Customer said refrigerator is not getting cold.
This is the first DC refrigerator that I have worked on. Shocker, right? Don't be too hard on me, I was learning on this one. You might be surprised to see what I found.

Great video. I've only worked on one it was an Ever- Chill. The customer had the fan in the freezer blocked so it wouldn't cool the fridge compartment. We have alot of seasonal campers here that leave their rv's in the same place year after year. Those customers will usually have me install a household fridge. Way cheaper. Thanks for the video.

I understand about the throw away. Mine lasted 3 yrs 3 months.. Go figure 😅 it's the exact unit , Nov 2020. Awesome video!

I haven't heard anything good about them here at my shop. Ever chill is another brand that I keep hearing about that keep failing. Never understand why these companies can't just leave some things alone. I service an 1985 dometic gas /electric every season , fires up every season no problem. What a waste of your time to have to jump through all them hoops just to find out it's junk. Good work, keep at it.

I have a 12 vdc fridge (Norcold) in our rv. The fridge part was getting too cold (28). I had to replace the thermistor in the fridge because there was very little resistance measured when I put it in ice water.

I've had a couple, the one I'm using full time now which is factory 1994 model ,I've never had a issue, the one I had in my previous RV didn't work and I never could get in touch with norco,but it wasn't working when I bought that rv ,also had 2 others that worked fine ,so I really can't complain except costumer service sucked.

A wise tech gave me some advice. If your 12v fridge takes a dump, chunk it and buy a regular house type fridge. Install a stand alone inverter to convert 12v dc to 120ac. The board that usually goes bad is a cheap inverter. The stand alone will last forever….

I was under the impression that they were true 12 volt compressors on them. They also make 12 volt air conditioners too.

Thanks for the video. I was thinking to switch to a 12 volt refrigerator if and when my Dometic RM2852 refrigerator dies. But after watching I think I just go with a 120 volt unit. Question could you have ran 12 volts to the compressor to see if it worked. Would be nice if they spent .50¢ on an LED and another .50¢ on a button for running diagnostics.

I’m assuming that Norcold is like most 12v fridges….You have a regular 120v fridge with a control board that is basically a cheap inverter. You should have 12v going in the board and 120ac coming out to the compressor..

I had 7.4 volts out to the compressor across all 3 leads to ground...

It should be around 13 volts if RV is plugged in and converter is working properly.

I would have unplugged one at a time, plugged it into the new board and repeated the process until everything was swapped over. I guess that's the difference between a rookie and a Professional. 🤣 So what was the outcome, was it toast???

They pay 1.5 labor ,but they don't pay the 5 hrs your on hold and filling out paper work. I hate all these companies that think there doing you a favor. When I call norcold at my shop if I'm not in the top 4 I can't wait, they take way to long. That tells me that they don't have enough people to handle all there garbage products.

Its the exact same issue at auto manufacturers help line. Last dealer i worked at they insisted i call the honda techline and half the time i knee more than they did and woukd ak that i call back when i resolve the issue. Sorry honda already didnt pay daig under warranty im not spending my free time to give them the answer for free. I live just a county down from norcold and wouldnt mind leaving mine on their door with a naty note its less than 3 years old and already failed. Hard to beleive they charge much for such cheap fridge ans they havr gone all in on 12 and discontinued the gas electric fridges

Same fridge. Compressor will not start but, it tries to. Just jerks and dims the lights when it tries to. Died at two months of ownership. Went to Costco and grabbed a mini for 79. Norcold is the worst to deal with.

Everything I hear is, "Junk". The other brand, "Ever Chill" is disposable. There are no parts to be found. The whole industry rushed into this 12v fridge thing way too fast. I personally only had one call but couldn't work on it because I wasn't registered yet with the manufacturer to be a dealer. I can honestly say, I was not disappointed.

I have the same fridge. Only cools with the thermistor unplugged. Waiting on new thermistor to be delivered see if that fixes it.

I keep researching these 12v fridges, including the furrion and even GE to replace my old Norcold. Would you even consider purchasing one of these with what you know as an RV tech? They have had them in boats for years, but the RV models seem to have a short life span. Thoughts?

Short lifespan. You just nailed it. That is why I am not a fan of them.

Ohm out compressor by testing the three pins touch two get reading and repeat until all three readings are achieved the two smaller readings should equal the largest reading also ohm each leg to ground should be no continuity, also ohm out thermistor it may not be calling for cooling

The LED said the compressor motor is bad. Norcold is sending new refrigerator under warranty.

Did I ever relate to your phone experience with Norcold. There times I got to a human and cut off during transfer to someone else. Hard for me to say anything good about them. Charles

How hard would it be to replace the compressor on the Norcold N8DC 12v fridge? Can it even be done? I'm familiar with soldering/brazing and gassing up with freon

@@stevefuchs5868 Norcold replaced this refrigerator under warranty. My friends in the RV business don't like any of the DC refrigerators. I have only worked on 2 and both were bad and just got a complete replacement.

You can use a test light, but it won't give you voltages. Sometimes you need to know how many volts you have.

I doubt if you could ever get one. They don’t have any parts for these things.

I have this exact fridge in my keystone 2021 and our fridge no longer cools. Horrible. I’ve not found any good reviews about it at all.

Customer got new one. There are almost no serviceable parts on these things. They are disposable.

It's a closed system, but yes, it can be done, I guess. Not easy or cheap. Norcold replaced refrigerator for free, that was much better.

@@hillbillyrv yes, understandable if it's warrantied why bother fixing it for the customer, just replace it. But couldn't you keep the old one and fix it for yourself? It's like a $2000 cdn fridge.

Yes that fridge is not my favorite but it’s better than the 12v neverchill. Also I have a manual library for tons of stuff if you hit that bump again give me a call and I’ll see if I can help you out.

@@NigelM18 maybe hillbilly has some input for you. I personally have never had any dealings with them @ the dealership I work @. Which does kinda throw a red flag for me since we deal in so many brands of coaches and none are coming in with that brand fridge. That’s not to say that I am right either mfg may be burning up contracts who knows?

@@marcuscarmouche9023 I appreciate the quick response. Unique markets themselves as a solar fridge more for off grid cabins but people have thrown them in rv's. They also have a perfect fitting 10cu ft model. No travel lock but there are ways around that.
