I watched 10 Cloverfield Lane again before watching NOPE, and the moment he said “it’s AUP now” I knew that it was gonna be a huge alien instead of an alien ship (just like the end of 10 Cloverfield Lane). I hope more movies do this 🙏 all those people getting vacuumed into the alien reminded me of all the people being eaten in War of the Worlds.
One misconception i caught here was that Jupe's show wasn't popular. This was the first time he was doing the show in front of people. For the past 6 months he has been "training" the creature and feeding it horses, but this was the first time he was debuting the "act"
Not just that, he mentions the main opening when trying to hand him his flyer. During the discussion over the fake horse and just really who owns it. The paper flies away but there is a close up shot that explains that the first show will be coming up.
It honestly wasn’t that hard to decipher. As soon as the horse kicked after being riled up by the film crew, I knew something was up. We’re introduced to Gordy at the very beginning, so early on we are supposed to be thinking about trained animals and their unpredictable nature. Once we realize that the aliens were being used as an attraction, it all clicks.
Genuinely liked the idea of the “aliens” in this movie not being actual life size beings, but instead a giant singular organism that defies what we thought aliens would look like overall. I usually think abt random things that I don’t hear other people talking abt, and I always randomly think abt how we don’t actually know what aliens would look like or how they would communicate or even their true intentions. I like it how Jordan plays off of the alien ship ufo trope, but minus the small aliens. Which I feel like is implying that throughout history when we just see ufo ships, we are actually seeing the aliens themselves, which explains the lack of small alien footage, and the obtuse amount of ufo footage.
I don't know what people were expecting. Like no one has ever seen an alien but everyone thinks we know what one looks like because of Hollywood. Sort of like with religion. I likened the 4 horses to the 4 horses of the apocalypse
You are going to so much mental gymnastics to praise a poorly directed and unoriginal movie that presents the humans vs flying saucers theme for the millionth time.
Mentioned this in another comment, but the shoe standing up in the Gordy set is most likely just one of those “bad miracles” they mentioned in the film. Something so bizarre but not impossible that it helped Jupe fixate his attention on it instead of looking directly at Gordy’s eyes (which in hand probably saved his life and gave Jupe the wrong idea that he had a connection with animals). Thanks for the awesome review again!
I thought the shoe pointing up was implying that something mysterious and unseen caused Gordy to snap, just like how the bug was on the camera lense for long enough so the ufo wouldnt be seen. I think there's a much deeper reason as to why Gordy freaked out.
Oh, that's a good way to look at it. I saw it much simpler as The monkey was being controlled by the aliens hence why the shoe was standing up and the balloons were popping after they left the monkey went back to normal noticing what he did and was upset and took off his hat and hit the woman's shoe and that's also why he didn't attack the boy not because they had a "special bondage" or something but because he was no longer being controlled.
One of my favorite scenes was when Emerald first saw the Praying Mantis pop up on the cam. She laughs it off after the initial scare and then immediately darts a look behind her to make sure nothing was there. 😂
I could be wrong but to me I thought that Jupe had never actually done the show before. I thought he had just done it alone several times and was only now starting the show. I think this is what made the alien snap and so it ate them all.
Just got back from the movie. I know people are saying it wasn't really a horror movie but damn, opening scene and then the more detailed scene with Gordy truly frightened me. Nightmare fuel. All executed really well. I also thought the images of people sliding through the ship's insides and hearing their screams was really scary. Lastly, Daniel Kaluya has some really expressive eyes. Interesting that he's the one who avoids eye contact. Just layers and layers of metaphor. I loved it!
I got claustrophobia when all those people were going through the aliens digestive system. And it’s sad how all those people though it was a UFO being abducted by aliens but were just being eaten by the alien. The alien is just a giant shapeshifting life form that can mold itself into looking like a flying saucer so it could be faster. It’s true form looks like a blimp/parachute
The part where everyone got sucked into the mouth of the ufo and then when the ship moved over the house was scarier than the chimp scene. You can hear them all scream and blood came down on the house. That part was more intense to me.
I agreed with the people getting ducked up being scary until we learn it's weak af to things like simple barbed wire and would've died had someone had a pocket knife and just started cutting
One of the best movies I’ve seen in years. I think the monkey trying to give him a fist 👊 pump after eating her face made him think he could be able to tame the aliens but that cost him his life
It's a cool concept but I feel like they could have presented it better instead of just "it's a predator." I felt kind-of underwhelmed that it was THE TWIST, but who knows, maybe on second watch I'll appreciate it more
The movie was fun to watch, but i have to disagree with a lot of people. The monkey scene isn't the scariest scene to me. The scene where the alien is revealed and the negative space that Jordan Peele used scared me the most. It was uncomfortable hearing their screams and the terror knowing they're going to be digested, it's amazing but it's also "Nope. Nope. Nope nope nope nope."
Ricky wasn’t doing the show for six months. He was trying to “train” the alien for that time. That’s why when he came to the Haywood farm he says he wants to invite them to a “new” family show. It was the first time the show went live.
