The ending - Edward proved to Susan that he is a talented writer. The book is 19 years later which indicates he has been tormented for a long time - Edward is damaged and never remarries. Edward will never forgive Susan for the divorce and the abortion - she is dead to him.

I just still cannot believe Tom Ford directed this film. A fashion designer created such a cinematic masterpiece.

Jake Gylenhaal is one of the rare actors whom I don't see as Jake Gylenhaal in the movies, but the character he is portraying.

One of the visual cues that stood out the most IMO was when the body's are discovered, the way they are laying was the same way that Sarah's real daughter was laying with her lover when Sarah called her...

My interpretation of the ending that Edward is dead, the “weak” Edward that Susan fell in love with has died. At the exact moment when Susan left, when she gave up all hope on him, she symbolically killed Edward. At the same time, as Susan symbolically killed off Edward, her spiteful deeds have manifested Edward into a new person. He is no longer a sweet, kind-hearted and romantic fellow that stole her heart. That is why at the very last scene, he did not show up because the Edward that she fell in love with no longer exists. This is further validating by the last scene because if it was really Edward, he would not plot such a petty and cruel revenge like that just to prove her wrong. However, the new Edward has achieved his ultimate revenge, proving her wrong in every aspect, and leaving her alone to rot for the rest of her remaining life. When she broke up with him, we see a green car in the background, in the novel, we also see him driving the green car that inevitably caused his torment. At the end, she was wearing a green dress, signifying that she will live a life of torment just like Edward did when she left him.

This is another one of those films whose brilliance I only recognise when I have its meaning explained to me :/

This movie seriously deserves a lot more attention since it is an absolutely underrated masterpiece.

Someone else finally said it! Jake Gyllenhaal is so underrated! This was the best performance of his career in my opinion. Some of the best acting I've seen period. His breakdown after Bobby kills Lou, it doesn't get ANY better than that. Not to mention the skill it must take to play two characters, not being able to devote yourself entirely to becoming one person. He and DiCaprio are the two best actors we've seen.

This scene portrays relationship in these times so well. I love that line Jake Gyllenhal says - dont walk away from what you have, you may never get it again. So true!

By the way, one more thing that I noticed: The part when he and the cop (his sub-conscience) encounter the villain, sitting outside his home, naked, laughing while taking a dump, sub-conscience asks the villain to come with them, and the villain says: "Would you mind looking away?" and the sub-conscience says: "As much as I would like to, but I can't". I think here it is referring to the part when he catches his wife and the new boyfriend doing the abortion outside the clinic, not taking his eyes off them even for a moment, and watching every single thing. Both his wife and the boyfriend doing nasty things (abortion vs. taking a dump/wiping it) while being happy (hugging each other vs. laughing on the phone), but he does watch everything, although he would have liked not to.

This movie was awesome, it took me a while to understand that the book he wrote was a metaphor for how their relationship turned out. And in the end he stood her up for sweet sweet revenge. Although i like that he grew balls and proved her wrong by standing her up, i lowkey was hoping she would walk out to the parking lot where he would be waiting and swoop her off her feet, but hey she deserved it anyway, she really did turn out like her mother

This ending messes with your head. Its that feeling you only get once in a blue moon. Its such a real way to end this...no fairy tale Hollywood ending where people are forgiven. It's just spite and revenge...and you watch a broken soul continue to drown in her own broken life

What I think is…. 1) Tony's wife and daughter have a very strong resemblance to Susan, that means they are parallels. 2) The lost of the girls in the family represent the lost of Susan and his child (by abortion), something very cruel if you ask me. Susan cheated on Edward. Obviously Tony stands for Edward. 3) What does the gang represent? They are shown as ordinary, ignorant and cruel, they mostly represent the hidden relationship between Susan and Hutton. In their several stages... Turk is the set up, Lou is the hidding, Ray is the abortion. One crueler than the other. 4) I'm more curious about Bobby, it's like the part of Edward who wants to discover the whole shit and bring justice, it's the part of Edward that still cares, but it's dying, it's not gonna last too much. 5) Now, the end. Tony faces Ray (Edward faces the fact Susan cheated on him and killed their unborn child) and kill him, but in the way he's changed, he's no longer the man he used to be, he's broken beyond any repair and he ends up dead. That means he got over the whole shit, but he's no longer "The good man" as he's usually pointed along the movie. 6) And the main reason to believe Edward is not a good man anymore is the revenge scheme he's obviously putting on Susan, sending her the novel, be in brief touch with her, and finally not showing up in the very anticipated dinner with her. He cares shit about her and he's no longer a nice guy. Source- Reddit

