I was really happy to see some of the bit players I have a soft spot for finally getting updated portraits after so many games of reusing an old ugly portrait, especially Wakizaka Yasuharu(this guy got one of the best glow-ups in the history of NA, lol.) There's still others who could really use an update, but I content myself with using some of the male faces in the officer edit for some guys like Asahina Yasutomo(while his portrait's not that bad, it's wild that one of the Imagawa's strongest generals is still using his RtP face when guys like Udono Nagateru got an update) and Omura Sumitada.
Major props for compiling all the new portraits into this format, its a very helpful video! Sadly, no matter how much I look at the Awakening portraits, I always find more of them that I dislike than those I do like. I'm just not a fan of the artistic direction they've taken the portraits (and arguably the series) in as a whole.
Yeah, I feel you. A lot of the portraits have such defined smoothness to the skin, some even have pink/purple-ish hue on their face, making it feels like they underwent plastic surgery. The new portraits were drawn so cleanly that seeing them against the extremely blurred out background gives off a sense of uncanny, and it doesn't help that a lot of the new portraits have a lot of empty space to them and the backgrounds are so brightly colored that you can't help but drawing your eyes to the background. A lot of the expressions are also rather off-putting with Muneshige, Kanbei and Naoie being way too smug for my liking. A lot of the above problems aren't very noticeable in-game due to the small size of the portraits or because the backgrounds being transparent, but seeing the actual portraits as they were drawn, I can't help but feel something were lost with the new art style/direction.
Some excellent insights into the portraits that really do explain the uncanny and excessive feeling they have. Speaking of Naoie, I really do miss the pink dressed design he had from Iron Triangle and SoI. The more 'attractive' and black clad look they've gone for him now just feels far more devoid of character, even if I can see what they're going for with it.
Some of the portraits, especially the Hojo ones look pretty bad. They look way to anime and race neutral for me. All the women look like supermodels when we know that isn't the case in real life for the majority of women involved in the history this game is covering. Additionally the eye contacts all of these Japanese people seem to have bought are weird.@@WangLang1313
I play a lot Shogun 2 and Total War Three Kingdoms. Nobunagas Awakening looks really good but I think after some hours this game will be boring. I like the sengoku jidai time and know a lot about it, but Nobunagas Awakening has boring battles (not like Three Kingdoms or Shogun2). To interact with other clans, build your land and interact with the characters seems good but without great battles it will very fast boring. My question is, should I buy this game? I am really scared that after I play few hours it will be annoying and no fun. What do you think about this game?
Hm... That depends on what you find boring about Awakening's battle. If it's because of the limiting troops movement in battle, or the inability to organize different unit types, then those are not exactly Awakening's main appeal. If you like planning units coordination, manipulating alliances, utilizing different clan policies and officer traits to make the best offense/defense, then Awakening would offer you those things, but if not then it's kinda hard to sell you the game. Have you tried any Nobunaga's Ambition game before? And what did you like or dislike about those games?
