Some advice, unstrap the transom straps after you put the plug in. Keep the Routine you'll never forget. Stay calm at the Ramp. Especially on the Pull-up.

You're absolutely right. I've left the trolling motor down many times. Today actually lol. You get more reminded real quick with a rain shower to the face! Then you look around and make sure no one was watching lmao!!

Ive done all of these more times than i can count on both hands and feet! glad we can all relate, now i dont feel like such a dimwit. When i bought my second boat i didnt have the right hitch size for the drive home and she popped off doing about 55mph down the turnpike, thankfully i had a buddy with to help me lift it back up. last but not least i couldnt figure out why i had no spark coming from the plugs so i took the flywheel off to check the wiring for the stator but i wrecked it in the process. A new one cost me 150 bucks and a day later i come to find the safety shutoff chord was unplugged! Good laughs is the second best part of owning a bass boat in my opinion

Lou, Great info, never look at it as a fail it's only a mistake. Hopefully we will never make the same mistake more than once and we learn from them. The most important thing is not making mistake that ham someone or ourself all other we can laugh about and keep it moving, be safe Bro.

After 40 yr.'s finally got a boat , ( Older 12 ft. aluminum V ) I will be launching for first time , ( not to mention Solo ) . Just wanted to say thanks for the Tutorial and Positive Reinforcement's , As I'm sure I will be entertaining many other fisherman with Stupid neglects , and Pissing a few off as well .. due to Ignorance .. I'm happy others have commented on their own mistakes as well , we are all not perfect , while learning from those mistakes and laugh them off ( at least I do ) There isn't much humor in the world today , Thanks for sharing everyone !

This past year was my first year ever owning a bass boat as well. Bought my VT 17 Crestliner in June 2017. Here are my 3 biggest "learning" issues... Trip 1, Couldn't get motor to start, then realized after a half hour of WTF's, I didn't have the kill switch lanyard plugged in. Trip 2, had a great day, went to load up the boat, but had trailer backed in too deep. Didn't know, and was frustrated why I couldn't get the nose up on the post. Trip 3, Forgot to trim the motor up pulling out of the water and away from the launch ramp at the end of the day. A guy chased me down and pointed out how my skeg was dragging. Can't wait for some pre-spawn action!

Oh man I'm itching for the ole pre-spawn!!!! Heck we just need a thaw to happen right now...I intend to get out and run more Potomac waters prior to the grass coming up

I always forget something when other people are “trying” to help. I just ask them politely to worry about their stuff and I’ll take care of mine. I am very particular on how I pre-check for launch and also when we get back to the fish camp. I start inside the boat first making sure everything is turned on and stored. Then work the outside. The load up! Maybe takes a few more minutes...but it’s worth it. Wreck Em Tech!

Hey, we've all done it at one time or another and you're absolutely correct! we have our routine and we get distracted and miss something. The worst i've seen is someone trying to power load and the water level was lower... what happened... their nice new prop didn't look so great after a few times hitting the concrete!

the absolute worst for me? first time putting in my new rig, FIRST TIME camping/fishing Possum Kingdom. that evening was perfect for a night of topwater. absolutely destroyed them for HOURS! (one of THOSE kind of nights) fish turned off late, maybe 1:am, time to go back to the campsite. we had gone SO far and we were lost on a moonless night. no compass/lake map, (everything new) BUT, i had my flood light. ok, no problem? BIG PROBLEM! that lake is so big, and so many little twists and curves, it took us till first light to finally find our wives and trucks!? so damn tired and pissed, we ate breakfast and of course went right back out. that next night i slept like a caveman.

Man this video hits home on so many issues lol. My dad and I went fishing one morning and I have a process I do before launch. Well he's talking to me and telling me to do this and that which threw me off my routine. He goes to park the truck and trailer and I take the boat for a run just to make sure all is good. Well I head back to the ramp to get him and notice a lot of water in the boat. Well you guessed it I forgot the plug and we had to back the trailer back down load it up and bilge and drain the boat which of course blew some of our best times for fishing. Everyone has issues and I've been boating for about 20 years now. I've learned a lot of the things you don't do. LOL Keep it up and enjoy

" That's the third one I broke off ! " Full credit for being brutally honest. Owning a boat certainly opens a person up to having multiple experiences with Murphy's Law... :) Check, Check, Check. Develop a routine and don't deviate from it. And yes keep you're mind on the task at hand.

