So I'm 29 years old and I watched the film last night. It's one of the best films ever made. Wow

I was not able to watch or record last weekend's Noir Alley. I can't THANK YOU enough for regularly uploading Eddie's always wonderful opening & closing remarks. I've seen "Out of the Past" many times so didn't mind missing the movie. But wanted to be sure to hear Eddie's commentary. As Cole Porter would say, "You're the TOP!" 👍🤓

This has to be the ultimate Eddie Muller critique of the ultimate Film Noir - Out of the Past - about all the intricate genius efforts by players given a chance to work their craft. Oddly enough, last night I watched the Columbo episode that included Jane Greer and wondered what she thought of her environment on this program, given that she was queen of Noir in this particular movie. It's unimaginable for us to place ourselves into 1947, just after the world was beginning to realize what had been going on in Europe under pure evil, unimaginable that the three main characters were 29 and 22 years old and could bring such misery on each other and we could witness it, and the quote of all quotes: "bring maximum moodiness" to the screen. As always, I have to add; where in the world did Eddie Muller come from with his own particular genius for bringing us into his world of Noir. Thank you NOIR FAN for bringing another brilliant video to us.

a masterpiece and one of my 8 all time favorite noirs. I'm a director myself and of all the directors I feel closest in spirit to Sam Fuller and Tourneur.

“Well, build my gallows high, baby.” is one of the all-time great Robert Mitchum lines in this movie, and one of the all-time great Noir lines.

I have seen so many scenes & clips from this film- none inspire me to watch all the way thru. Plus $3.59 to rent. J Greer does look interesting & fresh; Mitchum was born looking early middle-aged. What a conundrum! Mr Muller admires it so much - he didn't even list The Maltese Falcon in the same breath as OOTP. So I'll ponder it. 🧐

Well, it's classic noir. So that's something to consider. Even quintessential, according to some critics. Let me give you a link to a good article about the film, but it has spoilers. I'm offering it as a factor on the pro side, rather than suggest you read the article before you watch it. cinephiliabeyond.org/past-quintessential-film-noir-launched-robert-mitchum-kirk-douglas-careers/ I've been considering uploading it to this channel, but there are conflicting data whether it's in the public domain. Since getting it wrong could result in the sudden and irrevocable shutting down of this channel, I think it's best not to upload it. But it's such a popular film, I'm confident you can find it by interlibrary loan. Good luck!

@@NoirFan77 Thanks very much, Noir Fan. I may read that article. It's not so much the $4 for the film but the 1.5 hours of my time and the bad dreams I'll have about RM. Besides being such a great classic noir, what themes or characters are great? 🤔

@@ameryek.9607 You'll need an astute film critic to break that down. I can say I liked it a lot! 🤤
