"The Halo is a literal ring?" I actually burst out laughing. You wouldn't know it, but the Halo Ring is literally the very first image you see when you begin the first game.

The halo ring is a weapon designed to eliminate all life in the galaxy so the flood will be deprived of their food and hopefully eventually die out of starvation.

I hope she gets to watch all of remastered Halo 1, 2 and 3 cutscenes and if she’s still interested by then 4s cutscenes then if still interested by then the Halo terminals. But Halo 2s remastered cutscenes still blow my mind and show off Halos story at its best.

The Arbiter (The Alien guy that Master Chief is friends with) is a dishonored covenant warlord who is responsible for the most amount of human death during the war. He was given a second chance by the covenant as a suicide soldier simply called “The Arbiter”. However, when the time came where everything he believed in was called into question he and his people choose to fight with humanity and free his race from the covenant.

The answer as to why Cortana chose Master Chief as a partner and what he had that none of the other Spartans did according to her, if I'm remembering correctly, "Luck."

For some context: The part you didn’t get at first was Master Chief looking at an AI docking port in his helmet because he “lost” his AI companion in the previous game who he built a deep connection with in all the previous instalments of the franchise. Halo 5 was unfortunate the game that took the story of the franchise in a direction that a lot of people didn’t like. It was made out to be something that it didn’t end up being due to rewrites and they toyed somewhat carelessly with pre-established characters. A lot of this has even rectified since and with their newest installation even some of the once hated characters from the game have become liked by fans :) Halo is such an expansive franchise. It’s so hard to capture in single trailers. I’d recommend reacting to videos that explain the events of the universe like you’ve done with other franchises.

7:29 When he rubs his thumb along that slot in the helmet, he's remembering and acknowledging the emptiness of the slot, and a piece of his soul in his lost Artificial Intelligence companion, Cortana, who sacrificed herself at the end of the last game. Arguably, she, in her limited lifespan, was more human than the Chief.

In case you were still confused, Nightfall is a movie you can rent from Amazon, not sure where else it's streaming, it's a side story that you don't need much backstory for so it's a good watch. That and Halo Forward Unto Dawn are two great Halo movies....do NOT watch the Paramount TV show. The book you described I'm pretty sure is The Fall of Reach, which is the first one so you have the basic backstory you need and can move on to whatever else. Chronologically the next book would be The Flood, but most of the books are side stories so you could pick up whatever.

That alien that you see teaming with the Master Chief is the Arbiter, probably my favorite character in the entire franchise. It'd be interesting to watch you see a breakdown of his story

If you want to watch these games as movies for the the story you can. On RU-vid for each of the games there are so called game movies. This is when someone records a playthrough of a game but then edits out most of the gameplay and only keeps the cinematic cutscenes and other parts and dialogue that are relevant to the story of the game. I think you would very much appreciate these even as a non gamer since the story of the Halo games is a huge reason why they are so loved. So if you just search Halo Game Movie on RU-vid you will get options both for Playlists as well as Videos where all of the games are merged into a single movie. And if you decide to watch them i think all of us would love it if you did Review videos afterwards.

Nightfall was a pre-Halo 5 movie. Introduced the character of Locke. You can think of the Digital Blue thing as a trailer for the entire franchise. The voice you hear near the end of the 20 year Tribute who is talking to Locke is the Arbiter, an alien character who realizes the Covenant is wrong and switches sides. The guy who says "In time I named him [Master Chief] ally, even friend" and "Sanghelios will be free!"

nightfall is a self contained show, not connected to the "halo" tv show that came out recently

Halo is by far my favourite fictional story. I would love it if you was to watch something like the entire Halo story explained.

Halo is so interesting when you get into it. The original Bungie produced Halo games left a lot of unanswered questions that made the whole Halo universe a lot more interesting.