I think you missed some small things that hint to Jupe and the Alien. When he's doing his show and the alien comes up the audience starts taking out their phones to take photos. You can hear his wife start telling them to put their phones away. Also I believe he's been 1 on 1 with the beast for 6 months alone and it hasn't been around a crowd of people. Also, it doesn't take the horse because of the fake horse it at the ranch, that's why I believe it eats Jupe and everyone else because it's pissed off and feels threatened.
You’re right in that he’s been alone with the beast for 6 months because OJ accidentally finds the stadium at night with lights blaring; he’s practicing for the show. Which means he hasn’t done an actual show yet, he’s essentially training the alien for when he decides to actually follow through with doing it.
I think the reason it didn’t take the horse is because the horse didn’t look up, and it also didn’t leave the pen. My belief is that it ate the crowd cause they where looking up and couldn’t take their eyes off of the alien making it angry, even jupe was standing there and staring.
@@CallerID your totally right he took the crowd because they were looking at it, but... If you remember oj and emerald even mention that it was pissed at them because of the horse statue. Sense it's not organic it couldn't swallow the statue it was pissed and shot it out at oj when he was in the truck. It even kept circling the ranch watching them as well. I think this is why I love the movie so much because it has sparked a huge debate around what happened when and where in the film and has the community asking questions.
thats not even a small thing, i cant belive I just watched a video about a guy talking so confidently but missing basic plot points literally explained in the movie multiple times
I think the movie itself was very easy to decipher, though I was the only one in the party able to understand the meaning. I think the worst scene for me, (it wasn't the chimp scene), was the scene were Jupe is doing the show, and Jean Jacket comes out and sucks up everyone. The claustrophobia of the inside of the monster made me SICK. The scenes that are shot from the inside or mouth of the creature were the most unnerving. Mixed with the screams of the people BEGGING for help...that was the worst.
I felt stupid after the movie. During that first scene of people getting sucked up in the creatures' esophagus, I had a thought in my subconscious kinda like.. "That's not what it would like like if you were sucked into a UFO. Wouldn't you at least go into a tunnel? I guess they can't beam people up but if they're sucking people up it sure looks like they're going through some abstract body part. What is going on here" It was terrifyingly claustrophobic and probably one of the scariest moments in the film. You just knew they were about to die because they knew they were about to die, horribly. And then later OJ revealed it WAS the alien creature and I couldn't believe I didn't just put that together myself.
Oh dude same that was awful and unmentioned this but the director they worked with was previously looking over scenes of animals hunting and eating their prey. In one shot we see a snake eating an animal (Or maybe it was a lizard idk) but what gets me is that it foreshadows the running theme of the alien eating it's prey alive.
I believe the reason that Jupiter didn’t have a bigger audience is because that could’ve been like an opening night to reveal his UFO act. When OJ spotted him late at night doing the show, I believe that was just a rehearsal. It probably took him 6 months to learn the habits of the creature and make sure the creature could come reveal itself on time, like clockwork. Almost like training it. This is also kinda backed up by him driving over to invite OJ and Emerald to the “New” family show on Friday AND the scene where he’s in the office with his wife before the show and his wife saying “Ok let’s rehearse it one more time”. And lastly, him and his wife being in shock when the creature shows up earlier than expected since it’s not what they rehearsed
I saw a comment about the shoe on a previous video. There is a saying “waiting for the other shoe to drop. Hence the OTHER shoe is the flying UFO that went around killing any one who looks up. It was bound to happen. Also another point in the movie, the young ricky (played by Steven Yuen) character in the movie, as a child on the set with Gordy you see the shoe standing up facing the sky. Gordy than sees young ricky and walks towards him. The only thing that saved him was the fact that he didn’t look him in the eye(there was a translucent green table cloth blocking their eyes.) so as he got older he has flash backs about the gruesome massacre and he profited off of it(the show room that he had in his office and his disfigured co star was at the show as well) he also thought he had a gift of (taming wild animals) but it back fired. I thinks it’s ironic that he lost his tv family AND his real family because of his naïveness and lack of common sense. No animal deserves to be show cased and treated as an object. The only sensible character was OJ (before his sister knew this is really a dangerous creature but still wanted the money shot.) OJ took care of the horses (hence the panicked in his voice when the reflection was shown to the horse and he almost decapitated the actor) You're only a predator if you intend to eat what you're looking at. Horses can easily tell the difference between a predator looking to eat and predator looking in curiosity and wonder. Horses do, however, struggle to understand the intention of a human who hides his eyes. The UFO Also felt like that and started to attack. The first person the UFO killed was the dad. The dad was curious and turned to the sky and an inanimate object sliced his eye. Another detailed that was interesting in the movie we see different balloons (the