They weren't in the eddas or sagas. Mimir mostly was the property of vasir given as a gift by Odin to end the war. Not a lot is written about that either.
@@joejones8454 well him and Angrboda have a bunch of monstrous children one of which is Jormungandr. Also there was an…let’s say an incident with a horse which resulted in Loki giving birth to Sleipnir the 8 legged horse.
For instance When he mentioned Tyr having both hands it actually makes sense since Fenrir shouldn't exist yet with him being the child of Loki. Same with the female Gatekeeper of Hel he mentioned in another video since she's also Lokis child so it would make sense for there to be a different entity for that job.
In Danish "Anger" means Remorse, much closer to what he says her name is compared to the English "Anger" which is more about agression than Sadness and sorrow.
Kinda funny how an actual historian isn't getting bent out of shape when he sees something that a "citizen journalist" calls "historically inaccurate".
True. Like when, Jodie Turner-Smith(who is black) played, Anne Boleyn(who was real and white). Question. How would he or anyone else react if, Tom Hanks played, Malcom X? I'm kinda curious.
@@pedromartinez4041 an unscripted unreal mythical deity who already is subject to major subjective interpretations, is not the same a real flesh and blood person like MLK. Do you need it explained to you why its important to get these real world people's identity correct?
Really looking forward to how they use Norse myth to further Kratos and Atreus's story in this game. The 2018 game was such surprise, and Santa Monica wholeheartedly delivered a gem and got me more invested in the series than ever before.
So they actually explained the world serpent in the last game. Mimir states that the battle between him and thor was so large that it is said that it knocked the world serpent back in time.
I'd like him to react to the stories of the Northmen in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Especially since not only are they stories passed on from Druth to Senua, but they are also filtered through Senua's mind and therefore likely somewhat distorted. On top of that, runes, beings, death and destruction with a Norse flavour.
13:05 It's cool that in this game the "smartest man alive" has the furtest thing from a generic british accent you could possibly have, and still sounds wise!
They already did, he was consultant for gow when they decided to shift into norse mythology. He didn't plot scenarist or something just make a general lections and other consultant stuff.
Wouldn't it make sense that the characters are speaking an older version of old Norse since Faye is a pretty old being and has been isolated for a while and so she taught Atreus the version of the language from her time.
Norse, like most languages, didn’t change much throughout time until the expansions and attempts of colonization. Sadly for them, shortly after that the nordic religion would get forgotten and replaced by christianity, which shows that this game would take place before. Maybe kratos pulls a greek pantheon on them and makes the nordic pantheon get forgotten which leaves humans and other races alone?
His beef is less that it's using an older version of old norse, more that they're using the alphabet of that older version but cramming a new one into it. It'd be like writing English in Phoenician letters.
I'm glad he brought up Angrboda's race. It's true that people are selective in what they find inaccurate. Not a single utterance about the inaccurate history and language, but as soon as a POC is introduced, all Helheim breaks loose.
its not that most people are selective, its just that most people see those runes and have no clue, but they see a dark skinned Norska and go ..wait a minute....its a lot easier to notice skin color then to know the difference between old Norse and the even old runes...so its not so much that people are being mad about the race being wrong, but more that thats the only(or on of the only) things they can point out as so
Translation: Yeah, she's not supposed to look like that. But then again nothing in this game looks like its supposed to. Its a game about a Greek guy killing evil versions of the Norse gods, not a historical document. They're taking a ton of creative liberties with every aspect of Norse myth. Get over it. p.s. If you thought the original Greek gods in the previous games were depicted in an accurate manner when it comes to their appearance and behavior, you've got another thing coming.
The same way they will believe that Thor is blonde instead of redhead (or be pissed of because of his glorious belly), people have a beauty standard they want to portray to characters they like.
So from how this guy is talking we could be seeing Kratos as a grandfather potentially... And his descendants going to each pantheon, having a new generation born in it and then destroying most if not all of the rest of it.
It is not just about skin color. When did you you see Norse with these african features ?? Her face and wide nose look noting like European or even north African people
The description of Africans being "blue" reminds me of the film Moonlight. "in the moonlight, Black boys look blue". So idk if there's other aspects to the language that explain why they described African people as blue, but maybe that's part of it.