There are two live action movies. One animated anthology movie made with multiple shorts in different animation styles. Nightfall was done as promotion for Halo: Master Chief Collection (basically Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, and eventually Halo Reach in a single game) and Halo Guardians (Halo 5), to show how one of the playable characters in Halo Guardians became a Spartan. Forward Unto Dawn was done as promotion for Halo 4 and built up the backstory of an influential background character. Halo Legends shows backstory for a lot of different things in the game universe and acted as promotion for a lot of things that started getting brought up post-Covenant War (which ended in Halo 3). Halo the show hasn't had much press since it is pretty confined to the Paramount+ steaming platform.

She would probably enjoy reading and watching all the halo lore in chronological order, also in the games you play through some of the story, and the characters WE get to make are a secondary part, they are more for like the cooperative mode of the games 👌

Halo Nightfall was a mini-series, and is available on DVD/Blu-ray, that was released before Halo 5, as Locke (Like Cage) was going to be a major character in the game.

My favourite Halo characters are Wash, The Meta and probably AI Fragment Delta. Also got a soft spot for Locus and Felix. And Sarge.

For context: Masterchief has strong fellings for Cortana (the A.I) so... hush,hush.

Halo TLDR: Highly advanced species known as forerunners created a network of "rings" known as "installations" that could completely wipe out all life (including the forerunners themselves) in an extremely large radius. They built these weapons to combat the "flood" (which are basically zombies that multiply rapidly). The rings however weren't meant to kill the flood specifically, but to instead wipe out their food so they eventually starve (flood were capable of extended dormancy, so targeting their food was the only option). In order to restore future life, they also took samples of every species (like we currently do with plant seeds), and stored them in libraries on the rings to preserve them from the blast. All those species were then returned to their proper places long after the activation of the rings (which were now completely operated by machines and AI). A very long time later, some species (alien to humans) formed a religion around the forerunners, worshipping their facilities and technology. The leaders of the covenant (hierarchs) want to activate the rings again, to "ascend" to whatever their version of valhalla or heaven is (they don't actually know exactly what the rings do, but they want to do it). The covenant later discovered humans were referred to as "reclaimers" in forerunner inscriptions, which they assumed meant humans are the successors to forerunners. This contradicted their religion, so they then proceeded to exterminate humanity. Unfortunately for the covenant, humans refer to battlefields as a "theater", so even a "death star laser" approach to a human colony yielded extremely high resistance. In the process of finding an answer to "why are these split-lipped goblins attacking us", humans discovered the rings and a bunch of history regarding the forerunners. The story at this point branches into several directions with multiple perspectives and i'm incapable of recalling all of it to include in this TLDR.

halo nightfall was a snorefest when i watched it, but it made the show with master cheeks seem like a masterpiece

Nightfall is a movie, and its not half bad. There is also a mini series called Forward onto Dawn focus around a group of young adults in a military academy.

The Luke Cage actor actually acted in a Halo Series as Agent Locke way before Luke Cage ever came out so I'm just now getting the realization that it was him lmfao. I don't know how I didn't put two and two together when I watched Luke Cage lol. Edit: also, the Halo soundtrack has always been it's own thing, like how you can pinpoint Duel of the Fates almost instantly if you know Star Wars, same sorta goes for Halo's OST(from a Halo fan's perspective of course). I think since a lot of sci-fi or space OSTs kinda sound like they are the same since they basically always all end up having much more emphasis on the orchestral aspect of the sound so I can't imagine how many OSTs do sound pretty much alike.

The alien with the ornamental armor is Thel 'Vadamee aka The Arbiter he is Master Chief's counterpart on the Covenant side, he was Master Chief enemy at one point and now a trusted ally and he is also a big badass.

In a nutshell, the halo rings were made to combat the flood (a parasite that feeds on living hosts) by basically deleting all life in the universe with the hope that the flood would starve to death, then eventually remake all life in as close of fashion as possible to the original. (Spoiler: The Flood survived)

Halo: nightfall was a miniseries made to promote a character for an upcoming game, it was pretty decent. There's also a live-action halo movie called Forward Unto Dawn that's low budget but VERY good. And then there's the recent halo tv show that's.....really not good....don't bother.

Halo forward onto dawn is a live action movie to tell a characters story for halo 4 Halo nightfall a live action series/movie to tell a characters story in halo 5. They were both used as promotions for the next game coming out and told the backstory for new characters in those games.

