Nothing will aggravate me more than to discover the issue staring me in the face after searching nooks and crannies for hours. Very nice on the grille cloth! This set reminds me of the old Blaupunkt Granada multiband that we enjoyed in our living room in the 1960s.

Your videos take me back to the 1960s when I was a teenager and getting right into electronics. I loved working on radios and amplifiers and even made a small TV using a CRT from an old CRO and bits scavenged. I to spent a lot of my life in aviation (RAAF) radar and ATC. Great channel and most entertaining and informative.

Great troubleshooting Dave and the new nicotine-free grille cloth looks terrific. I couldn't find the quite complicated out-of-production grille cloth for my Grundig 2030W/3D anywhere so I cut out a piece of it, sent it to Ms Maas and she made a custom copy that was perfect. She's a wonderful resource for restorers around the world.

Even if something doesn't have cloth on the front to amplify the effect, that nicotine can really spoil your day. I got a DCC recorder a while back via eBay and it had so much nicotine that the bottom of the case which is supposed to be aluminum colored, was brown. The seller said it was that way when he got it. Anyway... something went wrong while I tried to restore it, so it will never work again. But even if that hadn't happened, I might have made it into a "for components only" machine anyway. I know my parents both smoked when I was little but I don't remember our house ever smelling as bad as that recorder. And I never want my house to smell like that either, so it's staying in the garage, in an airtight bag, in a box. Anyway, great video! Good to see you back. And I'll spread the word about Corrien's website; that's a great idea, reproducing weaved cloth from old radios.

29:28 When you bend these pins, i was thinking bend the one in the middle the upposite way of the other two to fix it properly. It probably will work now, but now you are relying on the logo letters itself to be large enough and centered enough to hold it in place and not the middle pin. There is a reason it was three pins and not two and i think this is the reason. If the logo letters was smaller with a long name or offcentered downwards you might have gotten a problem with the logo falling out. But yeah, it likely works, this time. Nice radio, nice cloth remake, i was thinking it was some gold in there when i saw the nicotine stained speaker cloth but seems like it was not on the inside. When playing the radio while smoking the nicotine might have been going trough the cloths alot of times i guess, so alot ended up in there. I got a couple of tube radios myself, a Tandberg Sølvsuper (Silversuper) 4, and a Sølvsuper 5 :) They are made here in Norway, i wonder how many they made or if they are rare, have you seen these? Here is the Sølvsuper 4 (1946-50), not mine but looks the same, my first radio, made in polished elm wood :) cdn.simplesite.com/i/70/cb/284008258427603824/i284008264551626266._szw1280h1280_.jpg Here is the Sølvsuper 5 (1951-53), made in flame birch, a beautiful wood with lots of depth, looks like flames when the sun shines on it. 4.bp.blogspot.com/-kVEcJAm0s3A/Wtt0h1jmbpI/AAAAAAAJNII/BICK0Lc1SHUHzwfkunCQ7rCE9J0TZPYcACLcBGAs/s640/1704201868502-001.jpg Here is the Sølvsuper 5 (1951-53) with the deluxe mahogany cabinet made in mahogany. 4.bp.blogspot.com/-E6biuzph8Hg/Wtt2VnliikI/AAAAAAAJNIg/ZwD48XakO30Ew8m2uVsDd05BzExrvYD2QCLcBGAs/s640/2011201226876-001.jpg And here is the Sølvsuper 5 (1951-53) with the same special deluxe mahogany cabinet looking the same at first glance, but it has the even more rare intarsia stripe on it, horizontal inlay stripe in the middle. Made for the rich few that wanted some more details, and that is the version i got. I was told at the flee market 40 years ago by the seller that it did not work, needed some tubes, but he also said it had a very rare cabinet. I was thinking he said it to sell me things and just said yeah and bought it for my candy money, but i found out later he told the truth too :) 4.bp.blogspot.com/-H5ND2wLmkf8/Wtt2eXyONwI/AAAAAAAJNIw/qIOS3VYh9C8cKMcrkBqbtl-ls5ifwSv8wCLcBGAs/s640/0307201334427-001.jpg I dont know if there is any other differences in the electronics circuits with added features, may not be, but it might have more accurate electronics components, especially picked to get the best values in the batches, and also the wood might be better quality especially picked for the best wood pattern. I has yet to fix this radio and likely now i might fix the Sølvsuper 4 with a recap too even if it did work 35 years ago when i did run it last time and moved from my parents home.. i will probably not turn it on to check lol, but i has seen many videos of fixing these tube amps so i might do a recap some day and start it slowly with a light bulb in series too, but for now it is standing at the top of the shelf for a while more :)

