Tales from the Norse Legends
by Edward Ferrie (Author), Benjamin Soames (Narrator)
The tales of the Norse gods, of the giants, demons, trolls and dwarves, still have the power to fascinate more than a thousand years after they were first told. Here are the stories of the one-eyed god Odin, the all-seeing, who from his throne in Asgard the home of the gods, has to prepare for Ragnarok, the final conflict between good and evil. There are tales too of Tyr the god of war, of the cunning Loki, of Thor the mighty thunder god and a host of others. These retellings of the old tales are given extra dramatic perspective by the music of Mahler, Greig, Smetana, They come to life as never before.

The higher man It's not gorwing as a religion, it's being accepted for fun, not many actually believe in that. A friend of mine is studying scandinavian cultures, languages and religion, and she has told me a lot about it. It's not really a religion of believers, it's a mockery of religion.

***** No, It is a real religion. It's a branch of Paganism. Many believe it. Most interpret the stories as ways to coop with life. A lot of wisdom comes from these stories and writings. I suggest, even if you aren't someone to commit to our troth, reading the Havamal. Neo-Germanic Paganism/Heathenry/Asatru/Wotanism/etc should not be confused with other things such as Pastafarianism.

ᚹᚺᛁᛏᛖ ᛈᚱᛁᛞᛖ CZ I am actually a socialist not a communist, and an atheist agnostic as well. So I, somehow, agree, as I don't deny nor accept any religion, so I respect them but I don't take them too seriously, so (and please don't misinterpret me, I'm not meant to offend anybody) I would treat all religions as mythology, judaism, christianism, islam, hinduism, paganism (I use this word in its orthodox sense, again no means of offense), satanism, etc, but with respect. So I guess there's gotta be place for all, even between socialists and national socialists. Or what do you say?

Anglo-Saxon myth, actually. Not that different but hey. Gandalf is a very Christ-like figure, but his name is very Norse-as it was the name of a Dwarf. Tolkien originally wanted 'Gandalf' to be the leader of the Dwarves, but the name was eventually changed to Thorin Oakenshield.

All mythology is true. They are interpretations of the cosmic mysteries and teach man how to live in relation to them. Christianity has its own mythology. Though it would shock even the most open christian mind to even consider any part of their story as myth. Hail the Gods!

If you're referring to my comment - I did not mean to imply in ANY WAY that Norse spirituality EVER died out. In fact, I incorporate a version of it in my own spiritual understanding and practice. Nevertheless, I do not believe the Norse Creation Myth is literally TRUE - anymore than the Bible's version of Creation is true - or J.R.R. Tolkien's Ainulindalë is literally true for that matter. Myths encode "truths" - not facts. They are collective dreams - not literal history.

***** Because that tree is only mentioned in the beginning. Adam and Eve get booted out of Eden, then it's never mentioned it. Listening to something like this and hearing Odin hung himself from the World Tree and gave one eye for knowledge is *much* more interesting.
@TheHobbyReaper
@TheHobbyReaper 4 года назад
The Bible uses imagery differently, but there are more references to the Tree of Life, than you might think. In the Hebrew the word for wood is at times interchangeably used for trees and other wooden items, like Noah's ark, the burning bush that Moses encountered, his staff and in the New Testament the cross is obviously out of wood. Then there are lots of links that show an overlap between trees and humans (in Norse mythology humans are made out of trees). "Be fruitful and multiply". Women were "barren". One title for the Messiah "the branch". Christian imagery takes a bit more effort to awaken in one's mind but the journey is worth it. Tolkien said that all myths point to a reality in one way or the other and this reality is the person of Christ. Currently I am working on a Psalm to remember the victory of Jesus over the serpent. These are some of the ideas, I'm using and yes I borrowed a few images, to subvert them. He is the root and offspring of David and went forth against the spirit of Goliath. The world eater that has multiple poisonous heads to deceive the world was defeated by the One with the double edged sword. The promised seed of Eve came to Gologatha (which means place of the skull) and tore death in two, like Samson killed the lion. The seed feel under the Earth and broke forth as a tree with a crown in Heaven and fruits for everyone who has breath on the Earth. The Mountain, which was the enemie's dominion, was conquered by the Tree of Life. Death was put to death and the serpent got it's teeth knocked out. The LORD has spread out His right arm (a title for the Messiah in Isaiah) to judge the Earth and heal its wounds. As Chesterton said: There are no uninteresting topics, just uninterested people. ^^

Aslan Balkar It's not an actual factually accurate story. Many sources point towards Ragnar Lodbrok being a real person, but the show Vikings portrays the Viking age very poorly. Sadly now there are many people running around wishing and thinking they're Vikings, because they think they know so much about the subject. To us Asatruar who have been following our troth since before the show came out, we've started to be labeled with the rest of the crowd, and thus we are thought of as a joke. The show does stray a little from Holywood's version of the Norsemen. But it's still far from what historically happened. If you feel inclined to learn more, I strongly encourage you to delve deeper into the history and lore of Scandinavia. Even if you don't follow the faith, it still offers amazing stories, and tales.

I am not Christian, these are my beliefs, and they are as real to me as your Nailed God is to you. What is this talk of Barbarians? I am Heathen proud and am no "barbarian", I do not go onto your silly Christian youtube posts and insult your religion... You insult and hide behind a computer screen, I am here to enjoy my arts and beliefs and trust me I do not hide behind my axe (I use it for wood, building of homes and am no Barbarian), send your missionaries else where to steal beliefs as you have done since the beginning of this holy war... Your Christian religion has stolen enough of ours. You people upset me, these are not JUST stories to be insulted, and they are not Christian. None of you, including me, have really any idea how these stories came about because they are far before our time. Snorri was 100s maybe even a 1000 years after these stories were created... He twisted and made them the way he saw fit to make them more Christianized.. Now, I will not tolerate anymore of this Christian mindwarp, you are not hear to learn or discuss the Gods, you are here to take all magical and individual thought out of life and make it into one giant mass money making machine. Take your golden crosses and never return. If you want to discuss differences and similarities between religions contact me and I would definitely love to discuss them face to face. Aufweidersehen.

