a solo album called "I'm Not Waiting", it's fantastic! She is of course also on the cast album for the Andrew Lippa "Wild Party", in which she starred as Queenie in its original Off-Broadway run, and she's incredible on that! Definitely check those out :)
I've watch this many times and all the other Nobody's Side videos out there. Julia's version is the absolute best and this is just a rehearsal, which I think is actually better than her performance version. Her acting is perfect. She is right into it from beginning to end. You can feel the sexuality of the song. The simple on-beat hair flip at 2:37 is sublime.
Loved that hair flip and the hand move from "take a little love where you can" and pretty much everything about this performance. She is brilliant! I also agree that this was better than the actual performance although her actual performance was excellent too.
Except for that wailing at the very end this is by far the best performance I've heard since Elaine Page. Very emotional and love the body language. Cudos!
@@Sofi-ji4jl I don't think he means the G5. That's fantastic and right on pitch. It's her line at 3:01 near the end. It's an improvisation she chose that doesn't really work. It sounds shrieking and flat. Other than that single phrase, the rest of the performance is stellar.