balloons that popped on the set that made Gordy go bazerk, the inflatable men and the big air balloon at the end of the of the movie.) The balloons were significant because the were signals for the animals. Gordy went off when the balloons popped, the dancing balloons deflated when the UFO was coming, and it makes since that balloons were important because they got the animals killed. (Gordy getting shot and the UFO swallowing the giant air man.) I feel like the massage was about the fabrication about Hollywood. Back to the beginning on how the crew and cast treated OJ they felt like it was pointless to have a horse training when all they was gonna do was add cgi. ( the red Xs on the horse). The main people in the film were people who were once somebody’s but now not really needed. (The famous show ricky was on, the ranch, the electronic store, and the photographer.) they had little recognition by different kinds of tragedies. ( the monkey massacre, OJ’s father dying, the video store not really needed, and the photographer who was clearly traumatized.) and my final theory, Towards the ending we see OJ has on a orange hoodie and his sister emerald has on a green shirt. ( we see a few times in the movie they stick to those colors.) The color orange represents warning(like a traffic cone or any construction signs) and green represents growth and renewal, being the color of spring and rebirth. (Another association is “getting the green light” to go ahead, giving it an association with taking action.) these colors represents the siblings perfectly, because emerald is vibrant, makes everything fun and is out going, While OJ is cautious, protective, and kinda shows insincerity. The final showdown we see they have on their colors but, the twist is they have on a little piece of the opposite sibling (emerald has on an orange bandanna, while her shirt has orange stripes on her each shoulder. OJ has on his infamous orange hoodie with green eyes on the back of them.)they had a little piece of them. OJ was outgoing and badass when he stood before the beast. And emerald was scared and cautious. This film was BRILLIANT and exciting. Jordan peele put an old style to this movie, slow at first and than going exciting towards the end. We had to really break down this film and really think about the details and the formality. ❤️
In my opinion, I think 'Nope' had a solid pace to it and I absolutely loved how the build up at its height, paid off with the reveal. I was expecting this movie to go in a certain direction, and JP took a sharp left turn, and it went down a different direction. I absolutely LOVED the movie, and can't wait to see it again.
I enjoyed the slow pacing in the beginning but I think that there were some scenes that could have been trimmed. At the same time I appreciate that Peele probably wanted to drag them out on purpose and create tension. It seems that many people automatically do not enjoy slow pacing because they just want to get to the *Spectacle* lol
People in my theater just sat there for a minute after the credits rolled. Like no one moved lol. For a few seconds it was silent then people started talking
@@willwilliams7550 lol! I think if you watch the movie and take it literally, it won’t be an enjoyable experience. It’s not about the alien but what it resembles symbolically. Even the way they defeated it was symbolic to other events in the film. It’s left to your interpretation instead of being hand fed to you
My husband and I sat in silence for about 5 minutes. My eyes were just stuck on the screen 😂Then sat in the theater while the credits rolled trying decipher what we just saw. I heard this movie is so much better the second time around. Can’t wait to go see it again.
I am honestly amazed by how many people can’t grasp the whole Gordy connection. It sets up Jupe’s motivation to try and train a literal alien, and establishes his fatal flaw: trying to course correct his own trauma by monetizing it through similar scenarios, ie trying to control a wild animal/thing. What is less clear is how long Jupe knew about the alien, and how he even discovered it in the first place. I think more scenes establishing that would clear up the confusion about what Gordy has to do with the story.
Oh absolutely. Jordan Peele just a few days ago said the original full length for this movie was about 4 hours, so a lot of scenes were cut out of this movie obviously and unfortunately.
Honestly I think he put the monkey part in to show the Asian kid thought that even a primal beast like that he could bond with. He saw the ufo / alien as the same and if he offered horses he could build a bond with it.
The lines “You can’t tame a predator you have to create an understanding” really made sense after seeing Steven Yuns character fist bump Gordy, maybe that’s why his character didn’t learn from his mistake, maybe he felt like since Gordy didn’t attack him he would be safe trying to do the same thing?
Nope is PEAK CINEMA, man. The Gordy think made me scared, that's why I'm scared of aggresive monkeys. Aside from that, I never expected the UFO being an alien creature, and I LOVED it!
I wouldn't consider this peak cinema... I feel it's needlessly intellectual and has some major plot holes. Beautifully shot... but I wonder if people just hype Peele because they like him.. because if people are honest this film has a lazy and unfocused script... also this isn't horror. This was more action adventure.
@@babyfaceweeb8937 interesting theory.. doesn't make the movie any better... but definitely food for thought. Creature does give off a dinosaur ancient quality
Honestly sometimes with some films just… “fuck the general audience.” I’m so happy that there are still big time directors that believe in their vision and don’t let these big studios fuck up their baby for profit. Films are art and have the right to be divisive, not everyone has to like them. It allows for discussion and that’s ok.