You should watch all the trailers especially the live action ones

IDK how they might stand up to copywrite strikes, but there are ample videos on youtube that collect all of a game's cutscenes together into a single video. The gameplay it'self often left out, but all the video segues together can be close to a narrative or mini movie. A possible way to satisfy some curiosity about plot if you don't have time to play the actual game.

I highly recommend Halo: Contact Harvest. It introduces the Covenant, the main antagonists in the series, and serves as an excellent starting point to the series.

Just watching trailers doesn't really help understand the stories or what these games are really about. I mean they're really meant to be played, but with the more story driven ones like Halo, I def recommend looking up the "movies", which are the games edited down so you just get the story with a little gameplay. Really gives you the feel for what it's about.

Halo is essentially a ring world constructed by an ancient race known as forerunners. The forerunners made this as a super weapon to wipe out all life to prevent the spread of a ravenous hive mind called the flood “those tentacle monsters you saw” who consume all life and are practically unstoppable. Most of the franchise revolves around the stories of these ring worlds.

How to explain this without it being an entire essay. About 100,000 years before the events of the game a highly advanced alien race called the Forerunners were in a galactic war with a parasitic entity called the Flood. As they were losing this war they came to the conclusion that the only way to defeat them is to deny them their sustenance and thus created 7 Halo rings to annihilate all sentient life the galaxy (Afterwards they re-seeded the planets with their original species through automated means). The covenant (aliens) worship the Forerunners like gods and believe activating the Halo rings will kick off their "great journey". The big tentacle monster is the "gravemind", the central brain of the Flood hivemind who forges a temporary alliance with both the Chief and the Arbiter (alien in grey, samurai like armor) to stop the rings from being activated. There are many, many things I am glossing over but this should at least give a decently clear look into the power dynamic and overall story of the Halo universe.

The HALO Series was phenomenal... it is very faithful to much of the Game Lore, and you should definitely give it a watch! 😁

The Master Chief, Spartan John-117 is a Spartan-II commando and protagonist of the Halo Franchise, Spartan-IIs are Superhumans or Human Super Soldiers that fought to protect Humanity from the Covenant, who fear them as Demons and rivals the Elites, reptilian lizard-like humanoid aliens and Brutes, gorilla humanoid aliens and Hunters, Worm-like creatures joined together in a suit of armor with a canon. The Covenant Empire is an alien faction which consists of 8 different alien species; Elites, Brutes Hunters, Grunts, Jackals, Drones Engineers and Prophets. The Covenant waged war against Humanity called the Human-Covenant War and wanted to wipe them out but Humanity's faction the UNSC, United Nation Space Command sent the Spartan-IIs to deal with the alien threat, so the Spartan-IIs were what stood between the Humanity and extinction but the Covenant had the advantages in space battles due to superior technology but the UNSC, weaponry and technology were evenly matched and fought the Covenant for almost 3 decades with Humanity winning and the Covenant Civil War called the Great Schism dividing the Covenant into the Loyalists and Separatists with half the Elites, Grunts, Hunters, Engineers, some Jackals, Drones and Brutes stayed loyal to the Prophets while the other half rebelled against the Covenant betraying the Prophets and the Great Journey and these Separatists were lead by the Arbiter Thel Vadamee, the Will of the Prophets and their trusted right and former Supreme Commander. The Arbiter's rebellion allied with their most hated enemy, Humanity themselves and so the Covenant were with the help of Humanity, the Separatists defeated the Loyalists and the UNSC defeated the Covenant winning the War but both sides lost a majority of their forces alike.

The reason the rings "look like earth on the inside" is because they are essentially giant space stations. The reason you would pick a ring-shape for your space station is actually pretty simple to understand: You can simply spin it to create artificial gravity, as the you are pushed against the inside of the ring. Not unlike real concepts of NASA, albeit on a bigger scale. This, incidentally, is what separates science fiction from science "fantasy". In star wars you just don't ask why gravity doesn't exist; you ask why they wrongfully categorize this piece of fantasy fiction as "sci-fi"...

