Susan Morrow (Amy Adams) reveals her estranged husband dedicated and titled a novel after his nickname for her, “Nocturnal Animals”. As Susan becomes obsessed with the story, she swears she sees more than just a baby on her co-worker’s monitor….
Film Synopsis:
Academy Award® nominees Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal star in this haunting romantic thriller from acclaimed writer/director Tom Ford (A Single Man). Susan (Amy Adams) is living through an unfulfilling marriage when she receives a package containing a novel manuscript from her ex-husband, Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal). The novel is dedicated to her but its content is violent and devastating. Susan cannot help but reminisce over her past love story with the author. Increasingly she interprets the book as a tale of revenge, a tale that forces her to re-evaluate the choices that she has made, and reawakens a love that she feared was lost. Also starring Armie Hammer and Michael Shannon, NOCTURNAL ANIMALS is a thriller of shocking intimacy and gripping tension.

Gave me a heart attack on a first watch (mostly because you're not expecting a jumpscare in a non-horror film)

I wish Tom Ford would make more films. He has talent as a director.

I like almost every part of this film but something that doesn't normally get mentioned is what a great job hair & makeup did. The look of Amy Adams' makeup is just wrong, it's subtle, but it creeps me out every time. It's another component to a great performance.

Yeah like how her lipstick or whatever is supposed to do the thing where it makes her lips seem fuller but it does it too much, and in a weird way. Like her character's application of it was just... off

Amy Adams can go from sweet and innocent to a completely different person. Another film she was good in was The Woman In The Window where she played a recluse.

The color code in this movie!!!! The reds, the greens, the whites, the blues!!! None of them stand as glaring contrasts of one another. They work in harmony!

I absolutely love this film but I wanted Amy’s character to have a bit softer surrounding. The office. The home. Her clothes. Her soft dialogue. Her makeup. It’s all so hard. So edgy. I get it. It shows her superficiality and disconnection but it’s so harsh and so soulless that it’s unbelievable. I want to believe she is this heartless uncaring rich snob, but it doesn’t work. Especially in this scene. Someone like her is not that candid all of a sudden. And the red walls and bare, quiet office is just not realistic. And that makes me feel like I’m not seeing a real person. Rather, an actress trying really hard to play this empty and dreary woman.

that’s interesting. i see in her present character a scared coward who wears bold and aggressive colors that she can’t quite live up to, like it was forced upon her. it fits her story well - she had her intuition right about edward’s way of life (softer, less strong-willed), but chose her mother’s way out of fear. it’s why her new life doesn’t fit her as much because it isn’t true to who she wanted to be.

I wanted to like this film so much but it was such a disappointment after the excellent A Single Man.

This scene made absolutely no sense being included, doesn’t match the style, tone, direction or even genre. Just added extra disappointment to having already wasted the talent of Amy Adams by having her simply lay on a couch for 90% of the film.
@pigmiwarriorentertainment274
I disagree, I thought the two scenes back to back perfectly illustrated the varied effects of sleep deprivation. These moments, they're just for a second and you know they're not real but they elicit the same sensation in your body that a jump scare in a horror film would.

Does she see the rapist in the screen? Could that be a reference to the fact that the rapist is supposed to be a stand in for her (if we agree that the novel is a metaphor for Edward's life, and that the murder of his wife and daughter parallels her abortion and abandonment of Edward)? In a sense, when she peeks into the screen, she just sees a reflection of herself/the rapist. I think this scene is perfect. These are Speculations, but there you have it.