Hey Chris, I’m pretty sure that in the movie Jupe meant that he had came across the alien 6 months ago and had just been training or been visited by it and the star lasso experience was his first time revealing it to the public
Just want to say, after watching a second time, I noticed that jupe said that the Gordy incident was 6 minutes and 13 seconds of havoc. And later said that he saw the saucer for the first time at 6:13pm. There might have been one more 6 and 13 in the movie but idk. Feel like more than twice might’ve been too obvious…but at least twice that number was mentioned.
I was trying to remember where the other 6:13 came from when he mentioned the saucer being seen at 6:13! I completely forgot about that number being used for the Gordy incident. I wonder what the significance of the number is.
@@michaelcarrasquillo4781 I believe it has something to do with the Bible verse Matthew 6:13. Although there are other depictions surrounding the importance of “613”.
Might also be Gematria related, 6 + 13 = 19. The number 19 is associated with chaos. By using the Full Reduction cipher also known as Pythagorean Gematria: C=3 H=8 A=1 O=6 S=1 (3+8+1+6+1) = 19
613 is the mitzvot in the Torah...all of God's commandments 613 of them. Nahum 2:6-13 explains that God is good and the wicked and evil one holding back the chosen people will be smited
Dammit i love Peele, especially for having the balls to just say “eff it, I know some dullards won’t like it but true horror fans devour the fear of the unknown”. I loved this movie. Just appreciate the effort to entertain that every movie presents and you’ll never be disappointed. You might not enjoy a particular movie, but you’ll recognize the effort of what the crew was trying to do.
I believe Gordy is a representation of the Alien itself and how we believe we would try to interact and eventually enslave creatures not being Humans. Which surprise surprise we've dobe that even to other human beings.
Kind of makes sense why that bible verse was shown in the beginning. "I will cast abominable filth upon you, Make you vile, And make you a spectacle" Nahum 3:6
I was honestly waiting for this cause I didn’t catch the metaphors, I didn’t understand the connection with the monkey with the aliens cause the shoe was standing up by itself, and the fact the UFO is the alien was so unique and had itself a weird design. I liked the movie but kinda wished they went more in the horror side but I really liked the film from the cast and the way it’s shot.
The shoe was supposed to be one of those “bad miracles” they mentioned in the film. One of those crazy things that has no real supernatural meaning to it, but it let Jupe fixate his attention on it because of how bizarre it was instead of staring at Gordy in the eyes
@Arcadegamerz_ Exactly. Obviously an elohim or a "fallen one". The wicked seraphim or one of those weird ass angels with weird eyes and physical characteristics. I've watched 4 breakdowns and none of them caught it yet for some reason🤦🏾♂️ Jupe established some kind of covenant with the creature by sacrificing houses to it. Every Friday (the 6th day of the week) at 6pm for 6 months straight he fed the creature a horse at a specific time. 666. In ancient times idol worshippers were VERY METICULOUS with their religious ceremonies and sacrifices. One little screw up would anger the gods and bring ruin. The fake horse was seen by the creature as reneging on the covenant, so it consumed everyone and everything before the usually agreed upon time. Covenants in ancient times between humans and the gods were usually sealed with blood. This is symbolized by Jupiter fist bumping the chimp with the bloody hands. And the shoe suspended pointing upwards during the slaughter had a bloody print on it. OJ alluded to this when he said (paraphrasing) "so one of them just decided to come down from up there and check out what was going on down here".
In case you didn't catch it, Gordy is possibly based off of a real life case very similar to Gordy's rampage, which is the case of Travis The Chimp. Travis snapped in 2009, and began to maul the owners' friends' face and body. The woman's hands and face had been fully disfigured. You can find a video of her, revealing her disfigured face, for the first time ever right here on RU-vid, where she showed her face in an Oprah Winfrey interview. The biggest hint that the Gordy scene was based off of Travis the Chimp was how both chimps mauled a victims face, while the victim still survived, covering their disfigured appearance with a veiled hat. But I Don't know, maybe it is just a chimp.
Another thing I noticed that during the scene when we see the director, he's going over footage of predators and the eyes of animals. The movie focuses on a scene in his editing room of a snake eating an animal. Later we see the horror of the people from Jupiter's claim getting sucked up and going through the digestive tract of the alien reminiscent of how horrifying it must be to be eaten alive similar to those in the wild. Infact the whole eaten alive deal is highlighted with Gordy's scenes where he's eating a woman alive on set.
It was a friends and family (and media) show. First time with an audiance. First time the alien had this many to eat. And too much. That is why it bleed out (puked?) on the house soon after.
My understanding of the timeline is that the Jupe discovered the UFO 6 months ago and that it only fed on Friday. 24 interactions in that time, it probably took him 3 weeks to find the pattern. A few more weeks to verify and start building the arena, then a few weeks to practice. So when he came to give him the flyer it was like a preview night for “friends and family” a soft opening. I don’t think Jupe had gone public yet, i think that’s why the farm didn’t know and why the public didn’t know.
This makes a lot of sense. I was trying to figure out the timeline because they throw numbers around a bit so I know that OJ sold 10 horses to Jupe so you could put that into the equation that at least 10 weeks or 2.5 months had gone by of training sessions with the alien using just Haywood horses.