Non Profit milk is the evil tool of the government. Or, it's good and good for you, plus aids with income for farmers and aids in the health of the cows because over full udders are bad for them. Also, cows with calves don't get milked for human consumption until after the calves are weened off. Damn Imperialists.
@nonprofit4095
@nonprofit4095 10 лет назад
mikefulcher03AUG2000 I don't care about any of that. My families genes are not made to drink milk. Never was. Never will be. The empire keeps its people as children so they dont feel they have to take responsability and be a maluable slave. One of many ways to make you continue to feel like a kid is to make you produce the same substances in your body eventhough they are supposed to change when you grow up. Also, i must laugh at your obvious lie "MILK INDUSTRY IS GOOD FOR COWS" lol wtf? When the cow no longer have pain in its udders from overproducing milk they just slaughter it. For one year they suck the udders and they have selectively breed them to have insanely heavy udders with uncofortable production of large ammounts of milk, way too fast .

The Norse always worked in riddles regarding mythology, runes etc - when interpreted, the symbolism in this makes perfect sense from a scientific perspective. There might even be elements symbolized in this that science havent discovered yet... Like the transition from lifeless matter to microbes. Working on a video which interprets the symbolism in this according to our current knowledge in astro and quantum physics.

This is so interesting and it cracks me up when he says the part where fire and ice clashing but no poison made it in so instead of another giant it created a giant cow that eats ice and makes rivers of milk. But only after that is when something strange happened haha

Odin the wandering deity One of Odins names was "far traveled guest"... This is very interesting. Odin also known as Vodan was by Romans identified as Mercury, who was the patron god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence (and thus poetry), messages, communication (including divination), travelers, boundaries, luck, trickery and thieves; he is also the guide of souls to the underworld. In some dialects of South Slavic languages word "od" or "hod" means walk. "odi" or "hodi" means walks and "oditi" or "hoditi" means you walk, walking. The expression "odi on" or "hodi on" means he walks, he who walks. Also in South Slavic languages word "vodi, voda" means leads. "vodi on, voda on" means he leads, "voda nas, vodi nas" means leads us, leader... This corresponds perfectly with the description of Odin as wanderer and leader.... Is this just a coincidence? This opens up a big can of worms....:) You can read more here: oldeuropeanculture.blogspot.ie/2015/02/odin-wandering-deity.html

Yes, it's Johnny. I remember you wrote all those articles on SNN, good work. I do remember us having a chat, may the Gods be with you. I love McNallen's knowledge of Germanic faith & his work at AFA. I also love McKillop's work. I've talked with him recently about my favorite book of his "Oxford dictionary of Celtic Mythology". Nice to hear from supporters Johnny.

Yes well, it certainly is an interesting theory. We'll probably never know for sure what knowledge they really had, but if we compare these old tales with what we now know today, it starts making sense

That's what I was thinking. And the 'two completely different worlds came into being' could be matter and antimatter which did clash. And 'sparks and dust' just like how the real universe was created. I'm an Atheist, but I still think it's fun to put things like this into metaphors. :)

Okay, yes it's a pretty cool story for a religion, and you might draw some parallels to the big bang with the collision between muspelheim and niflheim, and gunnungagap is a great expression of the void of space, but the real difference between this mythology and the abrahamic mythology is that the latter dominates the world today. If the norse mythos was in it's place the world would still be the same at the end of the day.

I think its interesting how they chose two opposites (fire and ice) and said that they were the "beginning" and we say (from the big bang) that matter and anti matter was the "beginning" and when they hit each other (pretty explosions described in video) energy was released then it would change back to matter and anti matter then repeat etc

I can't say I'm too fond of this video. Not only do I prefer the style the Prose Edda written in, but they also seem to draw a lot of unexisting descriptions and imagery out of what is approximately 4% of the Prose Edda.

Well, I used to be a Christian. But I felt like I really didn't belong to that particular religion, after reading the Bible and all. I mean, what's the point when you suddenly feel that your belief in the Christian God isn't sincere? So, this friend of mine told me about Åsatru, and I began investigating into it. It really appealed to me, both the belief itself, and rediscovering my roots :)

The problem with the survival of the fittest is that once you have a group working together they topple everyone else working are all going about independently. Thats sort of the reason the sith kept dying out, because they can barely handle having two sith at a time. The jedi on the other hand lasted a couple thousand years before its order was destroyed, and then restored a scant twenty five years later. In comparison the sith takes several millenia before they have any sort of power.

what we believed back in the old days? let me tell you, there are still people believing in the old gods and godesses. I'm one of them (living in Norway). We got our Åsatru Fellowship recognized as a religion back in 1996. In 2001 I think, we got permission to perform weddings, and now we get our own burial grounds in Oslo. :)

This is a beautiful work of art. The expert narration transports me to the scene of the story with beautiful imagery. As I would like to read these stories by the fireplace on a cold, winter's night, is the narrator reading directly from the Prose Edda? Or did Elfabros write the stories?

We can all be Norse. If you are Irish, English, Welsh or Scottish you can lay claim. If you are North American "Indian".. you might have met Leaf Eriksson ... and became a believer in the myth. If your family has roots in Northern France, you might have relatives that believed. Norsemen were not just Danish, Norwegian, Swedish & Finnish--but some German, Austrian Swiss & Dutch too. We all have connections to Thor & Odin. This is so much better than 2 idiots in a garden with a talking snake.