The idea that the character of Ray in the novel was nothing but a metaphor for the 'changed' version of Susan(from Edward's perspective) became clear to me as soon as the flashback scene where Susan reveals her abortion to Walker came up as this proved Edward and Susan never had a child together. Immediately I understood that Ray's evilness is the artistic equivalent of Susan's affair and infidelity and Ray killing the daughter in the story is the deranged metaphor for the abortion. Ray calling Edward 'weak' only underlined the validity of the theory even further.

I don't buy the suicide theory at all. The film is a revenge flick. He, through his strength in writing, has made her become so emotionally invested in him that to stand her up at the end is really going to hurt her. It is as you said. This is my favourite Amy Adams film to come out this year and I reckon it will be pretty high on my 2016 top 10 list.

I loved Laura Linney's portrayal of Susan's mother. She was only onscreen for twenty-minutes but her regal bearing really made an impression on me.

The ending was not open ended at all. It was the perfect conclusion. The look on her face when she realized what has just happened was haunting and perfectly directed.

Not sure if anyone pointed this out but: Ray is wearing GREEN boots when he awakes in the room before his "show down" with Jake G. Which goes back to the green car and Susan is wearing a GREEN dress at the end.

The ending was Edward's revenge. He made her feel sorry for herself and for her life that she chose over him. He also made her feel lonely, and how it feels to be abandoned. And the cherry on top is that he wrote a novel about it, a big slap on the face because when they were together, she thought he wasn't creative enough.

I 100% agree that Tom Ford is one of the strongest directors right now. People don't give him nearly enough credit, probably because they don't know how to watch his films to enjoy them. Don't look at them like at stories - look at them like at paintings. They are actually more designed than directed, with lots of symbolism that is relevant not only for a given scene but for the film as a whole.

The journey for revenge is a symbol for how he had spent his own life after they split. Angry, bitter and becoming someone he didn't recognize. Hence, pouring it all into this story he had sent her. He never remarried, never had children so killing off the character in the end was symbolic of how he felt in his life after their child was taken from him and he had lost her. Like he had died himself and knew that his weaknesses were part of the reason he had lost them both.... And a way of telling her that this was how he had felt over how she had left him.....he was helpless, lost and weak......

It also points out the utter realization Susan has when she sits in the restaurant in the last scene. Her realization that she threw away someone and a relationship that she had, based on her false beliefs. Realizing in that moment that she made a huge misake and he is no longer there to return to her. When he tells her you don’t just walk away from love , it’ doesn’t just come back easily- these are the words that end up unfortunaetely being Susan’s reality. It;s akin to the quote sometimes you really don’t know what you have until it’s no longer there…….. Maybe in the end he longer had anything to say to her. It was said in his novel and she had a new husband who would never lover her , the way Edward once had.

I was shocked angry and stunned when the movie ended. I was bawling like a baby when this video ended. I need the book immediately.

Plus the Police car which went down the Highway while they were stuck with a flat tyre was the reference for their relationship which was falling apart and the police car was some hope which they tried to regain but failed miserably

