Norfolk Southern 25th Anniversary of Steam Event. Saturday November 2, 1991 in Chattanooga TN. This was a great weekend for the Norfolk Southern Railfans. TVRM 4501, 630 (Static Display) and 610 along with Norfolk and Western 611 and 1218 were all in attendance. The weekend ended with a triple header blasting out of Chattanooga consisting 4501,611, and 1218. At Ooltewah TN, 4501 and her consist were removed to proceed to Cleveland TN and then return to Chattanooga. 611 and 1218 then proceeded to Atlanta GA.

NS couldn't have picked a better way to celebrate such a milestone. But I'll bet it was 611 and 1218 who were doing most of the work, 4501 was just chugging along and getting pushed.

They could've had 630, 722, and S&A 750 running and participating in the celebrations with 4501 instead, so as to have the original quartet of Southern steam stars, but given the circumstances and all, yea, there was no better way to celebrate that milestone.

As I remember it 1218 was mostly along for the ride that weekend. Chased it and 611 back to Atlanta and 1218 was just rolling and blowing the whistle.

If I'm wrong on this do correct me but when your father filmed this, how did he get the audio from the radio chatter in the video? I've seen it in other videos and I've always wondered how people got the radio chatter in their videos. Was it just a radio scanner?

What I don't get is why NS chose to terminate the program while 1218 was in peoces!!! They shouldn't have terminated it at all but waiting until 1218s overhaul was completed and giving her a chance to run one more year before termination would have been better

They should've had the true Queen as the lead engine. It would've looked better as it went past.

They probably had 4501 in the lead because she had the least power and was the one that would leave a little later on to head up her consist. Easier to switch her out if she was at the front instead of the middle. She also probably had less overall power than either 611 or 1218.

Nicholas Medovich Best I can recall it was just a typical mixed freight with the NS exhibit car hitching a ride. Not sure if it went to Atlanta or Knoxville.

@@TNSTEAMMEMORIES Of all the excursions NS could've had the exhibit car on, they opted to not have it on the 25th anniversary tripleheader consist.
