Last year, I was putzing about on Craigslist here in Vancouver and came across a Piano 4. My wife is a pianist but her old upright resides at her parents place on Vancouver Island. And we live in a small apartment. Needless to say, we contacted the seller and were at his house inside of 2 hours. She tried out the piano (never thought that a digital piano would be anything like her real one), and straight up gave the man his price. He gave us the stand, and the pedals and a gig bag, too. She's never looked back, and I enjoy plinking around on it too. Absolutely brilliant instrument, and we'll be keeping ours for forever. And Jack? You are a stellar human being!
I just don't understand why Nord would put s much effort into making flutes, guitars and vintage synth samples sound more realistic--and then not bother putting on a pitch bend or mod wheel. It(s not like they can't charge for it. But they'd rather force people to shell out for the Stage to get simple functionality. This is one reason why people hate Nords.
The keybeds aren’t as good either as say the Yamaha CP88. I’ve owned a Nord Piano and Stage 2. Got rid of them. The best Nord in my view is the Electro 6D with a very good waterfall keyboard and a great range for splits. The pianos are still nit great, but the organ is brilliant and very playable. I dumped all the piano samples. They’re not good. Even the Roland RD800 and RD2000 are better for piano, than the Nord. Biggest issue of all... the high price point.
@@geecen If it's ever only going to be a piano, than why put on the guitar, flute and synth samples? And then brag about how much more realistic they are than before (even though you can't play them in realistic way without a bender)? If it's only a piano, than why is the action so bad? And if it's only ever a piano and never somebody's master keyboard, than why put MIDI and USB ports on it? It's just a piano doesn't pass the smell test, and it's no excuse. Especially at this price point.
Hi Pianoman, thanks for watching mate. Good point! In all honesty just didn’t even cross my mind but thanks for bringing it up, might make for a good follow up video. All of the bestest X
Given that it gives us the option of layering 2 pianos that is a huge plus in order to obtain special characteristics of the sound.Weigt also, just 15 kiosl ,for the 73 keys version.Which will cover most of the music , even from classic repertoire.Beethoven had even less.As about mechanics.....when I hear all the ''golden fingers'' comments that's laughable.Just play. The cheapest digital has a better mechanic and even sound than an 18 th century piano.Etc.People should just practice and play on what they can afford. It's not a drama if you can't buy the Nord Grand.Absolutely.Or the Nord 5 .
@@jackduxbury1632 A comparison between the new Nord Piano 5 and the Nord Grand might help viewers to comprehend both instruments and Clavias developement better.
I’m trying to decide between the two (Grand and Piano 5), I live 2 hours from a store that has them both on display, I’m trying to make time to go. A comparison between the two would be great. I’m wondering if the key action on the grand would tip it for me, I’m leaning towards the piano 5 at the moment.
Great review/presentation as always Jack BUT!!!! Fix that flippin' table! I actually started to get motion sickness on those over-head shots especially. You deserve better and so do we.
With Nord piano it’s all about the feel. The sounds are great. It’s the action that in the past has been lacking. I know that’s subjective but if the keys do not snap aback fast enough like on a quality grand it’s a deal breaker for me
Looks awesome and sounds awesome. I'm mainly interested in the ability to do single note trills/FAST single-note repetition as you briefly demonstrated there (like only a real Grand Piano with maintained repetition springs can do). How does this ability truly pan out? And, how does the keybed compare with Nord's own "Stage Grand" Piano (at near the same price of the 5) in this manner?
Nord is next level. Those who don’t think pianos sound good must be deaf. Every other digital piano sounds like a digital piano. Only the Nord has the full resonance that makes the pianos sound alive like a real piano. The Roland SN sounds are super artificial sounding. Yamaha still sounds like a boxed in short decay, no resonance sample. Only Kawai’s latest samples are really top notch. Nord has the details and the variety nobody else can touch.
How do you like the piano vs the grand or the stage? I’d love a real feeling keybed. Also do you think these new features mean a Grand 2 is already on the horizon?
Neither one got a real feeling action. Fatar action is awful. The Grand features a Kawai action though but it feels terrible to be honest. Kind of RHIII version but cheaper, lighter and worse overall. NP5 action not good either.
@@mlgl9728 To me they don't feel horrible. The Nord Grand Action is quite good and if pianist have to choose a digital piano, they very often will choose the Grand. If you play a Bösendorfer or Steinway (Renner) action taken out of the piano, they also do not really feel great. My experience is, that you need the sound along with the action for it to feel good. So ... trying a Nord Grand or Nord 5 without sound will give you a funny impression - and you probably won't like any action. Try it with a good PA system or headphones and the feel will be very different ...
@@outerrim That's just nonsense. Play a Kawai MP11SE (which has Kawai's best full-length wooden action) and then play any kind of Nord. It's just no comparison. Even the action on a Roland RD2000 or Yamaha CP88 is leagues better. You can argue about whether Nord has the best sound, but they definitely lose out on action and price.