For me It's an obvious metaphor about love (quote: When you love someone, you work it out. You don’t just throw it away. You have to be careful with it, you might never get it again.) and how Love can be destroyed by ego, sin, materialism, narcissism and immaturity. This movie has strange similarities with what I'm passing through, maybe this is why I interpreted this way: Edward and Susan had a long passion for each other, they finally meet again and quickly started a relationship that ended up in marriage. It is implied that they were Catholic, and for Catholics marriage is sacred and for life. Love in Catholicism (agape) is teached in a very meaningfull way and it's quite beautiful, It's clear that Edward knew the importance and meaning of love, he was egoless, he cared about people around him and he tried to help Susan to understand this, but she didn't care and ultimately labeled him "sensitive". She cared only about her. So the movie goes on in a full metaphor about how her egocentric behaviour and sinful acts led her to destroy him. She utterly raped and killed Love from him, like the gang did with Tony wife and daughter, and in this process he felt unable to do something, he wanted to react but could't do it, like in real life when people do unexpected things against you and your'e the last to know. With all this torment in his head (Edward) writes Tony trying over the years to catch the gang monsters, and when he does catch the "leader" Ray he ask's "what they felt, what they said, if they knew, if they hurt!". It's like Edward confronting Susan about him, because she never really cared about how Edward felt, what he could said or that he knew (that she was pregnant) or if he was hurt! Is clear that Susan/Ray still care only about her (egocentric personality) and that she thinks to have the "right" to punish people who "wrong her", in the 'novel' this is in the last scene with Ray and in "reality" is her going to the restaurant. In the end she was miserable, alone, lost, with a cheating husband who didn't care about her and maybe she realized how evil she was and how she throw away the love she had. Edward couldn't feel love anymore (one of the worst things a human can endure) because of this immense trauma as a young man, so he was no longer "weak". They both lost.

When I first saw the movie, I was so confused. I kept thinking about it until I eventually had to look up a meaning for it and I honestly have to say that I am not disappointed. I am deeply in love with the hints dropped in this movie. Where is the Oscar???

I absolutely LOVED this movie and I thought the ending was magnificent. Great video.

The end is so satisfying from a standpoint that Susan got what she deserved and got it from Edward. But it is more layered, it is sadder! A wide-eyed, positive and most importantly a good man is robbed of all of his virtues and in order to survive has to become what gave him the pain in the first place. It is life full circle. In real world too, there is little to no place for sensitive people, they are deemed week and often used and taken a shit on, until they turn themselves into the very opposite of their core self. Sad, but so real and heartbreaking.

This film is an artistic masterpiece. We have a brilliant cast, a brilliant director and a perfect story line that many people can relate to. It shows the antithesis of creative and neurotic minds through the portrayal of Amy Adams character, Susan. It really makes you think, and what Amy said that the start about it being a cautionary tale is so true. Susan’s character is a strong character with a good mask that she hides behind. The fact that she gave up her true love for someone that doesn’t love her but has a lot of power and money really shows the human condition. Films like this are priceless, after watching this film it made me think of other brilliant films like ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’ and ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’. The moment when Susan at the end of the film realises the extent of her cruel decision was the perfect ending, you can see the emotion in her eyes as she is filled with existential dread. Jake’s character, Edward Sheffield was a brilliant. Two of the best actors of our time. Roberto Andes would’ve been so much better if either Rami Melik or Christian Slater had played it. And Ray Marcus would really suit Jared Letto too. Toms message of not throwing away people you love is such a strong one that we can all relate to. Truly an admirable director. And the director of photography was perfect for the role. The colour tones in this were perfect, the grain and grit really boosts the overall experience and weight of the film, the colour tones are just as important as the story itself. The way they have used Photography and Cinematography is perfect. Truly a flawless film, I can’t think of anything that I didn’t like in this. I would love to read this in a book.

This movie just got released yesterday in Mexico, so I bought a ticket without doubt. it was a gripping and harsh film, very beautiful and great. love it. but I didn't understand the metaphors, your video just made me love it even more. thanks

The ending was pretty simple IMO. He sent her the book to prove to her that he actually was capable of writing a novel, which she never believed. In reading the novel she comes to the realization that she ultimately made the wrong decision to listen to her mother & leave him, that albeit her success she isn't happy with the life she is living and that she still has feelings for him and only pretends to love her current husband. Him standing her up in the end was essentially her finally admitting all this to herself and thinking wanting to make things right but realizing she'll have to sleep in the bed she's made.

You know that phrase every single aunt posts on Facebook "Success is the best revenge"? I think this is it. He became strong, successful and got over her, and now he is better than her. Not showing up to the dinner was just the cherry on top and she realized it in the final shot of the movie.

Tom Ford really is proving himself to be a great filmmaker. Hope to see more films like these that spark conversation among film lovers and exploration of themes such as revenge, regret, choices, etc.

Aaron Taylor Johnson was amazing in this film.

