I tell you a secret guys: Most of you already did a lot of NMM without knowing it. Edge Highlight actually is baby first NMM. NMM as we know it is just moving it to bigger scale surfaces which are not as sharp so this "edge highlight" is wider and needs more detail.
When you had the steel done, I was impressed, that looks good. But then you added the bounce reflections... yup, it suddenly became much more 'real' and believable as steel! superb.
Got drawn in for the NMM... Stayed for the hope of seeing Argus again. He's so adorable! Also, I think I'm now ready to try NMM for the first time... Maybe.
Jon I just want to say that you have some of the best painting videos out there, no cap. Your teaching style is so concise and easy to follow, I really think you've hit the gold standard for this sort of thing. Not trying to blow smoke up your ass here, simply want you to know that the effort you put into your videos is really appreciated. Keep it up, dawg.
You have the magic power to make any technique approachable and fun, even the most intimidating. You don't make it too complicated but you do push your viewer just out of their confort zone. Also puppy 🖤💙🖤💙
By far the best short and to the point tutorial on non metallic metal i have ever viewed. Usually i try, and suck. Then my head hurts, i smash something and just use metallic paint and move on. I finally get it now, i gotta finish it regardless of how garbage it looks. THANK YOU!
I've watched so many videos on NMM and this is the first one that actually explained what was being done and made me feel like I understood what was happening. Tried my first NMM off the back of this, and I'm really happy with the result! Great video, and definitely one I'll recommend when people talk to me about NMM. Well-earned subscription, and now I'll be poring through your videos to see if there's other techniques that I don't feel I understand yet!
The idea of NMM painting has always terrified me, like directional lighting. I’ve… tried it before but I… well, if I’m honest I can’t say that I messed it up; I actually think it was more that I chickened out at the last moment and abandoned it before I really gave it a fair crack. This is awesome, mate. It’s nice, clear-cut information laid out in a really straightforward way, which is what you need from a video like this.
Love the puppers. Awesome. I have just started getting back into the hobby, Painting Mini's not War-hammer, and I have been watching your play lists back to back. Great work sir thank you for the effort you put into them. Haven't seen it yet but do you by chance have one on Air Brush usage
Thanks a lot for sharing ... Fun Fact: Reflections of metals are always tinted in the colour of the metal and do not inherit the colour of the reflected object. Still the Bump reflections really add to the miniature.
the Army Painter Speedpaint grey in the starter set creates a pretty convincing NMM look if you're looking for a dark steel. Used it on the weapons for my poxwalkers_over white zenithal) and was really surprised at how convincing it looked.
I've been painting for a few years, but only recently really tried to actively improve. Im about to try my first NMM, and this video is easily the best I've come across on the subject. Thank you for making it seem approachable! What an absolutely inspiring talent you have. I'm stoked to try this out
best NMM guide out there, and I've watched em all at this point. Youi pointed out some things I was doing wrong and also pointed out something no one else has mentioned, colour reflections from the base.
This has been the best intro to NMM I've seen so far: Great pacing, great explanations and presentation *and* you divided it into sections! Thank you so much, I'm so glad I found your channel! (subscribed)!
"You and me... had such wonderful times... when I'm all by myself!" -Green Day- Good stuff. I'm curious if this approach would work for dark gemstones like Obsidian, Black Onyx, Black Pearl. Perhaps changing the strength of the "shine" on the latter for a more satin effect. Seems to be working for a polished version but, when attempting a more natural "jagged" cut look comes out like cockadoodie. Would love your thoughts. Cheers!
This video is GOLD, normally all the NMM tutorials only produce a sensation like "Oh my God this will be impossible" and this is not the situation here. I only need to say thank you for this amazing video
Thank you! Really love this video. I've just finished my mini. It sucks. But it my sucks. My next one is going to be a little bit better. Don't give up - love this pice of advice. Thank you for your passion.
So, i gave this method a whirl, never been particular good at silver NMM- gold has always been easier for me to think through and do. 9 years later this has finally gotten it down for me, thanks dude keep up the good work.
Thanks for this video, I'm going to try it on my Necron overlord. A lot of NMM tutorial videos focus on models that have large surface area, hopefully yours will do the job - restart number 2 is go.
I have been drawing with pencils only since I’ve been very young (I’m 13 now) and drawing metallics has become very easy for me. Knowledge in drawing grey and white on metallics at an angle is a very good way to understand basic 3d metal. Angle is key, and a light source needs to be identified
That's amazing. Lately I've been really trying to follow your advice about paying attention to where your brush strokes end, and it's helped me allot. Thank you for being a pillar of this community.
I think the section on bounce reflections was exactly the bit I needed reminding on! I think I've already got the right idea when it comes to highlighting the right places, even if it isn't the neatest, but it still feels flat. Watching that final step on yours seems like it fixes the exact problem I've been having.
Black primer + edge highlights = army is like 95% of why an old friend of mine got into Black Templars back in the day. That comment gave me a good chuckle.
I'm subscribed. I have the bell pushed. I watched the whole vid and I know how long it took you to paint it. Cute puppy. I enjoy your vids. You and Scott should do more collabs, just don't let him scream about painting more minis. The mini looks great, the gold reads as nmm. The silver... not so much. It looks like a nice grey. Awesome vid thank you.
Thanks Jon. I've always adored your and miniacs Artstyle, with the large amount of nmm, and the huge blends. This guide is gonna be great. And I think ill paint my Nachmund box the same.
First, let me say I'm one of your loyal subscribers. Suck it, non-subs! Second, this video is amazing. I've watched so many NMM videos that don't describe or push the viewer to just...fake it til you make it. This was a good recognition of that "crappy phase" of the paint job and how to keep going. I'm ready to give it a shot! I'll call you out when i get one done.
I've tried NMM and totally botched it, but this is giving me an idea of where I messed up in the past. You're making this look easier than other painters I've seen tackle this style before, and that's helping a lot. You explain it clearly and that's a huge help!
Great step by step and the words of encouragement along the way are fantastic at making people feel like they can and will nail it. What an asset to this community.
Fantastic video! I've been putting off painting certain minis of mine as I was intimidated by NMM and didn't want to just use regular metallic paints. Watching this though you break it down into really easy steps and I'm going to give it a go!
This is an awesome NMM guide. Definitely want to try out the techniques here. "It will make you look like you know what you're doing even if you don't... because I sure as hell don't" Pffft yes you do. Maybe you just don't know that you know what you're doing. Thanks for the video!
3rd!? Earliest I've ever been. Working on an invader ATV and trying to avoid leaning on metallics. You couldn't have timed this better sir. Thank you. *Edit- Holy Crap 'Gus is gettin BIG!