A similar case can be seen in Hindu mythology. Lord Krishna is often depicted as having a blue coloured skin in modern depictions of his character when in reality, he is supposed to be a very dark being, Krishna itself means black in Sanskrit.
Maybe the second hand could be an illusion of sorts when it comes to tyr because in the illustration depicted his left hand was bit off and if you look his left hand is pale and bound in cloth so maybe he used some kind of magic binding to reattach his hand idk just a thought
My theory on what will happen in Ragnarok is that angraboda will likely try to get into a romantic relationship with Atreus(Loki) but kratos will disagree with the relationship wishes and think of it as a figure in their way of their actual true goals to stop fimbulwinter and Atreus(Loki) will disagree and try to reason with kratos to trust her because she's a giant like his wife and kratos and Atreus will get into a likely dispute and split up giving us as the player to be able to play as Atreus where angraboda will likely say "What about your father" and Atreus will say something like "What about him " or Forget him leading to them likely running into heimdell. Atreus along with angroboda fight or lose and Atreus will get captured and leave angraboda so she may tell kratos that his son was taken possibly leading to him going to rescue his son and carrying on the cycle of vengeance,What do you think?
People get angry about inaccuracies in mythologies? If only there was a clue like myth or mythology to tell them it’s all inaccurate. Not to mention that GoW has always told its own stories with no regards to the original myth. That’s there thing.
@@0Leonx0 Cultural appropriaton is one of the biggest oxymorons of all time. Let's all stop celebrating Christmas because it's a messy mix of old Celtic, Norse and Hebrew traditions. Oh and also, don't ever bother to learn a language from a different racial origin that yours like say Japanese or Africaäns or Arabic. Oh and please don't dance Tango, play Blues or practice Yoga unless you have the right origin 🙄.
Also they could still use the original source material to show that the Gods were great at propaganda. Kratos and Atreus Kill Baldr they then tell the other Gods that Loki tricked Baldr or that Angrboda has skin as pale as death can be there way of making her sound hideous and possibly cursed so that no one would be too afraid to ever approach her.
Well for one, ppl are already filled up with Thor stuff from Marvel movies and such so their image of how Thor should look like comes from that. For Angrboda, her geographical origin is well off. She is of African descent in Norse mythology.
Ironically there’s no literal description on any of the Norse gods and characters, except for Thor having red hair, so they took some liberties and did whatever they wanted.
''She is very minor character and has a very non description... What are we gonna do? Make her black, quick!!!'' Yeah, no. That's just sad and funny at the same time.
There we have it, an expert who knows more than any whiny Gamer about Norse Mythology, says that there's nothing wrong with Agrboda being black. Now will people stop getting irrationally mad about it and just play the game?
@@KontroldKaos watching Gamers who learned all their mythology from video games and marvel movies, getting proven wrong by someone with a literal PHD in Norse Mythology is hilarious. They're scrambling
When he said everyone has a set day they will die and that fate is fixed. Kratos fate isn't fixed, as he killed the sisters of fate in Greece. And we know that this changes the Norse fate as Atrayus was supposed to be called Loki but Kratos suggested a different name.
The name thing probably isn't the most important argument because Kratos can call people whatever the hell he wants. The more important change he has made so far is that he's killed one of Thor's sons, who are both actually meant to survive Ragnarök.
Magni and Modi are dead, which isn't supposed to happen, also Baldur die because of Kratos, which also wasn't supposed to happen We don't really know about anyone's fate
3:19 Tyr has two hands, true, but a leather belt and bandages around the wrist or fore of his right arm. Perhaps he re-attached it after he lost it to Fenrir?
Faye was a giant, Angrboda is a giant, they weren't bigger than kratos's house. Being a giant is kind of a race in the mythology, not an exact description of the people
They have kind of a different perspective on reality...for them , their illusion and magic like powers sre supposed to be fluid in proportions..yk so they can change their size easily
Giant is actually a greek thing. From the Gigantes. that being said Jotunn are interesting because technically Fenrir, Loki, Jormungandr and Hel are all Jotunn with very different appearances yes? strictly speaking, Jotunn have no set biological restraints. much like monsters in many other pantheons, they just kinda get born with a shape that could be basically anything. therefore a lot of them could well have been very large. some small and so on. Hell look at Ymir, Jotunn were born from his armpits.
