Helping Hands ☆☆☆ - AmperSam & gbreeze
I had an interesting thought after playing this level. Switch Palaces are sort of an expected feature of longer collaborative hacks, or just longer hacks in general really, but like, what does that mean at this point? I feel like there's an expectation that they will look stripey and will end with a switch. Is that it? Once upon a time I feel like they where almost always puzzles but all the nonsense ones have been pretty actionny, and yet they all still 'fit' the idea of a switch palace. Is a switch palace now just a level, but with a switch?
I mean that's fine. But I think that's interesting.

"I didn't want a 1-up, I wanted a mushroom!" I mean, a 1-up is in fact a mushroom so it did give you what you asked for. You just weren't specific enough.

What you said in irony, I say with conviction. Good job, raocow! You’re the best!

This level is a good example of how to use an autoscroller. The autoscroll serves to keep you moving while also forcing you to deal with the falling platforms because you can’t just rush ahead.

I'm wearing big, over the head headphones and I can not hear any background noise from the fan, I think you're fine to have it on.

This level seems difficult, but it really just hands you the win. It's hands-down one of the most unusual, but you beat it handily. I gotta hand it to the devs, some of the platforms really came in handy. Let's put our hands together for this level! 👏

I think this level would be better if it leaned more into the hands being helpful, even when that help is actually an obstacle. The hand giving you a star is a perfect example. Of course it's helping, it's giving you an invincibility powerup! It's just that getting that powerup kills you because you can't get across a pit with it. That's much more interesting than a hand dropping a boomerang bro behind a wall so you can't even kill it but it can attack you.

Even if it isn't a nod to this I can't help but feel this level is a neat little call back to the Aladdin SNES game level where the Genie helps Al with the making of the parts of the level the player platforms through. Very excellent Switch Palace overall.

And like here, he seems to have a funny way of "helping" sometimes; either having just cloud platforms or having more awkward swinging and vaulting objects to work through, as well.

Death count: 1323 (20 today) Normal moon count: 8/25 (0/1 today) (0:02) Yeah, if it's 35° out, with a heat index of 43° (about 95° and 110° respectively in burgerland :P), then it's fine if you leave your AC fan running. I can barely hear it anyway. (0:52) No Yoshis because their hands aren't made for helping. (1:03) Hey there, Master Hand! So, it's sorta gonna be like the Lakitu in that Luftabwurf level, I guess, delivering goodies and baddies along the way. (1:37) Socked for today's first death. (2:12) "Tick." Graze +1. (3:41) I'm pretty sure they appear based on the screen scroll. (4:47) Start of the winning run of the first half. (5:45) Somehow, the game let you stomp that Hammer Bro. without hurting you with the ascending glitch. (5:57) Critical hit! Maybe you could've retrieved that reserve mushroom but it would indeed have been a tad risky. (5:59) 🐟🐟🐟 (6:05) Zwee! Took you 9 deaths to get this far. Also, this means it didn't matter whether or not you had retrieved your reserve mushroom back at 5:57 anyway. (6:58) Rampage time... when you don't want to rampage. Oops. (7:44) Huh... The moon level list that Jolpe gave me does not include this level. Oops. (8:11) Coin trails are always accurate. :P (10:10) Start of the winning run of the second half. (10:57) Nuts, I was hoping you'd get the moon on this winning run. Oh, well. I guess I'll be making a video later today. (11:28) !ush! Let's DDR! :P ...Anyway, it took you 11 deaths to clear the second half. And with that, every switch palace in this hack has been activated! Don't forget to visit Level Shoppe now that you have all switch palaces turned on.

Re: the description This is sort of something I've been thinking about for the entirety of this video series. I think that the priorities of SMW ROMhack creators in general have really shifted over time, not just with Switch Palaces. When I was younger, a lot of the hacks with notoriety (and the ones I would see on this channel) really felt like they were trying to be "a game." They would attempt to have their own little story that they take reasonably serious, and generally try to feel like their own thing instead of a modified version of SMW. Nowadays, a lot of the hacks I see (especially ones chosen for this channel) prioritize simply being a fun collection of platforming levels above all else. If there's a plot at all, it's literally a joke and that attitude extends to the level names as well. We see a lot more unorthodox obstacles too, and less of a care for a "polished" look (in this level alone there was cutoff at the bottom of some of the platforms, not to mention the water level that had floating squares of cutoff water.) If I had to hazard a guess, I would say this shift in mindset is probably due to Super Mario Maker. The underlying design philosophy of "make a fun level above all else, who cares if it looks janky, this mechanic is neat" is the soul of that game. And it's because of this that I think you're seeing what you're seeing in regards to Switch Palaces. At one point in time, there was almost an obligation that a lot of people felt to make them puzzle-y, because that's what the original SMW did. That's what "a full game" is "supposed to do" so to speak. But we've moved past that and simply don't care, because the collective majority of level creators has decided that a fun level is more important, which just so happens to be an action/platforming challenge for a lot of people (not to insinuate puzzles aren't fun.) Switch Palaces are simply an aesthetic now. Colored stripes with a slightly different shape to the end goal. However, because they're unique in that they permanently alter the levels of the game, they're useful for creating a long term goal (such as hiding a secret world/level behind a rainbow bridge), or rewarding completionist players with optional goodies/ease to challenges later in the game.

Maybe the world 6 star connection is in a castle? I wouldn't put it past them to hide a secret exit there.

The hands are helpful, it's just that the level name never specified who they'd be helping.

No complete argument can be made that they are helping either you or Bowser's forces. Therefore, it can be concluded they are beholden only to the level itself.

I did feel a sort of kaizo undertone to amper's stuff, like yoshi's ditch and today's level. I did really like it in this level though, it felt fitting. a bit like how gbreeze's yellow switch is also basically kaizo and works. maybe switch palaces are secretly good as kaizo levels

Cool level. As for the romhack philosophy question in the desc... interesting. Not something I think about. Don't have strong opinions, just hope it isn't a sign of puzzle levels in general falling out of favor.

I think there's still quite a lot of freedom in this level. There's several junctions where multiple paths are possible (e.g. 10:34 raocow could have chosen the top route; 10:58 again a top route exists). And mario's position in the autoscroll is flexible. I enjoy this sort of level where there are some forcing elements like bouncing on parakoopas, but it's not overly precise or anything.

I kind of agree with the "not kaizo, but kaizo vibes" sort of feel of this level. like its well-made and forgiving enough, but something about the design feels like you would see it in a modern kaizo and i can't quite put my finger on it. i also feel similarly about other ampersam levels in this hack

This was a really cool level. I have a strange relationship with these pseudo-kaizo autoscrollers, generally liking them way more than I think I would from the concepts alone (see Jolpe's MAGL4 entry for another example). As for the description, I feel like people still do like making puzzle levels, at least in principle, but that that gets harder now that a lot of ideas have already been explored (and as you can't just set up a sequence of item babysitting and call it a puzzle anymore, haha).
