Noel Monk interview with Jason Saulnier on August 10, 2017.
The manager who shepherded Van Halen from obscurity to rock stardom goes behind the scenes to tell the complete, unadulterated story of David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, and the legendary band that changed rock music.
Van Halen’s rise in the 1980s was one of the most thrilling the music world had ever seen-their mythos an epic party, a sweaty, sexy, never-ending rock extravaganza. During this unparalleled run of success, debauchery, and drama, no one was closer to the band than Noel Monk. A man who’d worked with some of rock’s biggest and most notorious names, Monk spent seven years with Van Halen, serving first as their tour manger then as their personal manager until 1985, when both he and David Lee Roth exited as controversy, backstabbing, and disappointment consumed the band.
Throughout Van Halen’s meteoric rise and abrupt halt, this confidant, fixer, friend, and promoter saw it all and lived to tell. Now, for the first time, he shares the most outrageous escapades-from their coming of age to their most shocking behavior on the road; from Eddie’s courtship and high profile wedding to Valerie Bertinelli to the incredible drug use which would ultimately lead to everyone’s demise. Sharing never-before-told stories, Monk paints a compelling portrait of Eddie Van Halen, bringing into focus the unique combination of talent, vision, hardship, and naiveté that shaped one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time-and made him and his brother vulnerable to the trappings and failings of fame.
Illustrated with dozens of rare photographs from Monk’s vaults, Runnin’ with the Devil is manna from rock heaven no Van Halen fan can miss.

I’ve heard several interviews on Noel Monk but I have to say this is the best one because you let him speak and don’t ever interrupt him. Noel has some very valuable insights because he knew Van Halen before they were famous, when they were just regular guys.

Noel never threw Van Halen under the bus to sell his book. He just told it like it was. Like he says, alcohol, drugs and greed took their toll on the band. While creative differences were part of the breakup, Noel's account of how callous & greedy they became towards Michael Anthony is TRUTH. Of the four members, I hold Michael in the highest regard as a person.

Noel sounds mild-mannered and laid back in this interview. You'd never think that he orchestrated one of the greatest deal's for Van Halen by renegotiating their contract with Warner Bros. Great manager, fit to be with Van Halen!

I'm reading the book now & am into 1984. I have to say I don't agree at all with some of his musical opinions. He is definitely a great business guy but musically forget it.Saying Alex is just a good drummer for example. Bullshit he's a great drummer & the recordings prove it. And also about Fair Warning not being a good album & it only being about life is tuff. Again bullshit. Just because they had to pay some radio stations to play it doesn't mean its not great. Radio can help sell an album but I've never been a fan of the people who make the dumbass decisions about what gets played. They should have been playing songs off that album anyways. Everyone knows its great.

@bumzigan

I totally agree about Alex. He seems like a prize scumbag from what I have read in Noels book as well as Sammy's, and what he, (they) did to Michael is unforgivable, but to say he was riding on the coat tails of Eddie or that any drummer could have replaced him is just not true. Alex's sound and groove as well as his creativity are a huge part of the Van Halen sound. Noel has at least acknowledged in some interviews that Michael's voice was a big contributor to Van Halen's sound and success. I still think he was the perfect bass player for VH despite Noel's comments that anyone could have done his job.

The only thing different about the other albums is that they were not as good and the only thing "weird" about that album is "Sunday Afternoon in the Park" which was fucking badass.

The book is a GREAT read, especially if you liked the early (and best) Van Halen. That said . . . Noel's voice and accent is an acquired taste. Very tough to listen to his interviews. But make no mistake, this is probably the best book on Van Halen.

@@monmixer Yes, you’re right. I saw them in 2007, and it really left a bad taste in my mouth. I looked up to Eddie my whole life (and still do in many ways). He is the main reason I started playing, and why I started getting serious again after his passing. And I realize he was just in a bad place at that time. So I don’t blame him, was just a shame to see. Addiction is just unimaginable, I would imagine. Yeah, since I was so young when Van Halen broke up, that was the first time I was able to see them with Dave. So I really wish Michael was there. Pretty different without Michael. Although, they wouldn’t even have been on tour if it wasn’t for Wolfie. He kept his dad alive and motivated enough to power through. Until Eddie just didn’t have anything left, and it was time. It was great to see Eddie all cleaned up for several years, maybe that whole last decade before his death? Great to see him unaltered in interviews, and in person, during that time. 🎸👍🏻