My favorite part of the movie is design of the alien itself. When it fully reveals itself in the closing arc it’s incomprehensible and hard to decipher which I really like. I hope more alien flicks decide to go with more abstract designs like this movie did.
I haven’t had good experiences with alien movies, just felt like no one did them right. When I heard Peele was getting involved, I knew it was going to be good.
Really enjoyed this movie! One thing I love about Peele's movies is they always give you plenty to chew on, even after the movie is done. My interpretation is that Gordy's story is a parallel of Jean Jacket's story. Both are wild animals that are trying to survive and cope in a place that isn't their natural habitat. Both are being exploited as spectacles by people who believe they know enough about how to handle them. They know the "rules" and therefore think they have it under control. Everyone involved (Cast/Crew/Even the Audience) are fully aware that this is a dangerous situation, being around Gordy/Jean Jacket, and still play along for the sake of spectacle. They also never acknowledge that they are also putting the animals in stressful situations or that they are endangering them as well. Something happens that triggers a reaction and makes it all spiral out of control, ending in tragedy. The popping of the balloons causes Gordy to freak out and attack everyone in the studio. Jean Jacket is hurting from swallowing something it shouldn't have, so when it gets looked at by all these people, it attacks the whole park. The survivors seek refuge and wait for "the shoe to drop". That seemingly inevitable moment where they'll become the next victim. The only reason they don't is that they don't look the aggressive animal in the eye and manage to hide long enough for it to pass. This was Jupiter hiding under the table with the table cloth blocking his eyes. OJ was in the truck, while Emerald and Angel were in the house as Jean Jacket bled everywhere and spat out all of its undigested contents. The creature does get agitated and keeps lashing out until it too gets "popped". Gordy's co-stars looking him in the eye and making sounds get him to keep lashing out, and eventually gets "popped" by police. Jean Jacket is also repeatedly antagonized by loud music and having people keep looking it in the eye, until it gets quite literally "popped" (ironically) by a balloon. And, even after the tragedy is all set and done, there are people still eager to profit and make an even bigger spectacle of it. Even by the survivors. Jupiter has a whole back room he charges fees for people to see and the whole incident was even played for laughs on SNL. And the ranchers aren't innocent either. Emerald risks so much just to get a clear snapshot of Jean Jacket before its death, which you know is going to be sold to the very media clamoring behind the police tape that have been so eager to report on the deaths of 40 people. It's a vicious cycle where nobody is entirely innocent. In the movie, everyone has their own justification for making this all such a spectacle. For Jupiter: Profit. For Emerald: Fame. For OJ: Sustaining his lifestyle. For Antlers: The Art. And even though Angel wants reassurance that they're doing this for the right reasons, he started doing all of this because he wasn't happy with his life and wanted to be part of something bigger. Also another thing I feel keeps getting overlooked is that people are animals too. All of us have emotions and all of us have a breaking point. Exploitation for entertainment is everywhere and it shouldn't get pushed to the point of tragedy before we start caring about the well-being of everyone involved.
Even till this day I feel so bad for the lady who got beat up by the monkey. And before the movie came out people kept saying she's a alien in disguise
Yeah it was so confusing to know what was going on in the trailer and seeing it make sense now, it was such a subverted expectation. I had no clue what her part in the movie was gonna be.
Michael Abel’s score was amazing for me. And I love the scene when Keke Palmer’s character was riding the motorcycle and she did the famous akira shot.
It's rare to have an intellectual horror/sci-fi gifted to us. I love when a movie stays with me for days or weeks and hopefully years!! J.P. is our new cinema god!!!
The movie was great although I did wish the alien were 2 legged creatures. The scene with the kids in the costumes scared the F out of me. I was left wanting more of that
@@FrightKnight17 I believe it's not meant to be a horror, but more of a thriller mixed with action. I presume that you may have had different genre expectations for the move or taken it the wrong way.
I am right there with not knowing if I liked it or not. The alien was creepy but the Gordo storyline scared me more. I was disappointed that Steven Yeung’s character wasn’t utilized more to connect that backstory to the story as a whole. I didn’t hate but I didn’t love it. It’s a thinker for sure lol
I believe Jupe was actually feeding the humans to the alien as well, because of you watch the scene of him “practicing” his show you see little objects go into the sky (humans) so I think Jupe was feeding the monster the horses and humans and that’s why the crowd wasnt as big because word wasnt getting out to the world.
@@diegoreynoso5407 well in the beginning of the movie it’s said that there are a few missing hikers in the area so Jean jacket probably ate them out in the mountains
@@DavidTheDeveloper it was said to be territorial and OJ tried to tell his sister that the alien thinks that that area is it’s home but the Walkie-Talkie went out due to the alien being in the area.
I loved how I went into it thinking it was aliens on the ship but turning out to be the ship was an alien. I think that was a great twist, and I love how most of the movie you don't even see the ship/alien much it's a good way to build your creature. Show your creature when it matters not just because you have to.