Hey I can't recommend enough that you read the Halo novels if you ever want another few books to read. I think from that brief scene you described was the training events from The Fall of Reach book. That would mean you read the first book of the "original series" (The Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx) which those books align with the stories of the first and second Halo video games. I read those as a teenager and they're great.

The Halo book that you read is Halo: The Fall of Reach. It's one of the best books i've ever read. I read it in a week, I just couldn't put it down. My profile picture is Spartan B-312, Noble 6 from the game Halo: Reach.

If you were wanting TV show/Movie halo content then the Halo Legends show could be interesting to peak at. Kind of like marvels what if each episode is a different story

the Halo TV show had practically nothing to do with the games so don't worry about it. The producers even said that it was part of its own Timeline seperate from the main Halo universe that contained the games and books.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, one day, you should watch the cinematic compilations for the halo franchise. It'd be a long video but I would happily watch them all over to see you get a fuller understanding of the story. Halo has done some incredible world-building in its run, and as a writer I think you'd really appreciate it.

A few good book that I’d recommend are the first three Mass Effect and Dragon Age books and Dead Space Martyr, the first Dead Space book.

So for the first one, it is for a live action mini series that was created to release just before one of the games to build up hype. It's not the show you are referencing, but it is a live action halo show

Halo: the fall of reach. Yes, love that book. really helps set the stage for the franchise and I love the theme of 'we are monsters making greater monsters'. P.s. If anyone is interested skip the next book it just recites the first game and the game is better, play that, then book three and wiki any minor details.

Honestly, I felt the same way about the music reminding me of generic Star Wars/StarTrek-like music. The main theme and most of the games (and most iconic) music was composed by Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, both of whom were not included when Microsoft took control of the Halo IP, and the new music sounds really generic to me, with the exception of when they just remix the old iconic music. Not saying the music is bad... all the time.. but it certainly doesn't hit the same. I can't imagine buying and listening to the soundtrack like I used to (And still do)

Allow me to be the eight or nine millionth watcher to say, "I just wish I could give you a few explanations along the way, like I do for my niece or little sister." But seriously, play the whole Halo saga on easy mode, or watch a lets play, or a super cut that tells the story. There are SO MANY excellent and epic lines to enjoy. And the story doesn't get super weird until the most recent few. I just wouldn't recommend trying to digest the early story and that weirdness all at the same time. As always, rock on and geek out.

Just binged watched the show yesterday. Had never played the games and didn't know anything about the lore or the universe prior to watching it. And I found the show to be pretty good, well worth watching. Will be waiting for season 2 now. Whenever there's an adaptation of something, there will be so-called "fans of the franchise" complaining and hating because the show is not how they wanted it to be or because it differs from the source material. I don't think their opinion of the show is representative of how the general audience actually like it, but since these people are the most vocal, you will mostly hear bad things about the show even though it may be pretty good.

If you like science fiction novels halo has over a dozen novels you can read to get the majority of the story. They're phenomenal

1 month late, but whatever. U know now, that the Halo is a weapon of galactic scale, the 7 Halos (designated alpha, beta, gamma, delta etc) together destroys the milky way's whole sentient life, depriving the flood of their food. (like Tyki said). The concept the Halo rings are based of, are called Ringworlds. Ring with a habitable zone on the inside. This system is completely self-efficient and perfect adaptable. The bigger brother would be a dyson sphere, complete incapsulation of the sun. Which are concepts first popularized by science fiction (Larry Niven and Olaf Stapledon, quick googling) and now popular in modern science communities.