One of my favorite aspects: The Theme of powerlessness. As you explore ted's mind through his novel, you understand how powerless he felt when Susan aborted their child and left him. He does not know if he could have prevented her from aborting and leaving him. Maybe he was too weak and should not have let her go. In the novel you can see his uncertainty whether or not he could have done something, when Ray shouts "Your wife wants to see you!" and he stays hidden. Ted clearly felt weak and powerless, when Susan aborted his child. At the end of the novel he seems to find his power. His kills ray on his own. Maybe his finding of power can be seen in Ted, when he finally becomes a successful writer. But his power does not seem to have brought him a lot. In the novel he dies in the desert and for Ted you cannot easily say where he is at, but I have the feeling that he feels that a part of him is dead, and that nothing can change that, so he does not even meet up with Susan.

I stumbled upon the preview of this film recently despite the fact that it came out many years ago. After watching the trailer I pulled it up on Netflix and watched the whole movie. There was quite a bit of back and forth scenes from the present to the past along with unusual twists and turns. This is not your basic cookie cutter film and I found it to be quite fascinating and gripping. Jake Gyllenhaal is a very powerful and incredibly talented actor, however, he never seems to pick a good enough characters in films to showcase his hard charging acting skills. It seems all the characters he plays are those whose parts are always held back from from showcasing his full potential. It's my contention that if he had the right part in the right film, he could really knock it out of the park. All in all I found this to be a great film and I highly suggest it to those who haven't seen it yet! 📽️

Never actually considered suicide as a theory for ending. It seems he just left her hanging. He was "sensitive" as Susan describes him, but he wasn't "fragile". And ones he build the strength in him, he made his revenge. Holy shit I love this movie

I love this explanation, it opens doors to many other meaning. For example, ever time a piece of the story affects Susan it envokes a memory in her past relationship with Edward and Ford shows this effortlessly through the editing. This is where the written word has more power than the visual as it allows you to potray,visualise and interpret the text to suit your inner feelings.

How come no one's talking about the music in the last scene. How it is initially hopeful, rising to a crescendo; but as she realizes that he's not coming, the music stops abruptly. That along with her minute expressions really hit home just how hard his revenge hurt her.

With the passage of the movie moments, Susan begins to link the events of the story with the events of reality that Edward wrote about himself to realize that the fictional character is Edward when the character is dead and the pain caused by her.For moments, the sparkle returns to her eyes, as she remembers how she felt when she was between his embrace in bed and preparing to meet him. She touched where the ring was and how her gaze changed to feel disappointed when he did not attend. Here we know the secret of the sadness and misery of her mother and daughter. A choice that cost them happiness and materialism do not always bring happiness.In the end, she lost a good man. His crime was that he had a sensitive heart. In the end, it was his strength to move forward to a brighter future and to remind her of what she lost, revenge no, but pity for her current life.

