I'm going mono a mono with a few of my FOH engineer friends in this quick tip that's more opinion than tip. But we'll talk about how to change your NORD STAGE FOUR output from mono to stereo and back again. It's a snap!

I agree w @jgooch99. Stereo keys in a live setting can produce some interesting and often undesirable effects. The goal in a live mix is to make the sound as consistent as possible for every seat in the house. The exception to this would be if recording the live show where every channel gets its own track and can be mixed down to stereo later, the keys can go stereo and keep the pan set to center in the sound system so both channels are sent equally to left and right in the live sound system. This will have the same effect as mono sum output. When mixing the recording you can pan each channel to where it sounds best in the mix. This may be hard left right or center or somewhere in between.

As someone who mixes live sound and plays keys, I strongly agree with this video. I mix live mostly but mix down tracks from live church services and events all the time so I hear a variety of keys players. Understanging how your instrument/rig translates to mono is a must. Certain locations will only take mono inputs plus the spread on certain keyboard patches is weird. When in doubt sum to mono.

Thanks! I'm planning on changing my set-up to include a stereo monitor mix just for me ... but I stand firm to the mono for the house opinion. And you're right that many clubs only take mono. thanks man!

I purchased a Nord Stage 4 Compact recently and your videos are really helpful and entertaining! I used to play live with either a Kronos or Montage and always connected the mono jack output to the FOH mixer. However, Nord forums seems to focus on the fact that Nords are meant to be played in stereo! Consequently, I was planning to try stereo at my next gig! At least, until I saw your video…..only joking!!! My band usually plays small gigs in bars and clubs so not sure what stereo would sound like to an audience of less than 150 people. Someone recently advised me to go stereo using two channels on the mixer panned left and right if a stereo channel was not available. Following your thoughts on the matter, I will try mono and stereo and see which sounds best. I have one QSC 8.5 monitor which if I go stereo will provide me with a mono fold back but that is just another complication. By the way, loved your blues solo recently at an outside gig…..tasteful but bluesy!

Thanks Alan! I actually think both things are correct at the same time. I'm building a new configuration in the next month that will give me stereo monitoring through a pair of K10s, and feed mono to the FOH. I've also heard the same thing about Nord sounds, and I don't doubt there's some truth to it. That being said, what I'm talking about is most applicable on a larger stage with a house sound person. In a smaller bar or in a corner gig my "equidistant" comment wouldn't apply the same. At the end of the day it's all about producing the best sound for the room, so I would encourage you to try all the options and experiment over and over. Personally I find the trial-n-error part of this exciting. And thanks for the nice compliment about the solo. That band is amazing to play with and I wish I could sub with them more often.

As far as the whole stereo vs mono for house, you make a really good point. Stereo effects are greatly exaggerated by listener positioning. Best for recording or a small room with fairly wide dispersion, in my opinion. Where do you stand on use of stereo or other sound fields in production for recording?

Wassup Tom?! Of course everything should be in stereo for recordings. I should be making my tutorial videos in stereo too for that matter. And I wouldn't be opposed to having my piano sounds in stereo in a live situation. But overall ... especially in larger rooms ... I think stereo only sounds good when you're standing in the middle of the room.

Great. Bet you don’t know how to switch Layer II on and off with a foot pedal… 😉

Not sure if that's a challenge or a suggestion for a future video, but either way ... sure I do. That leads me to another question: how do keyboard players play standing up with all of these foot pedal options?
