Non-stop Bay Fluke (Flounder) Fishing Action on Gulp Sandeels!

Excellent shallow bay Summer Flounder (Fluke) fishing fueled by an influx of sandeels from the ocean. Gulp Sandeels were a perfect match and caught most of the fish. The Hobie Outback kayak was awesome for controlling the drift.

i wore fishing gloves for years for reasons like you mentioned and my friends who fish with me always busted me about it but now they would cry like babies if they forgot there gloves because they never fish without them...holding the fish is so much easier especially with other species..we had a great mackeral and bonito bite this past saturday and without gloves to grip them it was difficult..i never had to let one hit the deck..snatched em in mid air and unhooked them..great video

I used the gulp sandeels in the manasquan river Sunday and went through a pack in a few hours. Caught about 20 shorts. Had one keeper on a 5" red salmon gulp grub and 1 oz. Pink spro bucktail. When I ran out of sandeels, I started using the 4" red salmon swimming mullet

Bring a tube of super glue with you, it help keeping the bait on a little longer. We have the same issues with Yamamoto baits.

Hi John, thanks for the video. I heard the gulp bait you were using , but didn’t hear about the rod and reel . I currently don’t use a low profile baitcaster for Fluke , I generally use a light tackle St.Croix spinning out fit for back bay fluke in that area, however I went to switch to a conventional do to right arm problems. I think that’s a Tsunami slim wave . I actually have the spinning version. Can you tell me what type of baitcaster that is. I don’t own one and may want to pick one up without breaking the bank in case I don’t like it. Thank you again

Something to try next time you use Gulp Sandeels...... cut off the front part of it where the hook has gone in and torn it up. I've had a couple other fish hit it afterwards, and just helps with preserving your bait a bit longer

You list a 6' spinning rod, trimmed 4 inches, with a baitcaster reel. Doesn't look like spinning guides and looks longer than 5'8". I like short rods in my outback also, how did you shorten your rod?

My mistake. I just fixed it. It's the casting rod. It's about 5 8'' cut. I love it for this application, boat or kayak. Thanks for asking about it.

Excellent video!! Have you tried using the jerk shads John? They strongly resemble the sand eels but have a bit more body to them. Also I just recently saw 8" Gulp eels at a sporting goods store. Do you think a large sea bass or fluke could handle that? Reason I'm asking is I'm going out on a party boat this week and really wanted to target big fish.

Those 8'' eels would definitely be worth trying. I put the Jerk Shads in my gulp cooler, but haven't tried them yet. Soon.

Hey John! A couple of things when you have a moment. What was your running line? This is the second video of yours where the reel and line had the same link. Next I noticed you don't have a power handle on that Accurist. Is that the Kayak config? And finally, I haven't seen you or the Jerks using your Tsunami Slow Pitch Acid Wrap rods in a while. Any reason?? Thanks in advance!

I just corrected those links. Thanks. I don't use a power handle for the light bay stuff. Running line is 15# Berkley X9. 10# is good too, especially in the bay. We've never used that Tsunami slow pitch for fluke jigging, but for stripers.

You are correct, John, my apologies. However, I wouldn't have made that mistake nor would I have had to ask you the question to begin with if you would finally acquiesce to publishing a tackle video similar to the one you did with your tackle bag. I would be very interested in knowing your go to rod/reel combos for different species and scenarios. What lines you prefer and terminal tackle you use for different targeted species. I'll keep lobbying and hoping. Thanks!!

No apologies necessary! The problem with such a video is that preferences change due to constant improvements in tackle. Berkley X9 line didn't exist last year, but it's my preferred fluke jigging line now because it's thinner than equivalent strength other lines and very smooth too. I really like that Tsunami reel that I used for casting from the bar video, but that's new too. I see room for improvement on the Accurist... I'm still on the Nexus for deep jigging, for now anyway. On the other hand I've used the same 9-footer off the beach for more than 20 years.

John, When you are rapid jigging, are you feeling the light bites/pressure when the rod is on the upstroke or downstroke? Obviously, a big bite is gonna be felt on either the up or down swing of the jigging stroke. Thanks in advance.

OK John, LOL. You've shown and proven to us many times how, when a fluke comes loose to just drop it down and nearly always the same fluke will take the bait again. Hey, all those fluke look alike so maybe you're catching the same two fish over and over again, considering you seem to be remaining it the same spot where you are returning fish to the water. ???

I always grab the sea robins in the mouth with my thumb just like i do with the striped bass. They don't have big teeth and so easy to hold them like that.