Did you know that the message in the beginning of the movie was the real theme of this movie because in the movie, it talks about Nahum 3:6 but the meaning and the background about it was a bit crazy and bizarre. So Peele made this movie to based on that message like a Bible verse to life in this movie. Here are the moments 1. The bizarre spacecraft is the city called Nineveh because the spacecraft eats the living things and then spits it's out just like the city because Nahum talks about something spectacle or unusual about that city. The city is full of liars or sinners that leads everyone to death but something mysterious happened in the city. A city full of puddles of blood and deaths that are not explained. So the city eats or you enter the city and then it's spits it's out like someone came out of that city filled with blood. 2. The characters are Nahum and Zephaniah because they saw the people in that city are very sinful but they never knew that when they got out from that city, it went suddenly mysteriously quiet in that city. They saw the city filled with blood of the city folk and they feel guilty for getting out of the city. Nahum thinks that God punish all the city folk that are sinners. 3. In the beginning of the movie, that message means that all the sins or guiltiness will be thrown at you to make you sinful or cursed and then, to make you unusual to see like the spacecraft or the animal incidents doesn't like to be look at or controlled by someone or something. 4. The themes of this movie is we can't unsee things that are spectacle or very unusual to us and the other theme is the obsession of using living things that considered to be tamed just like the spacecraft, the horse and the chimpanzee to entertain us or use for entertainment for purposes because it will take a big risk or sacrifice for things that are bit wild or spectacle or unusual. Some people think that if it is worth for taking a big risk or sacrifice for something else that considered to be tamed. 5. The spacecraft is not a UFO, it is a alien entity that took a form of a jellyfish or a blanket of death of reality or a metaphor of spectacle.
When I watched the movie, and we learned the UFO was the alien, I thought about it and honestly I can believe it. For people who watch Young Justice, look at the Bio-Ship it's an alien and species it's self. Idk I just found that twist pretty cool.
As an alien fan and believer, I really didn’t like NOPE. I think it was mostly the ufo twist. I also think that it was the scene where the three little kids pranks Daniels character. The scene was VERY well executed, but when they reveal that it was a group of pranksters, my hope for the movie went down by 40% because they teased that scene so little in the trailers and I really wanted to see the aliens more.
The whole purpose of the chimp scene is that you can’t control/train predators. The chimp was a predator and so was the badly designed Pokémon alien creature thing
This is one of those movies you'll need to see multiple times to pick up more and more overlooked and subtle clues. I just happened to hear/notice Otis Sr/ Keith David say that the horse named "Ghost" is very territorial. Bad move (territoriality) with an also territorial alien. Ghost had a key 🔑 sticking out of his flesh. The alien MAY HAVE been trying to kill Ghost and accidentally killed Otis Sr. 🤔 Thoughts?
I think if the alien wanted to kill Ghost it would’ve just sucked it up, it had no reason to fear eating horses because at that point it had not eaten a fake horse; but at the same I agree with you because I don’t think Peele would have added that territorial dialogue for no reason. But shit I don’t even know man
I think the territorial part was dropping "waste" (the non-organic matter) to mark the territory near Ghost which just happened to be on Otis Sr. as well. Because the blood rain with all the crowd's items was definitely JJ marking the house as it's territory.
I don’t think the alien was trying to kill Ghost. I think they were caught up in the detritus the alien was spewing out. I think ghost being territorial was the literal key theme that tied into the motive of the alien. A bit on the nose maybe idk
I couldn't help but notice the big metal scissors on Steven Yeuns desk in his office while he was talking to Daniel. They were the same kind of scissors from the movie Us. They were sheathed but they were the same ones. They weren't on the desk laying down they were positioned upright towards the camera too. Definitely were put there for that reason
Naw, that was the first time Jupiter was going to show off the UAP, he came to the farm to give them the flyers because it was the grand opening for his new show. There was barely anyone at the show because no one expected it to be a UAP.
Gordy also saw his reflection in the baloons like the horse did in the beginning that’s why he snapped which is also why we hear the baloons popping when he attacked them
*SPOILERS* The screams of excruciating pain coming from the inside of the ship’s “belly” as it rained blood on the house was f u c k i n g dark. They were being tortured in there. Straight-up tortured. And to make it worse it was all a very slow process of being ground/melted into nothing…holy shit this movie is insane. Probably the most engrossing film of Peele’s lineup at this point. At least next to Get Out (which also had a very shocking twist).
2:15 Peele is completely right here. When watching nope and the people get sucked up, what got to me most was me trying to understand what was happening, and if they were being digested and shit. That really caused me to be tripped out by it
I really need to keep telling myself that when watching a film made by Jordan Peele you gotta watch it with an artist level of thinking in terms of what the message is. Get Out was all about things not being what they appeared to be. I think US was that everyone is connected in a way. And Nope was about being kinder to animals and to be more careful when training them. Sort of like a Dos and Donts lesson.
