Killadelphia These Savage Shores Excellence Birthright Skyward Port of Earth Black Hammer Ignited Abbott Cold Spots Gideon Falls Bitter Root Wythces Rasputin (Image comics) Have fun 🙃👋🏿
Yep, Im also definitely in that Brubaker rabbit hole myself. Currently reading Cruel Summer & I really love, love Velvet. I would also recommend Lazarus & Skyward, which has a hardcover collected edition coming in March.
Sandman - some of the oneshots are the closest thing to "real" literature I found in comics (ex: vol 3 of the tpb) Judge Dredd Transmetropolitan 100 Bullets
I’d love a horror/sci fi episode. I’m absolutely hooked on Nailbiter, American vampire, Gideon falls, Locke n key, ghost house, and ton more. I’m Always looking for other stuff to read and discover too. I think the only problem I’m having is figuring the differences between absolutes and deluxe and Omni ?
I would recommend Simon Spurrier's "Coda" for any art enthusiastic that's new to comics. It's not the greatest story on earth imo, but just seeing Bergara's art is like: "Whoah! This is what comics are like nowadays???!!!"
For years I thought there wasn't much for me in the world of comics (have never been much of a superheroes fan), then a friend introduced me to just how much I'd been missing. I'm sure your video has been quite an eye opener for many such as myself!
Nowadays seeing what happens in mainstream comics I am not sure if a TV/big screen adaptation is a good idea. Many staple comics were written several decades ago. In a very different social climate. I would rather keep wondering how certain characters would be portrayed on the screen than see a mockery of the source material.
Really enjoying this channel. I’ve never been a graphic novel/comic guy but I had a large and very unexpected heart attack in July and I’ve been pretty much stuck at home since. Started buying graphic novels and discovered a whole new world. Particularly love the work of Jeff Lemire (bought most of his back catalogue now), Grant Morrison, MarkMillar. If anyone reads this and has any non-superhero recommendations - type away!
Sad that Scalped and Descender were in the thumbnail but didn’t make the video. Those books are both awesome. I think Extremity would be a good recommendation for anyone who likes Saga. Also Uber for anyone who loves WW2 history and Sci-Fi.
Another video idea could be the best superhero comics that are not a part of DC or Marvel. Apologies if you've already done such a video, couldn't find it if you did.
Sir you are doing the lords work lol I loved this, I’m a big comic book fan but I’m fading away from the big 2 and I like to dig into mostly anything. This diverse list was great, hope to see more horror recommendations
Happy to hear these recommendations clicked! We’ve done some videos on specific themes like horror, fantasy, sci fi recommendations and will absolutely be doing more in the near future!
Good review. Cool voice Lazarus is no joke Love it. Never got into TMT but I may try the IDW. Transformers I love Locke and Key book is hardcore Series is is eh M Too light Walking Dead started out good and then it turned to shit. Y the last man was a cool book. Preacher is blasphemous. Black Science I heard is good. Should have gotten that instead of East of West
I would recommend Dead Eyes, Nocterra, undiscovered country and department of truth. These are great series to get people hooked into comics who are hesistant.
Yes, lack of spandex, alter egos, leagues of heroes, supervillains, stupid powers, bright colors, and realistic cityscape settings. Plus the addition of myth, history, and monsters. Genres are defined by their superficial tropes and stortytellimg conventions, but almost every genre routinely features heroes who are larger than life in some way,
I recently came back to graphic shorts (don't like term comic now I'm old 😁) , I've enjoyed turtles last Ronin series and then I tried to read some new Crow idw's but I just didn't like them , the use of colour takes away some grit of James O'Barr originals and some of the stories just didn't grip me. One thing that put me off dc and marvel comics is the referencing in a new story past comics in a window box and then feeling I've missed an event. Anyways great video and some great suggestions.
great video mike! got invincible , chew and CHu because of you! cant wait to read it! Too bad we dont get a lot of image/idw/boom etc over here... onlye marvel dc :(
@the hardcover comic Do you guys print the custom dust jackets as well? Or if you just design it, where do you recommend going to print? Thanks Love the vids.
We just design! Houchen is the best place to print in the US. Not sure in other places, but your best bet is to take an official dust jacket to a print shop and tell them that is the kind of paper and quality you would like them to print!
So admittedly I’m of a philosophical and scientific aura and I’m embarrassed I drank the Kool aid in 2012 for the TV show . Then one day it all clicked : entropy , rigor Morris and blowflie and maggot consumption of human flesh make “zombies “ a total complete impossibly the crows would feast on their eyes and thier brains would decompose into black goo in less than a week the show being in GA yeah zombies just don’t fly when forensic pathologists are consulted I don’t care how good the comic are I use them as paper weights and will trade for just about anything still embarrassed by the stupid ****! 🤮💀🤮💀🤡
Really good list. Here are some other newish ones are Nocterra (my fav), something is killing the children (very close second), Nice House on the Lake (amazing story), and if you want something superhero that isn’t the big two there’s Black Hammer and Crossover. These are all extremely compelling and all of them have excellent writing. Oh yeah and Bunny Mask.
I would recommend the futurama comics for anyone who likes the show or enjoys syfi space adventures. The comics aren’t just rewrites of old episodes either. It’s like a whole other season of futurama. It has compelling stores and it might be a syfi comedy but they delve into touchy subjects in the show and comic.
Y was brilliant, I remember hearing about the show and thinking, women aren't going to like that...and then it's cancelled. Criminal, how on earth has that not been made into a tv series! Locke & Key I didn't like the show, too frustrating, I did like the idea though. I will look up more on the books. One to add, one of my all time favourites: the Paul series by Michel Rabagliati. A french Canadian. Just awesome stories of his life.
What are your thoughts on The Immortal Hulk? I’m not a big marvel nor DC fan but I’ve heard a few points that put this one on my radar. Not sure if I should pull the trigger.
How about comics that respect your intelligence? No superheroes, no cheap thrills like in 90 percent of comics where it gets stupid as fuck after the third issue? Ya know stuff you can read and feel something and get out of it thinking *shit that was something and it’s gonna stick with me? Apart from Black Hole which totally is exactly that?