I’m so glad they do this! Just so we have continuity of the real sources so we don’t get mixed up with what the game portrays. That way it’s still fun to enjoy the game if your really into the old Norse ways.
@@lefishe6611 Regardless though, it's logical that the people of that time period would have imagined Angrboda as looking similar to them. The reasoning that "the Norse didn't describe her" doesn't really fit within the narrative or world of Norse mythology, nor does it actually fit the time period. She's usually thought to be tall and have reddish hair similarly to how Thrud is depicted in this game.
@@SpScarletSpider You do realize that they aren't a monolith and would not agree to all depictions of her as there are inconsistencies within the Edna's regarding Thor's hammer? Also Dark-skinned people existed within the Eddas and would not be stranger than someone who has black hair. It IS within the license of their mythology to make her this way because people weren't this isolated from other cultures, the Norse were no stone age people, they were highly advanced and would know about dark-skinned people.
Yup, in Norse mythology a lot of the God's names were ambiguous in indicating gender. So Hela was indeed just Hel. Marvel added the probably because they felt it'd be better if the character had a feminine sounding name.
Wait, if Jörmungandr is already in the ocean and we haven’t seen Hel yet, why does Tyr have both hands? At this point surely the gods already captures Fenrir
0:40 So how did the nordic people respond to the 518-522 era? Would this not have appeared to many to BE said Winter? Did it shake their faith in their mythology when they didn't see a giant dog eating the world?
Lots of historians actually think that the myth of Ragnarok sprung from the volcanic winters of that time, as most eddaswe know of came from around the 800 - 900AD time period onwards. People saw their crops die and lived through a winter that seemed to last for years (especially in the northern hemisphere where growing seasons were short) and thought it was the end of the world, especially when starvation set in. The story passed on through the survivors and it turned into this myth. Much like the flooding myth that so many religions seem to have. They're built on past events that stuck in the cultural conscious and in time became part of their myths and religion.
actually, angrboda was pale blue with fiery/bright red hair Jötunn where discribed to have blue skin. also, how many people do still speak old norsk or read runes for that matter, [same goes for old latin] lame excuse, because those are dead languages and scripts on top of that, reason why people appear to be so upset about the blackwashing of angrboda is because its always nordic/european culture when they do it Anne Boleyn, Joan D'Arc, Jarl Haakon, Mac Bethad but we shall never see a pasty white Malcom X or a ivory skinned, golden locked Martin Luther King because thats a no-no
Thank you for this. Angerboda has also been depicted as a pale skinny, old "hag," with long straight black hair. But also as a young pale woman with messy long brown hair.
WHere was she descriped as being pale blue? We don't know anything about how the Jötnar were in terms of appearance, they seemed to take whatever form they like. The Jötunn were also not all pale, Sutyr was descfrbed as Swarty...so what is it? You missed Crawford's whole point: You accept one accuracy, but the other is bad? Language is highly contested in many discourses, hence people joke about British Romans due to HBO and even non-British studious having cast British actors for the Romans...It's no stranger to think that language causes the same issue. We actually have many stories depicting cultures where people would be much darker skinned as mostly white skinned, the Nasuverse, Genshin Impact, all the old movies set in Egypt and Arabia, as well as the Gods of Egypt movie have done that already, just look at them....we already have that.
@@burakcoskun1865 But he didnt really say anything about Angrboda. He talked about her background and then said he personally doesnt care about her skin color. Thats literally it. He never commented if its created accurately to how the writers in history intended it.
@Christian Stewart The people who wrote the stories and created the characters most likely never saw any Africans nor did they care about races. It was ambiguous becase they created them with their own skin color/race and culture in mind.
@@justice4all190 yup yup, red haired and bearded and tbh, more than likely, with a big gut to boot. In the original tales, he’d join a bunch of sailors, joke and get drunk with them, then jump into the sea. Can’t imagine GoW Thor doing that