Yes, I loved it. Great mix of sci-fi, horror, and comedy. Once I knew the themes he explored it made me love it even more. Maybe 20 minutes too long tho.
The small audience for the alien show is actually just fine. While they have known its been there for 6 months, it was the first time he has ever shown an audience, so nobody would have known about it yet.
That is exactly why Peele starts the movie headlining the scripture verse, "I will pelt you with filth and treat you with contempt; I will make a spectacle of you." Just like in King Kong, usually when somebody sees a tower size of a terrifying gorilla, you get the hell outta there immediately. But no, they wanted to capture the creature and make a spectacle out of it calling it, "Kong the 8th Wonder of the World." But, what about the shoe? Why did it stand up like that on the stage during that scene, as if it was standing on its own?
This movie was incredible. Actually was terrified of the monkey and it was even based on a real life event. That's crazy. The alien was also terrifying especially when they showed the people inside....
I was a bit disappointed until I watched it again and figured everything out. Now I absolutely LOVE it. First viewing, I have it a 7. Now I give it a 9.5! Also, I really relate to OJ. He’s jaded from always having to deal with the consequences of everyone else’s bad choices. He warns people not to do certain things, but they do it anyway.
it is a direct connection. the organism had a severe reaction w all the animals in the movie. the field that the organism gives off made the ape go crazy meaning it was nearby. same w the horses and the praying mantis...
I think it’s pretty interesting how the alien merchandise looked a lot like a chimpanzee when you look closely. It could possibly show how his trauma affected him, I mean he most likely came up with the aliens design. He probably thought they looked scary.
Just saw this movie and it was actually great like I expected it to be. The "UFO" scenes gave me chills especially those poor people at the theme park that got ate up and turned into a bunch of "fruit punch" which I found quite disturbing and I loved the "UFO"'s true form honestly. The "aliens in the barn" had me thinking, already we're seeing them until it was just a bunch of kids playing a prank. Other than that, I'd definetly watch it again.
I thought it was interesting that Daniel's character name was OJ. Anyone who lived through the 90s knows what a SPECTACLE the whole OJ cases was. Also you see OJ riding horses....BRANCO? Nice touch Jordan👍
I absolutely loved it!! The twist was done great! For the audience I think it was the first show he was performing the show, hoping to capture his lost fame and with the theme showing when feeling threatened animals will protect themselves, like when the horse kicked its back legs when seeing it’s reflection on the movie set, Gordy with the pop of the balloons and the creature in the sky when people looked at it and when it thought it was fed the fake horse on purpose
I loved this film, it was amazing- but I have a different reason onto why the monkey scene happened. I think it was because the alien flew over the production of the episode, and triggered something in the monkey to kill those people. This theory is supported by the horses getting something triggered in them because of the alien.
I digged the review! For me the movie didn't feel to long, the pacing felt good, the mainly slow burn moments was the suspense because some suspense got drown out to when it happen, it catches you off guard, for example when the Ship dropped the fake onto OJ truck it legitimately jump scared me because the suspense moment dragged out for the right amount of time. This is definitely a movie that needs to be watched I'd say twice in theaters then other times at home to full disgust it all.
Also the balloons going off when the monkey lost his mind and Steven makes a fist bump reflected the ending. Steven ballon gets close for fist bump and ends up popping my boi
2:15 the clip where Peele is talking about audiences expectations he is wearing an owl shirt and that looks alot like the "Alien" design Jupe was selling.
I thought Jupe was practicing during the night and feeding the alien. He didn’t do his first show until the one we actually saw. Plus, maybe the alien was pissed off because it ate that metal horse and thought Jupe was screwing with him. That’s why he snapped and ate everyone.
Now I really want to see a horror movie where it’s a mix of the gordy brutally killing his “co stars” scene and the raptors in the kitchen scene from Jurassic park. Like a movie where a wild animal that is being used for human gain (monetarily would make the most sense, or a metaphor could be used referring to money). All of a sudden one day, it breaks loose/snaps, I personally think it would be cool if like gordy it was seen as a trusted and “loved” part of the crew, with lots of “good memories” showing up in flashbacks making it more terrifying that someone you love can do have trouble things to you. Basically a movie with a realistic animal, not some monster, that is on a bloodlust rampage through a film set or industrial esc area, with a bunch of the people previously close to it, hiding and running for their lives.
after i watched the movie i was so confused and honestly upset bc i really love jordan peele and his work, and i didn’t really understand this movie and was so confused the whole time ( i always loved the show “the walking dead” so i was so excited to see Steven in this movie) but seeing the deeper meaning really creeps me out so much, from the monkey to the alien to the screaming people . this honestly is one of my favorite movies now , i think it would be a lot better if it explained it a little better , but amazing movie . i’ve never seen anything like it . if you’re going to see this movie , you should read some non spoilers to understand and get a raw reaction.
i think there is an interesting dichotomy between OJ and Jupe. OJ, who is soft spoken and calm, has a true connection with animals and a poor connection with people, and jupe, who has a poor connection with animals and a good connection with people. OJ’s knowledge of how to handle animals saved him from jean jacket.