Hi Dave, The replacement speaker cloth has definitely enhanced your radio. I too have found nicotine almost impossible to wash out of speaker cloths, and grills. I’m not convinced it can be totally removed from old cabinets. Like you indicated, it is lousy stuff. Occasionally I too go back to radios I’ve repaired and restored. It never ceases to amaze me how much additional work I put into a radio the second time ...and I thought I’d made a fairly good job on the first occasion 🤣 Your radio is definitely looking, and sounding great my friend: most certainly a huge credit to your skills, and abilities.💪👍 Hopefully next week I will be uploading a stand alone video featuring the repair of a 1954 Radialva radio. Hope you will join me for that one. Best regards, Phil P.s, both my pal Brendan, over the pond in Detroit, and myself have treated ourselves to a FeelTech FY6600 Arbitrary Function Generator like the one you were using in this video. How are you getting along with it?
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
Hi Phil, the cloth was great, I should have kept the old cloth and experimented with cleaning it 🤦‍♂️ I'm the opposite Phil, I wonder why I put so much work into it the first time 🙄 The Normande is a very nice radio and as you say it works very well as did most European radios. Your Radialva looks interesting, I just Googled it, not brand I've heard of so looking forward to it. I don't get much use from the Feeltech, it is probably more suited to modern electronics than what I work on. I hoped it had modulation for AM and FM but it looks like it needs to be supplied externally unless I'm not doing it correctly. Cheers Phil, I look forward to you video 👍🙂

Great video. Found your channel a week or two ago after your Christmas radio build popped up as a suggestion and I've binged watched most of your previous videos. I've always found tube radios interesting even though they were before my time. I may be a bit crazy but even though I don't know hardly anything about this type of electronics I recently picked up a 1941 Sears Silvertone Model 7037 that is in overall fantastic condition except for the dial glass that UPS managed to destroy in shipping. I was all too familiar with that sound in your Stromberg-Carlson video when you unpacked it. Thankfully I was able to get a replacement from Radio Daze. The chassis is all untouched original and I'm looking forward to getting some power to it this weekend then starting its restoration soon after.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
Thanks LtKernelPanic. That Silvertone is a handsome looking radio, and with station presets too. It has a transformer so that's a plus, well done getting a replacement glass too. Above all thanks for watching my channel, don't go too far back in my videos, the first ones were shockers at least from a production standpoint 😄 Good luck with your radio 👍
@LtKernelPanic
@LtKernelPanic 3 года назад
I pulled the speaker out of the cabinet last night to check its condition before attempting to power it up today and now I'm even more irritated that UPS destroyed the original dial glass. Unless the speaker was replaced at some point if you didn't tell me it was built in 1941 I'd have thought it was brand new.That said after slowly bringing it up on my variac while watching its current draw it came to life and even pulled in two stations. Now to figure out what needs replacing and get parts ordered.

The grille cloth looks perfect. Corrien was good find, indeed. Re smokers and radios: I have a vintage Robyn CB transceiver that needs restoration. However, it has taken me ages to remove the thick varnish-like coat of nicotine from the top side of the chassis and everything mounted on that, using metho and Q tips. A former owner must have chain-smoked cigars next to it for years. I can just imagine how the surface of his lungs must have looked.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 года назад
Metho and Q tips will do it James but tedious work. It's a good thing smoking is not what it used to be. BTY, interesting mix of local naming there James, metho (Aust) and Q tips (US) 🙂

The circuits you were referring to is a "ratio detector" and had noise and AM rejection that the older Foster-Seeley discriminator didn't have. The ratio detector could be unbalanced with one diode connected to ground (earth) and often had a capacitor across the output, and one diode reversed when unbalanced as in the Nordmende circuit.