Should definitely play the games. Even if you're not a gamer they are worth your time. I'm pretty sure any one of us fans would be willing to guide you through them as well. We always love seeing new people introduced to the wonderful story they have to offer

The Paramount "Halo" show was insulting to the franchise, which is why you have not heard much about it- if you do want to know more, Clownfish TV has a couple of videos breaking down the mess. Since Hannah is a writer, i think she will have a deeper grasp of how troubling it was for fans, when they heard the producer say in an interview- "we were working on adapting this videogame franchise into a show, but we decided not to limit ourselves by playing the games or researching their plot" When the team saw the backlash, they tried to calm fans down by saying that the show would be following the canon of the Halo novels, and while the novels expanded the games lore, they were based off the games! That said, the show is watchable if you don't know anything about Halo or treat it as completely non-canon. TLDR: They messed up Chief's character for the sake of "humanizing" him, and one "particular" scene did Cortana dirty. You are free to watch it to form your own opinion though. Ranting aside, would it be possible to react to Halo: Legends? It's been some years since its release, so there should be no issues with copyright, and while the canon of the episodes vary, it is a great watch for someone that loves stories. Edit: If you want to understand the story of Halo, well at least Halo 1 - 3, i highly recommend watching "Origins: part 1 and 2" from Halo: Legends

Cortana: You have something the others didn't. Can you guess what that is? Player: ? Cortana: Luck. Was I wrong? Man the companion AI was not kidding about that which lead to some minor funny moments. Especially him teleporting upside-down which if I remember correctly was in halo 2. Halo 3 was when she made the statement about John-117 almost killing himself landing on one the halo's/planet. But to honest I play the games never read the books though.

Nightfall is a miniseries, it was awesome !! Go watch it !

The games are amazing! The Halo movies and mini series are pretty good, though most are low budget. The show that came out this year is pretty bad, I would not recommend it. Edit: Also the books are really good. There are a lot, so reading them in order and knowing what happens in the games is helpful.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out both Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn and Halo: Nightfall. They're both movies you can watch on various platforms and they are both enjoyable, though Forward Unto Dawn is better in my personal opinion. Each movie was made as a watchable episodic series prior to the release of the second and third newest main games to explain some of the characters that appear in those games (Captain Thomas Lasky and Agent Jameson Locke) I also recommend Fall of Reach, a bit slower pace and much different artistically (it's fully animated rather than Live Action) but it explains the origin of the Spartans and Humanity's first encounters with the Covenant.

You owe it to yourself to read ALL of the books and to watch Fall of Reach, Nightfall and the Halo show, I've got them all on my phone at all times, the extended universe is amazing

Again I come here to recommend the RU-vid Series of videos called "Unraveled" uploaded by the channel Polygon They have two videos related to writing and the host is a writing major, one of the videos is a review of ALL the Halo books published up till then "I read every Halo novel and became the Master Chief of loneliness" The other is a review of all the books found in the game of Skyrim which can be read "I read all 337 books in Skyrim so you don't have to"

I saw how you liked Johnson's one liners in the Digi Blue trailer so here's a compilation of some of his other speeches - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-48Fy-t4shUg.html - there are repeats as he says different things on the different difficulties in the game which is a nice touch for those who play. The tentacle things are "The Flood" essentially a plague that was created to kill the "Forerunners" (which if you remember your book they should have been mentioned) which consume, that's their whole purpose to consume the Galaxy basically, and the talking one is called "The Gravemind" in the game but there's hints that it could be an old AI gone "rampant" that was absorbed by the flood. The guys with the long necks on the floating chairs are the Spiritual Leaders of the Covenant called "Prophets" or San'Shyuum in their language. They get fancy titles as they rise in the hierarchy, the leaders at the time of the Human-Covenant War being called the High Prophets of Truth, Mercy and Regret. The guys with the Laser Swords are called "Elites" or Sangheili are the Military leaders (though they follow the commands of the Prophets) of the Covenant, who go into rebellion when it's discovered that the Prophets betrayed The Covenant, they are then replaced by a race called Brutes. Halo lore is super fun and intricate, and sure it's been layered on in good and bad ways, however, there is a core of good and interesting ideas there that make for good games and stories. A lot of it involves what it means to be human.

You should absolutely read Halo Ghosts of Onyx! The best halo book of all in my opinion, it’s a really beautiful story that really shows the desperation of humanity some of the steps they took. It was the first halo book I’ve ever read and, at this point, reread over 50 times. I think you’d really love it!