My thoughts: I interpreted the alien show as the first public showing. Jupe's been feeding it horses for six months, he thought he had it under control. Lucky, true to his name, refused to cooperate to be eaten by the giant flying predator. I find the story kind of tragic. Jeanie had its behavior manipulated by someone who had no clue what the normal behavior of said creature was supposed to be, was turned into a spectacle, and lashed out in anger and confusion. It had to be put down, I don't blame Em for doing so. Like many wild animals that someone attempted to tame to exploit it was a danger and putting it down was a mercy. But imagine if actual behavioral scientists and biologists studied it for those six months with an emphasis on not interfering with its life, then they got David Attenborough in a ghillie suit to narrate their findings? Genie would be majestic and awe-inspiring.
This explanation video helped so much because I was so confused watching the movie! I'm on the autism spectrum and I struggle with metaphors so the explanation was very helpful!
The only question I came out with what was that box ?? In the beginning of the movie and when the people get abducted and you see them in the ufo it shows a box . Is that the aliens heart or ??
I think that was his first live show with an audience of " the starlight experience" that's why he was so nervous and that's why he had a flyer to invite the Heywood. The lights we saw before were training.
My only thought to your video is, I believe when Jupe came to deliver the flyer, he said he was inviting them or his “first live show” so he had been practicing but had not had any shows yet. That’s if I remember correctly.
I think Jean Jacket was kept a secret by Jupiter for the 6 months he was feeding it. The show we see him put on in the movie was the debut, probably after Jupe figured out JJ wasn’t going anywhere if it was promised food. Hence why no one knew about it up till then. That being said, is it safe to say that Jupe is indirectly responsible for Otis Sr’s death since Jupe was the one feeding JJ? Who knows
I was hoping we'd see actual aliens but I guess we got close to that with the kids pranking OJ. Still a pretty terrifying scene tho. However I did think it was pretty interesting that the UFO itself WAS the alien and not a ship Edit: oke I just realized my mistake. I know the UFO was the alien but when I said that I hoped we'd see "actual aliens" I meant like the stereotypical big head and big eyed humanoid aliens. Somewhat similar to the costumes the kids were wearing
I was highly anticipating this movie because I love Jordan Peele. I came out not knowing if I thought it was good or bad. It was so different than anything I’ve seen before, and thought it was kinda weird. I’m still trying to formulate my opinion, and I got a little scared throughout 😂
I know it for symbolic purposes more than story purposes but the Chimp scenes scared the shit out of me, ever since I heard about the Charla Nash incident in 2009 I've been scared of chimps even to this day. Add in my fear of aliens and honestly to me personally this is Jordan's most terrifying movie. At first I was disappointed in the UFO twist but after sitting on it after I got home I really like it, this is probably my favorite Peele movie.
Same. As a kid growing up in CT in 2009, I remember hearing about the Charla Nash mauling nonstop. The second the movie opened and I saw Gordy with bloodied hands and snout, I was rocked to my core.
I also have always had this fear because of that story and remember seeing her on Oprah... After the movie I pieced together the chimp Gordy, the actress in the veil during the lasso show, and the "Oprah shot" to be connected to the real life story... On Oprah's show she "got the shot" if you want to say it that way when Charla revealed her face during their interview post the attack. The interview was eerie to watch back after this movie because Oprah is basically like well now your face was shown here on my show so everyone else now will know what you look like. Idk it maybe has no correlation but just sat with me post watching Nope since there is commentary to me about egos in Hollywood and exploitation.
@@AmyAnnetteHenion I’m from CT too and I heard that story’s and they showed her on TV afterwards and I couldn’t look. So disturbing!! The monkey reminded me of that too
Movie was great! Not quiet how I thought it would turn out. It’s just mind boggling to see how all our theories from the moment they released the trailer back on Super Bowl night just got completely shut down which I’m okay with. I had envisioned that we were actually gonna see aliens and at some point they were going to explain what they were doing on earth kinda like how the tethered woman gave an explanation for what was happening in “Us”. But the fact that the UFO was the alien was very different but a great surprise!
AWESOME MOVIE!!! I loved what message that Jordan Peele was able to tell with this movie. And the scenes with the UFO Alien looks so good with the VFX. It even helped with the suspenseful scenes at night with the UFO making it even more terrifying and immediateing for me because we know what this thing is capable of. AND THE GENIUS OF THE UFO BEING THE ALIEN THE WHOLE TIME IS AWESOME AND SOMETHING NEW NO FILMMAKER I'VE SEEN DONE THIS!!!! 10/10. A new modern classic by Jordan Peele. Well done.
I’m so glad that you understood the reason Gordy was an arc in the film. I feel like a lot of other people that have reviewed the movie missed that point.
