I nearly choked on my coffee at the price of such an ordinary looking hive. It looks more like a coffin. Being a design engineer I can see so many things wrong without even PAFEC testing it. A horizontal roof rather than a peaked roof is bound to be a magnet for holding rainfall. The legs are far too narrow to withstand soft surfaces like grass over a period of time. There's so much more that can go wrong. Having branding slapped all over it makes it look ugly. I'd want bespoke branding if that. Accoya® is modified brand named wood and not natural at all. I'm sorry but I'm not sold on it.

Absolutely a beautiful hive setup. I have a similar made design here in the States and love it. I believe the hobbyists could definitely benefit from a hive like that to grow an apiary quick. Great video.

Thanks Yappy. Glad you enjoyed the video :) I just love the way this one looks. I sit in my lounge looking at it thinking.. come on SPRING. I want to fill you with bees!

First thoughts are it looks too low for a taller beekeeper. Also I’d prefer entrances at the rear so you’re not standing in front of the entrances when working the bees. I’d also be interested to know how the Perspex cover boards would slide once the bees start to propolise it?
@NormanBeresford
@NormanBeresford 7 месяцев назад
The entrances are split between the front and back, three on either side
@NoochiiHive

The hair pin legs on this hive are 40cm tall. There is also an option to have 70cm legs which would put the hive at roughly table height
@NoochiiHive

Regarding the Perspex crownboards, the bees do propolise the edges as they do with wooden crownboards. I use my hive tool to loosen the edges and pop it off like any other crownboard. A little handle/knob might help, I’ll work on that! 🤔

The video is interesting but it doesn't show it filled with bees and honey. How does he take the frames away for extraction? What does he carry them in? Can his extractor deal with brood frames especially the 14x12s? Does he press the honey out or take cut comb? Would those thin legs support it when it's full of bees and honey? Lots of questions.

Great queen rearing possibilities. Overwintering with each nuc supporting the next for heat on either side. Swarming would be an issue. A 2x10 board will work and add extra protection against the cold of winter. Being a woodworker myself, I would have a few changes to make it better for my climate. The change I would make would be a gabled roof. that way I could give 1 gallon pails of syrup instead of smaller feedings. The bottom should be hinged with 1/8 mesh for mite drops. Unclip the hinge and empty out the trash from the hive without the harassing bees. Have the top removable for double nucs for winter? Easier to get them to build up their population for winter and more winter stores. Not sure how to make the top light enough for this to work though. I guess one winter to see how they fair. Just beautiful piece of work. Thank you for showing it to us.
@NoochiiHive
@NoochiiHive 7 месяцев назад
Hi there, thanks for the comments. The bottom is mesh and there are 3 removable trays below the mesh to collect debris. The trays can be positioned right against the floor to close it off or in a lower position to allow some air flow into the bottom of the hive 😉

Will certainly be interesting to see how it weathers over time but not something I would need or use just now but maybe a purchase for the future. Looks very handy for early splits and over wintering nucs as a back up for any winter losses. Better start filling up a piggy bank or plan a bank job.....

Accoya is a good timber - BUT - It needs a treatment because it is easy for it to get Blue Stain which is unsightly.

@@BlackMountainHoney I work for Osmo and we always advise a finish with Accoya. Their own website also shows various finishes.

I wasn’t aware either, and the company producing the timber haven’t mentioned this to me. I’ll check with them on this, thanks for letting me know. The original Noochii Hives haven’t changed colour yet
@mustrumridcully3853
@mustrumridcully3853 7 месяцев назад
@@NoochiiHive It will be related to the finish too. Some finishes are surface coatings, some are penetrative - both have different properties - but the underlying "timber" will still do what it wants. Dont expect Accsys to be overly forthcoming. lol. If you want to talk to me about timber finishes I have been in the trade for 20+ years now with a big company in the technical department.

Is the chemical that is used to treat the wood safe for bees? I’m guessing it is, but I’d like to hear it explicitly. Nice looking hive. Perfect for my Langstroth apiary.
@NoochiiHive

Hi, the timber is treated with acetic acid which is a concentrated vinegar, the finished timber is safe for bees and is food safe too 😊

@NoochiiHive
@NoochiiHive 7 месяцев назад
The entrances can go where you like. On the standard Noochii Hive they are all on the back so that you are not working in the way of the bees leaving/returning. We decided to have entrances on both sides on this hive to keep some distance between the 6 colonies
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 7 месяцев назад
This is pretty much standard on these nucleus hives Peter. Same as my 8 x nuc Long Hive. You can work a couple of nucs from the side. Its only the two in the middle you can to stand in front of