Props to you for standing up & owning your " Learning Experiences". So many peeps are TOO GOOD to admit mistakes. I have no shame, and all about accountability. If we live through these shining moments, we can usually laugh about it later. I'm not a bass flogger, I classify myself as more of a passive fisherman. Occasionally I will work trees & structure for crappie. For the most part, I tie up & minnow fish and/or catfish. I've had my share of MOMENTS. The lady that fishes with me often can testify to some of the experiences as well. Things can happen quickly, the best we can do is----the best we can do. I'm HUGE on courtesy at the ramp. Other guys....not so much. Experienced an episode of RAMP RAGE just the other night. Certainly not proud of it, but I had a genuine meltdown on a fashion statement with cap on backwards about previously mentioned COURTESY. I'll bet you 4 dozen minnows that he didn't learn a damn thing. Be safe brutha.

Thanks for sharing. Ive got several doozies, I guess the classic of all time is not putting the plug in Striper fishing Clarks Hill at night. Crossing the Dam, fish were busting herring all over the place. Launched, hauled ass to the dam and on the third fish stepped of the front deck into three inches of water. Hit the bilge and drove slowly to siphon water back out enough to get back to shore. It was only 130 feet deep and that was the third time I did it. Guess everything is best done in three's.

I had a spare ignition key made for my boat. Next trip to the lake -45 miles away-I backed my boat down the ramp, jumped in to drive it off the trailer, and realized I had left the key and new spare key back at home on the dresser. Now I have 5 keys! Always one in the truck and one in the boat, a spare to my fishing partner if I have one, one in my lunch bag (I NEVER forget my lunch) , and one locked in the safe at home.

I forgot to unhook my cord to the battery charger and had it hooked into the cleat on the boat and drug the cord 3 miles down the road to the pond I was fishing. When i got the the lake I found the charger hooked up but no power cord, so i figured it pulled apart at home. I fish for about 4 hours load the boat up and driving out the primitive road that goes down to the lake I find my 100 ft power cord in the road. It has a little road rash, but still in good shape and I still use it. lol

I left the trailer lights hooked up. Rolled boat off trailer, got in the big ass 4x4 I rented, and could not put it in drive as the electronics were now screwed. The shift lockout that works with the brake pedal was malfunctioning so I was stuck in park at the boat launch. Checked fuses, replaced fuses, etc,etc. Made for a real long day. So remember to disconnect your trailer lights during launch. All part of the joys of boating.

Happen to me too, first launch forgot one boat strap as a person was talking to me. Forgot the plug on the 3rd trip rushing (friend inspired rushing) Can't happen if you never go fish. It's kinda like getting hung up I suppose, you can't get hung if you never makes a cast😎🎣

Ok this could be a little long, but here goes. My first boat was a used 1974 Browning. This boat taught me about really inspecting a boat. Anyway, Father’s Day here in SC. We took the boat out to Lake Keowee for a cookout and a day on the lake with my grown kids and my grands. Well, everything went well until I decided I’d take the boat down the lake by myself to just run it out before getting the family on it. I got out past the no wake buoys and shoved the throttle forward. That’s when I heard a loud “pow” behind me. I turned around and saw water coming into the boat where the transom used to be. The 150 Mercury was sitting at a very odd angle. I shouted to my wife, “I’m sinking!” Her response, “What do you want me to do about it?” Fortunately, there were several boats around who helped me. One towed my boat to the landing while another gave me a lift. By the time they got the boat to the landing, it had capsized. There were about 10 of us in the water righting this boat so I could crank it up on the trailer. I can laugh about it now, but at the time all I could do was lament how $2000 was going to the bottom of the lake! Lessons learned.

Have owned a boat for years, but got a brand new Skeeter ZX200 a little over a month ago. Have done all of those with the exception of the jack. My trailer pin was not only out but I forgot to drop the latch down (because I was talking) and drove 15 miles before my friend told me. The other thing I did was on day one of breaking in the boat was I took my rear seat out of the seat hole and placed it on the back deck to do something in the live well. Forgot it was there. Broke it in for the first two hours then got to drive it fast for a little and when I got back noticed that I was missing a seat. Yep, that was $350.00 on the first day. With my old boat, I had a process that I went through. This new boat is much bigger and has more things to do so it is just a matter of getting that routine down. In a month I have lost a seat, towel, hat, 2 fishing poles and gopro equipment all because my old boat went no more than 40. Had to learn the hard way. Pay the dues to get a lot faster! haha. Great video.

