Omg same for me too!! I watched booktube a lot 4ish years ago (including this *amazing* channel ^w^) but then stopped. Past few months I've started watching like 1 or 2 channels again, including this one :)))
Thank you for sharing these recs! Becoming is a book I’ve been slowly making my way through on audio, and it‘s amazing. It’s actually hard to put into words how inspiring it is 😭
I agree with you, March is INCREDIBLE. It is so well done, and I’m glad he went with a graphic novel format. I love the variety of recommendations you have, thank you!!
I've been putting off reading Know My Name as I know it will just make me so angry! Will have to make sure I'm in the right headspace for it though as I don't want that to be a reason for me never to pick it up 🙈 Lovely varied list! xx
I so understand this- you are not wrong in knowing it will make you angry, so definitely pick it up only when the times feels right! In the meantime I might actually recommend watching some interviews with Chanel because she really seems just lovely. And happy to share some recs! Thank you for watching
I definitely want to read _March_ and _Becoming_ (along with Barack's recent memoir)! I have a sneaking suspicion I will feel called out by _Why We Sleep_ but it's probably something I should look into 😅 Those hands!! 😂Maybe this would be a good opportunity to get some paint and go wild on that wall??
Definitely want to get to Barack’s book sometime too! (And then it can be Obama vs Obama for who writes better 👀) Why We Sleep is a much needed call out- check out just the first chapter even! And yup I think painting over is all there is left to do 😩 but oh I would love a cute purple background for my videos 😂
i had to read being mortal for school and i thoroughly enjoyed it! so many things to think about not only as wife, daughter, and friend, but also as a healthcare professional.
Great recs. R.I.P. to the GREAT John Lewis aka "Good Trouble" I too, have POOR sleep habits. The doctor said the brain isn't following the body, when it's time to rest. Brain is in OVER DRIVE. I will add that book to my cart. Thanks for sharing.
I wasn't familiar with most of the books you mentioned. I really like that there was a variety of books mentioned here, so almost any reader can find something to suit them.
I really want to read March by John Lewis! Becoming was one of my favourite books last year. I read it via audiobook. Maybe I should read Why We Sleep to help with my difficulty sleeping and staying asleep ;.; Know My Name sounds really important as well, and emotional too. It's on my TBR. (I hopped over from Lauren Wade's recommending booktubers video!)
Hi fellow Olivia! 1) I listened to a bit of Becoming on audio (before starting the physical book) and with just the little bit I heard, I knew the audio was a good one. And I'm glad some of these other books caught your attention too! 2) omg I will be sure to check out Lauren's channel, thanks for mentioning this- booktuber rec videos are so kind 🥺 (and helpful!)
I read the March trilogy, Becoming and one of the Little Leaders books and loved them all!! ❤️ It was especially touching to read March after knowing that John Lewis had passed. Know My Name, Why We Sleep and An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth are all on my TBR, I'm sure they will be very interesting reads 🤓
Oh so glad you already have enjoy several of these reads and happy reading with your TBR :D And I hope the March books are getting extra love- a sad year
I'm going to recommend Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham and Blowout by Rachel Maddow. Both excellent reads, accessible for us laypeople while still managing deep dives into complex material.
As an avid non-fiction reader myself, I find it absolutely fantastic and inspiring when I see others giving the genre a chance! Out of curiosity, do you take book recommendations? Because I have a couple, which, I think(?), might interest you!
@@iLiviesimone Wonderful, I'm glad to hear it! So, here's a little list I've put together, see for yourself if there's anything interesting in there: "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" by Walter Rodney "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness" by Michelle Alexander "Women, Race and Class " by Angela Davis "Feminism for the 99%: A Manifesto" by Cinzia Arruzza, Nancy Fraser, and Tithi Bhattacharya "Blackshirts and Reds " by Michael Parenti "The Wretched of the Earth" by Frantz Fanon ""Killing Hope: U.S. Military and CIA Interventions since World War II" by William Blum "The Spirit Level - Why Greater Equality Makes Societies Stronger" by Kate Pickett and Richard G. Wilkinson There you go, that's my list, for now. Again, I don't know if any of this is the kind of thing you would normally read, but I can assure you they're all AMAZING books. One thing that was important to me, in my compiling of this list, was to include works from a diverse range of authors. Walter Rodney, Michelle Alexander, Angela Davis, Tithi Bhattacharya and Frantz Fanon were/are all people of color.
This is a nice list of recommendations. I really enjoyed Being Mortal. I hope you don't mind my asking - does Why We Sleep just cover the reasons for, and a plea to, sleep or does it go into sleep conditions?
Glad you liked the recs! And definitely don't mind answering- He discusses really just about anything related to sleep (so that includes what's going on biologically, how it varies across our lifetime, how the amount correlates directly with health, insomnia, etc.), but especially the consequences of not getting enough If you pick it up I hope it's a good read for you :)
They are delightful 💜 I think they are sold in most places with books, like Target, so maybe you can browse through it next time you pass a book section!
