This short clip from History Channel's 'Extreme Trains' series shows the Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, PA, where the Pennsylvania Railroad (1846-1968) built many of its steam and electric locomotives until the 1940's. After dieselization the shops continued as a heavy overhaul and repair facility for subsequently the Pennsylvania Railroad and its successors Penn Central (1968-1970), Conrail (1970-1999) and Norfolk Southern (1999-). In the late 90's it assembled a series of new heavy freight duty SD70 locomotives from the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors and a number of freight locomotive derived passenger locomotives.

Altoonan here. The heat + grease from these shops produces a distinctive smell as you walk by. And the freight trains run through downtown all night long. PRR, then Conrail, then NS. The horseshoe curve was on the German's bombing list during WWII. Pretty cool to see Dutch people interested in our city

I don’t know why people think Matt is a bad host. Of course he acts and sounds hyper, he’s been obsessed with trains his whole life and finally gets to see the coolest trains in America. He’s like a kid who gets to tour the best candy shops in the US. Besides, he’s actually a lot calmer in other episodes, it’s just in moments like this where he can go balls to the wall silly. So please, cut this guy some slack and enjoy the show.

This is what I , m telling you don, t mess with no train , they win all the time , and even if they derail , you don , t want to do something evil like that , what about poor engineer he don, t deserve to die. , neither do people living around tracks or people in traffic jam. , sometimes you got to have patience , you , ll miserable driving put on some good music , or pray that is the best answer. , how many times god wants to give up on us , we don, t listen so many fights , so much juding name calling finger pointing. ?
