Meet Carter. A non-binary, transgendered advocate for her rare diseases: Cervical dystonia, Ehler-Danlos Syndrome and Meneire’s disease. Played a game of which disease he wouldn’t want and talk about(I explain the diseases in episode). Talk about being transgendered and how it affects your psyche, but also getting treated differently for his diseases. Ask “What’s more difficult, being transgendered or having the rare diseases?” Talked about feeling different and not feeling fully part of woman or manhood. Learning about transgenderism at 13 while I thought girls were blah. Growing up with the internet helped find his true self and find others with similar experiences. Extra set of challenges of being transgendered to being a transexual which requires surgery/hormones. Finished up with the importance of the STAT Act to create an agency to distribute money towards research for rare diseases.

I'm Joe Sooch. I have Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva(FOP) where my muscles, tendons, and ligaments turn into bone. I get flares/swelling all over my body that can last a month to 2 years and bones will form thus locking my body into place. It is extremely rare with about a thousand cases on the planet. I am basically 95% disabled and permanetely in a wheelchair.

Just here to balance out the transphobia in the comment section with some positivity! Disabled people get overlooked a lot in queer spaces and trans people get overlooked in advocacy spaces too - so it’s awesome have more voices who can speak on the intersection of those experiences out there like in this interview! Great job 😄

I love this podcast/show. You're a great interviewer. I hope this takes off for you. And even if it doesn't blow up, I hope you keep at it. Your a natural host, seem super personable, and have a great sense of humor. Love it 😎🖤

It's strange how many trans people have (or believe they have/are in the process of being diagnosed) EDS. I've been in the trans community for a VERY long time and it's only become a "thing" in the last 5 years or so. I've only ever heard of a couple of cis people with EDS but it seems like every other trans person has it. It will be interesting to see studies that come out about it in the next few years bc I'm sure I'm not the only person who's noticed this connection.

That would be a strange connection. Hmm

Chronic illness really does seem to run rampant throught the trans community. Its so interesting Im not the only one that has noticed this. Many of my trans friends have chronic illness including myself (I am two spirit). I guess there is a connection between emotional trauma and chronic illness.

"Non Binary, Transgendered" Heh? That don't make sense tho, does it? Wouldn't transgender logically imply you're identifying with a gender? Doesn't non-binary mean you don't identify with male, nor female gender? How can one be transgender if they are also non-binary, a gender identity that isn't solely male or female? Please make this make sense

Ok with this I’m out lol. This lady is delusional. You, a REAL disabled person, should have been able to see this and call them out for being a professional victim. Have a good life sooche.

Transgenderism is a result of hormonal imbalance in utero. It’s a physical, provable and evidently observable clinical matter. I wouldn’t call it a disability, or a disorder - as it is curable if the persons body is changed to suit their mind. The brains perception of sex is separate to what you are biologically, it’s just that a majority of the time they are in sync for most people. Let’s no be so naive now.

She also has many invisible diseases too so yes she is disabled.

Why would you care who he interviews? I don't think the interviewee called themselves disabled even once. They're just having a conversation about life. And it's interesting. Ease up.