So I recently bought a Yamaha CP-88 as a dedicated stage instrument for solo piano gigs and live streams. The keybed felt amazing, but I found myself using only two pianos consistently. The rest of the sounds remained forever unused. The effects also seemed limited at that price point. So I was looking at Piano 4 for the interchangeable sounds, but didn't see enough there to justify the price difference. Especially since the Yamaha had dual, even triple layers. Welp... Piano 5 gets announced with independent dual layers and even more effects. Sold. Can't wait to get my hands on one, but they're all on pre-order. :)
@@stevenhartwell Eh, I never use any organs, pitch modulators, etc. in my pieces. Stage would be ideal for that, no doubt! I'm just looking for something that really makes me feel and hear like I'm playing a real piano - or as close as we can get.
How can a bunch of mass produced circuit boards and a keyboard cost over $3500.00? 54 years of playing keyboard....I am still waiting for a hardware digital piano that sounds like a computer software piano like Ivory. For those buying a Dpiano we are going to spend 99.9% of our time with an acoustic piano sample/model, yet only 1% of the review is on the piano.
Hey Lol - we were just talking about that today whilst filming! A lot of the time I have to do the videos that pertain to the latest products and with the shop becoming a Behringer “Uber” dealer I just haven’t had any time to film the next video. As soon as I get a second I will, running out of time before my Birthday innit!! 🎂 I had the idea of doing a live stream, get them all plugged in and let everyone in on the decision making process and get all the great advice that the community has. Anyways, thanks for watching mate and leaving a comment, all my best Xx
Jack Duxbury yes.... you aren't getting any younger. I am 55 so take it from me, it all goes in the blink of an eye from here on.... anyway after all the synths you get to play I would have thought you have a good idea what you want.... so Matriarch and Polybrute it is then.... 😉
Couldn't you just make a split using a Nord with a single layer sampler using the Nord Sample Editor? Additionally, any firmware could be added to single layer sampler to older models that would allow this split directly on the hardware. Kind of fucked up. Again, marginal non-improvements at the expense of them going OUT OF THEIR WAY to reduce the feature set of the general midi implementation against the sampler by removing features like pitch bend. Criminal. They continue to get 3rd parties to do their marketing for them so they can stay above scrutiny. Thanks for the extra sampler layer that competitors Roland and Yamaha include in every product already, but one thing is for sure. I don't want, need, or can even conceive of a use for mixing 2 of the Nord Piano engine layers together at the same time -- only need one. What is the point of allowing firmware updates if you aren't going to back port new features to existing products? Answer: Fixing the crap you left broken when you initially shipped the product. Have you read any of the responses to posts that bring up similar concerns on the Nord User Forum? The OPs are immediately ostracized by their legion of Nord fanboys to the point where I now perceive musicians that are strictly keyboard players as persona non grata.
Nice product for live gigs for a great piano you can take with you. For studio use Vienna Symphonic Library's Syncrhon Piano Series are outstanding and the go to for professionals, however they require a computer, high quality audio interface, and studio work flow. I believe Kawaii has manufactured the 3 contact point Nord keyboard based around the Kawai VPC1 which I highly recommend so this Nord keybed is likely fantastic.
You sound great! The piano sounds awesome! You make it sound great! This sounds like the perfect imstrument for me. Your an inspiration for creating great music! This will be my first Nord purchase! Thank you!
No real comments on the new action and how to feels compared to the previous irritation, nord own grand or the competition at this price point, slightly disappointing given that outside the sound the action is the next most important element.
Thanks for watching Jd and for your comment mate. I totally understand your point and hopefully I remember to comment more an the action in the future as your not the only person who’s brought this up. Problem is that I personally never even think about the action unless it’s really prohibitive to my playing. I’ll try to be better in the future at at least giving my take on it - thanks again - really appreciate the feedback Xx
I got my NP5 two weeks ago. Love it! The unison function works very well on choir sounds. On synth sounds it does not so much. I think the new nsmp4 format will come to NP4 and stage 3 and latest electro as well.
After watching this vid my initial thoughts are: if the Piano 5 has new features which are quite desirable, can/ will they be added to the current Nord Stage (3) and Nord Grand via updates, or would we have to wait for newer versions of those keyboards to be released to get them?
Honestly they should just update the boards instead of making new products there is really no need. I have a feeling the stage 4 will be same as the stage 3 with minor improvements again….Nord= Apple of Keyboards…great product minor improvements and remain the same for years. They make new products just to add the smallest things when they could just make an update lol.
Apparently nord modells are equipped with a lot of tones and effects which are cool but do they have “Styles”like other keyboards/digital piano, if yes which model?
I am really surprised - if not baffled! Why? Well.. they obviously included functions that are absolute standard in other instruments since a couple of years: Round robbin for repeated notes, Key resonance, etc. etc. - I honestly assumed that Nord had all that already. Nothing really astonishing in this keyboard - except for the price :). A great instrument, anyways.
Jack what do you use to amplify your Nord Piano 5? I just bought it and I'm using a pair of Yamaha Stagepas 400i 400W Portable PA with Reverb-equipped 8-channel Mixer, Two speakers with 8" LF/1" HF drivers and the sounds is not what I hear on your videos. Should I upgrade my speakers to something else?
I think, nord make Instruments for the Worship musicians. It sounds like the most usual Patches for Most of the musicians they Play in churches. Quiet not the classical Fake-Instruments. Unusual sounds should not come out of an Nord so named „Piano“. In my opinium you should use an additional Synth for extra sounds.