Thanks for the great explanation! Saw this a couple days ago and your video really helped me to put some of the pieces together. I would add a couple thoughts on some of the symbolism: 1) There are three antagonists in each trauma; for edward its his wife, her lover, and her mother; for Tony, its the three abductors. I think the third abductor, who Tony fails to recognize when Bobby emails him the photo, is meant to represent the mother. Maybe it's Edward working out his regret that he didn't see that the mother was part of the reason he was abandoned. I think the other two abductors, Ray (the main bad guy) and bad guy #2 who abandons him in the desert, are meant to represent Susan and her new lover (the character played by Armie Hammer), although I am not sure which is which. I think the easier case to be made is the one you make in the video, which is Ray=Susan, in which case bad guy#2 represents her lover. That makes some sense because as you mentioned, Ray calls Tony 'weak', which was Susan's main complaint about Edward, and Ray's last scene talks about how he has a 'certain pride... and when someone accuses me of something, that gives me the right...your daughter accused me of being a rapist...so I showed her..." (or something like that) Maybe that's an allusion to Edward feeling like his accusation of Susan being like her mother emboldened her to behave like her mother (in a cynical, materialist way) and commit 'crime' that she did against him. I think there is a good case to be made that the gun represents the book or the writing of the book. If that's true, then Tony's shooting of Ray is Edward using the book to destroy the side of Susan he hates, or his catharsis of his hatred of her, and the book (the gun) also 'destroys' her lover (bad guy #2) in an indirect way (by breaking up her marriage), just as bad guy 2 is killed 'indirectly' (Tony can't bring himself to shoot, bobby grabs the gun and kills him). I'm still not sure all of this is meant to be so directly symbolic, but it is interesting to think of the parallels. There is another case to be made for Bad Guy #2 = Susan, and Ray = Susan's lover. Maybe its far fetched, but there are some interesting parallels there too. In the beginning of the movie, Susan mentioned that she called Edward a couple of years ago, but he hung up on her. Could this be a parallel to when Bad guy #2 comes back and calls after Tony mockingly, saying 'Your wife wants to see you' ? Tony is alone and abandoned and at that point thinks his wife may still be alive (just as perhaps a couple of years prior Edward may think Susan still love him when she phones), Tony hesitates but remains silent and doesn't answer, just as Edward remains silent and hangs up on Susan. Maybe that phone call is even what prompted the writing of the book. The scene where Bobby (Edward's unconscious?) asks Tony, "why didn't you go to them?' Tony's says he doesn't know why didn't respond and seems tortured about the decision to stay hidden. What would happen had Tony responded? They would have killed him. What would have happened had Edward taken Susan's call? It likely would have killed him emotionally.. Instead he lays low and survives, and eventually takes his revenge with the book/gun. Additionally, Bad Guy #2 is a more sympathetic character, he's played in an almost effeminate way by the actor, and he seems to be someone who was weak and influenced by the more clearly evil Ray and was just along for the ride or too indecisive to stop what was happening. Bad guy #2 abandons Tony, but the real violence is done by Ray and the other bad guy. Perhaps this is Edward wanting to blame his abandonment on the new lover and Susan's mother, rather than on her directly. Also, unlike Ray, Bad guy #2 is contrite, when Bobby holds the gun (the book) to his head he confesses and starts to say he is sorry, just as Susan becomes contrite upon reading the book. If this is right, then Ray=Susan's lover. This doesn't fit as well with the final shootout scene as the above scenario does, but it has a couple of points to recommend it. First, Ray typifies what a man may think of another man that he hates and is also jealous of. He's a kind of a feral caricature of a narcissist psychopath, the kind of person you might imagine your wife's new lover to be if he was the guy driving her to the abortion clinic. Also, in the scene where they approach Ray's house, Bobby describes Ray as having a girlfriend but having a shack where he 'takes girls that she doesn't know about...', a parallel to Susan's lover's infidelities. Another weaker parallel is that when Susan meets her lover, he bends down to pick up her pen, maybe some kind of ironic parallel to Ray 'helping' to fix the tire of the car? Finally, if the gun=book, it may help explain the scene where Tony dies. He has used the writing of the book to exorcise/destroy the specters that have been tormenting his thoughts, his hated projections of his ex-wife and her lover, just as he uses the gun to kill the two antagonists. But in doing so, he destroys the younger version of himself. That version wasn't in fact weak, it was idealistic and kind-hearted. The writing of the book, and sending it to Susan, which he knows will be devastating, was Edward's decision to 'go outside of strict procedure' (as Bobby puts it when Tony is preparing to seek revenge), by violating his initial principles of meek kindness, and in doing so, he inadvertently kills that part of himself. Maybe that's where the cross symbolism comes in as well. The cross necklace features when Tony is dying, on his wife's body, and in scenes where Susan is longing for Edward. Maybe it represents the idealism that connected them when they were young. When Susan abandoned him, she left him with nothing. His pain and revenge was all he had left. ironically, by creating the only novel he can write, which becomes in itself an act of revenge, he destroys the man she initially fell in love with, and the man she thinks is reaching out to her. Maybe that's why he doesn't show up in the end. That man doesn't exist anymore.

The whole movie was terrific - it was really dark, clever and deep but never dragging and always engaging. One of the best movies I have seen this year, possibly my third best after La La Land and Hacksaw Ridge.

This video was so well made with strong arguments! Good work, man! And the movie, man, I loved it! At the beginning of the movie, I thought it will be just another thriller but I was wrong. I loved the art and the simbolic clues in it.

Great explanation. Watched it last night and picked up on a lot of the meaning, but you helped fully clear it up. I couldn't 100% put together why he left her hanging at the end. I also didn't realize that wasn't her in the book part.