I towed my boat trailer to my buddies house for storage and could get over to the far right line and the stop light. Tried turning in the far left lane and watched the trailer hit the curb and go up in the air. Also towing down really bumpy roads in the city. Trailer went airborne yet again. 🤣😂 years ago I launched the jon boat I used to have, undid the straps and as I was backing down the ramp I hit the brakes cuz I wasnt lined up good and the boat slid off the trailer. I've also launched without the drain plug too with my best friend smh lol

I’ve made the mistake of taking off with the trolling motor down too. Broke my shaft in half. But I think one of my most embarrassing mistakes was getting up from my seat with my pfd and safety lanyard still on, backed up my truck, went back in the boat and I couldn’t get the boat started. After about a good 5 minutes, I finally realized that the annoying string that kept getting tangled around my arm was my safety lanyard for my kill Switch.

that dang cord....in my first tourney I stood up was a bit nervous and my co-angler looked at me and said....you are new to this Huh?
@jordansomegermanlastnamepb4339
Lol first time out we tried starting the boat for a good 10 min. Checking the gas air valve pumped the primer looked at the gey start wiring etc it was a brand new 2017 murcery 40. In a brand new boat!! We were like omg wtf is it us? Or is there something wrong with the boat! Then realized, we had it in drive not neutral. And it was a fairly quite busy early summer afternoon.. uuugh the thought of it
@5280Bassin
@5280Bassin 6 лет назад
I did the opposite. I drove to my first spot, put it in neutral, was excited to catch 'em, jumped up to get to the deck and the cord was in just the right position that it tripped me and I fell face first onto the step to the front deck.

I’m always talking to my dad when we are getting the boat ready... he tells me to shut up sometimes😂. I remember one time we was going to the lake and I was messing with the trim button before we left and the transom saver fell and was dragging on the road

I would have bet everything you would have mentioned leaving the power poles down. The sheath on ours is cracked multiple times from it lol. The pole hasn't snapped though. That shryrock part was hilarious

First year with my boat kinda sucked because i was so nervous at busy ramps I kinda spent more time on launching and load that season. Kinda like the season when I started using baitcasters that season was birds nest and re line right on the boat . Grateful i learned to get these things in check and RIP LIPS of chunks now. You live you learn if your not learning your not living

First day launching my brand new (to me) 1982 Aluminum boat I almost sank it. Didn't even leave the launch. 4+ inches of water in the boat. This is the day I learned that boats have plugs.

Well thank you first of all....alao i just got my first boat a few months ago. Its an older boat around 1980. I forget to pick up the damn anchor from time to time. But one thing I've realized is that at least im starting out with a boat that cost me a couple hundred dollars i stead of a new one. Thanks for the info

I just got a bass boat with a low price tag for the same reason. First boat ever, with a lot of scratches. I plan to learn with it and in the future buy a better/newer one.

Left the straps on my Ranger when someone interrupted my routine. Check. Plug left out. Check. Left troller down. Check. Boat enough and you will have mishaps.

The worst, the WORST boating mistake I ever made was as a kid in the 90s. At our summer cottage, the guy next door said “use my crawdad all you want...I never use it” and of course I thanked him profusely (it was a canoe up until that point). Coming back from one trip, I failed to raise the trolling motor in time while coming into shore....SCRAAAAAPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEE. The worst part about this is that you’re in shallow water and you’ve scraped into even shallower water so there’s no quick way to fix your fuck up. This thing was not the same for the rest of the summer after that and I didn’t know what to do. As a kid, I had no money to offer, no skills to fix it and no means to get him another one. It’s one of the few stains on my childhood memories spent on that lake and even though he was cool about it, I still felt like I betrayed his trust in a major, major way. It still disturbs me 25 years later. I’ll be cringing about that until the day I die...

Yup. Done most of these things. The trolling motor down is the worst when you get going. At least on my boat, once you hit a certain speed, a ridiculous amount of spray comes over the bow. Funny on a warm day, not so funny when it's cold and windy. Haha. I've also driven away with the electrical cord still attached. Twice! Have you pulled the boat out of the water before turning the motor off? I've done that a few times. =(

I’ve done the trolling motor one time. Hope to never do it again. Moving spots. Friend with me. Strapped the rods down. Fired up the boat and smashed on the pedal. Water spraying everywhere!!!! WTF!!!!!! Finally realized it. Felt so stupid. Luckily it didn’t damage the trolling motor. And just yesterday I made it a little ways down the road and realized I didn’t put the trailer pin in. Gotta slow down sometimes.

The 2 sayings that I know... "Just add YET to the end on anything you say you haven't done.." And. "Those that HAVE, those that Will, and those that LIE." Plugs out.. First time using a buddy's boat at a busy deep creek ramp..alone. Second time... Same boat, but HE did it.. I was parking the truck and I hear him yelling to bring it back.. About 44 degree water and he's in to his waist trying to hold the thing up and get the plug in and I run in to my man parts to hook up the strap.... That was a LONG day.. It's amazing how fast they go down with those small holes ;)
